Saw this over on Blue's News. EA's answer to steam?

As predicted by many, here they come (you'd really have to be asleep not to have seen this coming). I have no plans to buy anything from EA anyway, but I'm sure it won't stop with them. This is just the second of many to come, as long as so many keep supporting voluntary loss of consumer interests. If you're an opponent, you know what to do.

As a technology and a distribution medium I do think Steam is a good idea. It is just the compulsory use of it to authenticate during single-player gaming that I have a problem with.

Make it available, make it voluntary, make it required for online play - but don't make me ask permission to play a game on my own computer.

Same with me.

Too late to save us but try to understand

The seas were empty -- there was hunger in the land

We let the madmen write the golden rules

We were just Children of the Moon

We're lost in the middle of a hopeless world

Children, Children of the Moon watch the world go by

Children, Children of the Moon are hiding from the Sun and the Sky

You seem to forget that Steam takes away the right to sell your games second-hand. Yeah, I know you are gratitiously "allowed" by Valve to sell them after paying a fee.

Again, that is a problem with the forced single-player authentication. If Steam was only required for online play, you could still sell the game for personal use, or you could give away your userid/password along with the game for online use (as long as you don't use the same userid for multiple games).

If you buy multiple games this way and just want to sell one, how exactly do you sell it, without giving you userid away? Of course, since Valve gratitiously 'allows' us to do this (naturally with a fee, but nothing is free these days) it's no big deal. Thank you Valve for granting us this right for a minor fee, while the law granted us it all along for free.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
