  1. How to hard-lock a Linux box: step 1. Insert a scratched or dirty CD. Step 2, try to advance through songs. We have made 0 progress since the early 90s. Even the mouse pointer stops moving and you can't switch to a console!

I've never seen Windows do that. I wonder exactly why it happens? It seems like a big problem if you can just stick a scratched CD in a machine and crash it.

  2. Rigged my first model the other day...

Yep, I used a model from another game, made a skeleton, and rigged it so that all of the respective pieces can move. It was a learning experience. However, properly texturing a complex object evades me... (for now)

I still do not understand UV mapping though. I can never get a repeating texture to transcend geometry without artifacts.

(great idea!) They can use the camera in the tablet to watch the human as he reads. If the camera does not see a face in front, it locks the book. This way if the user lays the tab on the table to get a drink, he has to unlock the book when he picks it back up. Of course unlocking the book needs to be made into a frustrating exercise.

  4. Windows 10 actually looks pretty good! I wonder how TDM will run on it..

Yes, I personally feel that desktop mode can be adapted to be friendly on a tablet. For starters, have pinch-to-zoom always usable. Have multiple desktops, like Linux, where swiping a couple fingers cycles between them. Have a keyboard pop up if the user taps a text input field in a desktop app.

After spending some time using a Windows 8 tablet, I told a friend that "if I were in charge at MS, I would fire the people who designed this." Turns out, somebody else felt the same way. That's why Balmer, Sinofsky, and the other people who came up with Win8 got fired.

I imagine TDM will run fine. I'm going to install the preview of W10 on a spare machine I have here.

  7. I got a new wireless keyboard/mouse combo for ten bucks! Talk about a great deal! Within 10 minutes of hooking it up, I wondered if it is encrypted. It uses 128-bit AES.

  9. From the Master Foundry's review of "Thief" (http://themasterfoundry.com/thief-revew/): "I’ve played better fan missions than Thief, I’ve played better Thief games than Thief, I’ve even played better Thief-inspired games than Thief. The Dark Mod alone is miles ahead of almost anything you’ll find here, and it’s completely free. So please make sure to give that a try before even considering giving Eidos Montreal your hard-earned money."

It isn't a surprise, really. I mean, We're talking about an older game with a somewhat underground, but dedicated fanbase. Since the industry does not crank out games like Thief every year, but the fans do produce missions constantly, it seems logical that fan creations would surpass the quality of the big guys because the fans have more experience. The fans understand what made the game great.

  10. Even though I NEVER smoke and I have had alcohol perhaps 4 times, they say I have high blood pressure. If I'm gonna be punished even when I stay away from those things, why not just go on a binge? I guess its because Alcohol tastes like **** and smoking ****s up the lungs.

IMO Smoking would be like getting hit in the groin by a baseball. I do not need to go through it to say that it would be unpleasant.

  12. had to reactivate Win 7 due to a hardware change. I have the family pack for 3 PCs. I call them, it asks how many PCs its installed on and I say 3. It says I'm not allowed to do that... Just another reason not to support the developers. At least I got this used, so they got nothing from me.

Well if you buy a single copy, you're not supposed to use it on more than a single PC. However if you buy an FP, why wouldn't they give "different" product keys with the FP which are subject to "different" rules? "I see you're activating an FP key, so you can proceed."

  13. I didn't really care too much for System Shock 2... until I reached the recreation deck. The environment just wasn't that interesting. Then it got all dark and scary, with enemies attacking in interesting ways and now I'm really enjoying it.

I'm at the Rickenbacker now... Also, I did try the SS1 demo a wile ago, but it hasn't aged as well as SS2 has. I'm not talking about graphics, but the engine in general. That would have been extremely impressive when it came out though.

(spoiler) I like how the worms can come out of bodies laying on the floor, or drop out of the ceiling, or sometimes you'll open a cabinet and they'll attack, etc.

  16. Ever have a show that you enjoyed listening to turn into nothing but constant advertising? Yeah, people have to cover their costs but when the first ten minutes is spent trying to sell you stuff, you reconsider listening in the future.

    1. lost_soul

A lot of content producers focus less on the content as they get bigger and more successful. I'm glad TDM is not like this. "Your mission will begin-- after these messages."

I've been considering reinstalling TDS for a wile now... I've still got my original CDs. Have these guys fixed the bug where you get stuck floating? Last time I played TDS, that happened and I was unable to get out of it, so I ragequit.

  18. I know this has been debated before but I still think it would be nice to have full body animations for your character and the possibility of third person camera ingame...

    1. lost_soul

      lost_soul

Also, I imagine it would be *doable* to have the player holding all those objects in third person with appropriate animations. It would just take a LOT of effort to set it up without things looking weird... effort that is better spent on the actual game.

I take it you do not play much classic Doom, eh? Graphics got good enough a long time ago. The next big jump will be when somebody makes indirect lighting run in real-time... but with the focus on mobile devices and stagnation in the PC world, that will take a LONG time.

But how would you solve the problem of the player holding all sorts of differently shaped objects, rotated at any arbitrary angle?

  22. @#&!#@!! Windows! I stupidly messed with my Windows sdk folders manually while trying to compile the game in vs2013. 6 hours later, I've reformatted my boot drive and am going through the long process of rebuilding the bastard. Yes I know I touched something I shouldn't, but I still blame Windows. Not exactly modular is it?

    1. lost_soul

joke) You Linux users can bash Windows all you like, but when was the last time YOU got a free support call from a certified tech familiar with your OS? Those Windows support scammers are so nice...

  23. Pretty sad when a 3.5 GHz CPU loses to a 3.3 GHz CPU in a race... especially when the 3.5 GHZ CPU is a couple years newer! The older chip rendered a scene in 3:05 and the newer one took 3:55!

    1. lost_soul

      lost_soul

Yep, but there are restrictions. The entire scene must fit in VRAM, and if you render hair with the GPU, it is very slow.
