  1. The biggest mistake the "Microsoft support" scammers made, was giving me their phone number. Oh, the simple joys of wasting their time and annoying them. If enough people did this, these scams would collapse under the sheer number of failures.

For those who'd like to play along at home, the number is 888-435-3444.

I love to pretend that the computer shut down during instructions, or tell them I need to go put the dog outside, or anything else to stall them and waste their time!

  3. Testing the 2.06 release: thanks to all involved, it's compiled also 64bit, incredible release! :-D

  4. More sites are refusing to let us read them unless we switch off the ad blocker. But switching off Javascript gets us around that!

And don't forget the 8 other "download now" buttons that you find on file sharing websites which will download anything except what you are actually expecting...

It is a struggle of greed between two factions, and I don't believe for a second that (if I start subscribing to read websites), that they will refrain from advertising or intrusive tracking for long. Cable TV is extremely expensive, is 40% ads, and now they track you too.

Twenty years ago it was reasonable. Advertising online consisted of small banners. Since then, advertisers have ratcheted things up with auto-playing video ads, ads that block out content and must be acknowledged, and so on, which lead to the creation of ad blocking software.

They literally were going to mandate that TV recording equipment include a feature that lets the station arbitrarily prohibit you from recording, and prevent your device from doing what it was explicitly built and sold to do. Reports are that this is coming with the new TV standard.

Trouble is, browser makers are making it harder and harder to decide how the software on your computer behaves. This is a huge trend in the industry, some companies want to go so far as deciding what software you are even allowed to install/run. And then we have governments selling the public out and making malware compliance part of specifications, like this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcast_flag

  9. That moment when you see 16GB of memory costing $200, more than half as much as a computer. Crime does pay when you're a mega-corporation colluding to inflate prices! But oh no, soon they'll need to pay a fine that's a tiny fraction of the profiteering.

  10. Why is tax charged on a used item that's being sold as refurbished? Isn't that double-dipping? It reminds me of MS and the way they wanted to force every Xbox user to go online so that they and game publishers could extort money out of people when they resell games.

  12. New dentist tried to scam me by claiming I need EIGHT fillings. Old dentist says none are needed after viewing same x-rays. If new one had said only 2, I would have just believed him...

  15. I am now an official member of the Tinitus club, and It sucks. I have trouble sleeping on that side, because I hear faint "ringing" in the ear. Lower the volume before this happens to you too.

Guess this is a lot more common than I thought. My personal solution is to let some music or something play all night while I sleep to drown it out. It helps that I've always done this anyway. Apparently they have medicine you can take for it, but I'm not real interested in doing that. They've got drugs for everything, lol.

Seems like movies at the theater have gotten mighty loud too. I wonder if they are at unsafe levels? I remember when I was a kid, and the sound systems they had in theaters were crap. lol Maybe I'm just getting old (at the age of 34)

  17. Impressed to see that TDM works well on the open-source radeon driver in Linux. A little bit stuttery and I only tried the training mission, but still.

  18. A Dark Mod deathmatch mission would be interesting. Imagine it, you're dropped into an arena and you can spawn different characters via pressing buttons on the wall. They fight each other (and you) There were missions like this for Thief 1 and 2...

I haven't discovered any ways to constantly whoop the TDM AI in a fight. Actually, I did once, but I reported it to Springheel and he fixed it. :) (good man)

True. The Thief 1 and 2 guards were too easy to fight once you discovered their weakness. (circle strafe them while pelting them with side swings of the sword, and they don't stand a chance)

The one positive to come out of this is that Trump will upset another group (gamers) who will then hopefully vote against him in the next election. So far the current administration has wrecked Internet privacy, as well as net neutrality.

I always find it funny how people blame inanimate objects when something like this happens. The guy was displaying warning signs. As usual, no one took them seriously. So of course, video games are to blame. And of course nothing like this ever happened before Doom, except for Brenda Ann Spencer, Charles Whitman, and countless others.
