A user has a machine that won't boot Windows anymore. I stick in a cheap thumb drive and up comes an accelerated 3d Desktop, with sound, networking, wifi, etc. User is amazed. They can even play their games on Facebook and watch Youtube. Everybody should have these in case of emergencies...

  a knoppix flash drive. It even detects all the hardware on my Ivy Bridge laptop (except for the nvidia card which isn't needed for accelerated desktop)

  Yep. More than once I have FUBARed my Kubuntu installation by fooling around with proprietary video drivers. (Yes. ALWAYS with the video drivers.)
  Having a live CD lying around has thus far been my savior.
