  1. haha It's strange how up until now I haven't taken that into consideration when trying to think of a story line
  2. After playing Re4 wii edition, I think it should be on that list Even though technically it wasn't created this year.
  3. I too am very impressed! New Horizon, is there anywhere we can get mp3s of your band?
  4. I'm not quite sure if I am interpreting the joke correctly [aren't pocket rockets denoting NOS?] but I think a bike would be a very good choice to consider. You forgot the pro that it is very stylish, but the cons that you forgot are that you need the proper equipment as well, weather conditions will play a factor in where and when you go places and you can only have 1 passenger. But again, if it's for going to and from work, it sounds like a really good choice. ps: Don't street race, that's bad
  5. It's when people put things like large loud mufflers, large spoilers or body kits on their car.
  6. I drive a honda civic What can I say, I'm a huge fan of the 06 [great in Canada's snow]. I'd be weary of a "tuned" car too, but my friend had a Cavalier which had the engine replaces as well as the transition [it was a manual with no rpm gauge lol] and he didn't do anything "crazy" with it like race or burn out and it seemed to work just fine though I suppose considering your going to use it to get to and from work it may be a good choice, but for 5000 dollars you may be able to get a car that doesn't require it to be checked every time you use it. PS: Don't rice it up, that's gross
  7. I don't think you can just lump all kinds of rape or murder into 2 categories. If I was going to be held against my will for an extended period and violently raped, I'd probably rather be murdered than go through life scared and unable to live a day without feeling horrid. @ demagogue: That's an example of different cultural values more-so though. Some cultures think that the sexual exploitation of children is okay, however the Western culture does not view it in such a light hearted manner. Imo, from a western point of view, rape and murder can be equally bad. I guess the key thing that makes me say that is that I'm used to seeing violence on TV, in movies, in games, but rape is not something that is portrayed often in what I see. I suppose I'm less sensitized to rape than death. But this issue is to broad to approach. Different countries will have different policies for their different cultures.
  8. Yes, but the comparison was being made between those games and Manhunt2. Whereas Manhunt2 was designed to entertain and be mainstreem, so could a racist game, in theory, which is what Oddity seemed to be hinting at. The key difference is that you will never walk into futureshop and see "Nigger killing game" on the shelf, but you may see Manhunt2. @ OrbWeaver: It wouldn't have to be violent acts, but it could also be a change in thinking patterns regarding black society. Media in the past has been shown to have a large role on the opinions of average people. This was touched on in the Paris Hilton thread. If such a game was to be made mainstream than a potential issue would be raised. I also worded what I meant wrong at the end there. I meant if the game violated freedom of speech, such as it insighted hatred, fear or violence towards others [like the KKK does] which isn't covered by that right [ in Canada at least ] That doesn't mean people will act on it, but it means they will be influenced by it.
  9. @ oDDity: The key difference between Manhunt2 and "Rape those Nigger Bitches" is that your made up game insights hate into a specific race of people. Manhunt2, even if you are killing janitors or keepers, you aren't born as one of those. My first thought when I read this thread was "Well did the UK ban Hostel and Hostel2? Two movies which are completely based around the idea of torture and murder as Manhunt is?" However I think we shouldn't be considering video games on the same playing field as movies. For instance, it's one thing to watch a airplane take off, it's another the play a simulation where an airplane takes off. In the simulation, your far more likely to become engrossed in it and it will therefor have a larger impact on you than if you just watched it. Does anyone know of any good research which has been done in regards to the affects of video games on people? Because even though I myself am a fan of bloody gross scary video games, I realize that it is possible for them to have a negative affect on people, because not all people have a solid grip on reality [resulting in the capability to block out bad thoughts], and I don't mean the random person with a mental illness. I could give an example of in my own life of how video games have altered my thinking. Before playing Counter-strike I never thought of shooting much at all, then I started playing it, I loved the game it was a lot of fun [back in 1.0] and suddenly guns and stuff were cool. Now I'm not going to go get a gun and shoot people, or get a gun at all, but I'm just trying to show how much more of an impact it can have on someone than we may be giving it credit for. Another example is the Darkmod. A certain series was so much fun, we have put thousands of hours into making a better version. I don't remember anyone doing the same for movies I think that if the government has research to show that 1 in 100 people [or any other reasonable ratio] will be negatively influenced by a game which simulates murder, it should be considered for banning. Just as a game which violates the constitution would, because if it violates the constitution [ie: Nigger killing game] it would obviously have a negative impact on society.
  10. I think it's little things like that which make the Thief series fun Despite everyone not really liking T3, I liked how in the city every once and a while people would be talking about something somewhat important, for instance the guy who is pretending to be you in that house, I think in stone market plaza. The feeling that someone larger is going on around you is what, imo, makes the thief universe feel big. In the previous Thieves there were rarely parts of missions where there is nothing happening, or nothing hinting towards something else happening. For instance, there were usually notes contributing to the plot strewn about, people doing something which in regular life would seem important, or an environmental important scene, such as a drunk guard or two people fighting. I think these little things make thief entertaining @ Sparhawk: I will try that It will probably take forever to compile though
  11. It would have to be planned out firstly on paper and divided up before hand. There would also have to be one person who's entire job was to polish/detail/light. A large amount of rough concept art would be needed in order to preserver vis portals and the team members would have to be able to take criticism very well I think it is entirely possible, but I don't know if it's worth doing
  12. Haha, I thought I'd have a lot of spare time on my hands this summer, but apparently that's not the case . @ Dunedain: I'm glad to hear that people are looking forward to seeing my work The idea you present certainly is interesting, but I wouldn't attempt it unless I had a group of individuals to work with, as previously stated. I think with some easy guidelines, such as all buildings must be brushes this could be quite easily accomplished. Personally I'm starting to find the construction of large architecture rather borisom, but I love doing lighting and detail work, so I'd be willing to go through and add detail, perfect lighting and arrange the pieces into one large map. However I don't know how popular such an effort would be. For instance, there is only so much you can expect from TDM in terms of gameplay. For example, as of now your main goals are loot and a couple items you can obtain. Eventually I think the player would find it boring going around in a giant city looking for the same items over and over. Another problem which arises is the loading time it would take to initialize the game. People on older machines would need to leave their computer running for an extremely long time, [probably 30 mins] to load such a giant map, thus it seems more practical to have a series of levels connected, as in Thief3, but larger sections as not to take away from the atmosphere.
  13. Even if someone did make a really large map that took up all the available space in the editor, it would take a really long time for Doom3 to load it into memory, which would make it a bad idea because it would be so much easier to just use level endings.
  14. I don't think anyone will ever make a map that takes up the entire editor though... It's just to huge.
  15. Lol, bioshock.com is "The Leading Environment Site On The Net" apparently. That link takes you to a commercial website
  16. Is it just me, or is the US going backwards in terms of judicial and political policies? I'm aware it may be because I only get CNN and Global as news networks since I'm in Canada, but it appears that religion and popularity are playing far to large a role in the judicial and political systems than it ever should. Isn't it one of their amendments or something that religion and state should be separated and that everyone is equal? [lol] For example I think one republican is running on the platform of being a Christian. I just find it frustrating, probably because it's so over-exposed by the worlds horrible media.
  17. I also disabled automatic updates, because I've actually had windows become corrupt from the computer shutting off while installing an update two times, resulting in me having to re-install windows. They need less computer savy people working at MS and more regular people working there so that windows is less annoying.
  18. Are you guys serious? Carmack says that you can carve, manipulate and change the colors or the textures on the world and models without affecting performance! That is imo amazing! If you look at the sides of the mountains you can see the potential, the mapper could carve out pieces and cut it so you never see repeating textures! You could also add a ton of detail onto your map without having to increase texture memory sizes or even touching performance! I think it sounds terrific and it looks great Think if you will, if you have a flat surface that is supposed to be the ground and it's covered in a ground texture. It would be a flat surface with pre-determined bump mapping which would repeat. Now imagine if you used Carmack's new engine, and the mapper carved up and scratched areas of that surface and manipulated the lighting on it, it would look far better, and the performance would be the same. I'm excited
  19. I love ID software so much! Their always making something awesome!
  20. What does vsync do exactly? I've never understood it.
  21. Great first post! Interesting insight Melan, I'm glad you said what you did.
  22. I had to google what a nurb is, because I've never heard of that It seems to be a path line which is curved using only 2 point. Correct? If so this would be extremely useful for AI paths because 90 degree turns look funny and adding a bunch of target points can be messy and difficult.
  23. For some reason I liked Diablo 2. I can't really say why, the gameplay was repetative and the story was drivel, but it was fun to me I don't know if I'd still like that kind of style though, running around killing stuff and leveling up.
  24. I've only used DoomEd a couple times, but I was very proficient with the hammer editor and Worldcraft [it was formerly known as this]. The only two key's I've changed from the bindings are I and O which I use to copy and paste textures, everything else is default. I use 4 view, xy, xz, yz, 3d. Everything just takes some getting used to, figuring out how to copy things fast, work the mouse quickly and accurately, the more you use a program, like with anything, the better you become at it. Knowing what you are doing and setting out to accomplish before hand really speeds up the process too. I'd definitely recommend switching to Dark Radiant. The only missing feature, in my opinion is the final working 3d lighting. But I just test my lighting in-game and make adjustments since Doom3 compiles maps so fast. Eventually you can tell what a light will look like without even having to use the real time light viewer. It's also more stable than DoomEd, my DoomEd would always crash, and adding things like models is really easy. If you really want to get a head start on a TDM map I'd definitely switch over to DR it's a great program My favorite shortcut keys, I guess would have to be: space bar = copy I = copy texture + values O = paste texture + values V = vertex manipulation esc = de-select shift + click = select t = texture viewer s = texture manipulate Other than that there isn't much you will need for the architectural aspect of mapping and their all pretty basic DR also has a great tool for aligning texture called the texture tool, it's under view. I use this all the time when aligning texture which other-wise will not align, it's a fantastic tool to have.
  25. This could be the first
