  1. Last night I had the strangest dream. I went to a museum and we played a hyper-realistic version of The Dark Mod. It was just a game though, as later they were showing us around the same place with the lights on. Eating ice cream before bed does strange things to the mind.

  2. I hate "changes" when they're not needed, like a website visual change. But surprisingly enough, www.thedarkmod.com's new visuals are incredibly good! Well done, very well done.

It'd be cool if every time the page was loaded, a different quote (other than the one from PC Gamer) was randomly displayed. Surely there's other quotes about the game that media have printed. :)

  3. More sites are refusing to let us read them unless we switch off the ad blocker. But switching off Javascript gets us around that!

Ads were getting too intrusive and annoying even before adblockers were mainstream. The advertisers brought it upon themselves by making their ads so annoying. Hell the only reason I started using an adblocker is because a Flash add on DeviantArt was destroying my single-core PC at the time.

  4. A Dark Mod deathmatch mission would be interesting. Imagine it, you're dropped into an arena and you can spawn different characters via pressing buttons on the wall. They fight each other (and you) There were missions like this for Thief 1 and 2...

Intriguing, but maybe "deathmatch" in a Thief game is pushing it. What about a multiplayer mode where two people are hunting for loot trying to avoid each other for as long as possible, and if you are able to see your opponent you get bonus points or something.

  5. Nothing will make you appreciate ten-year-old-equipment that still works more than seeing a unit that is less than two months old fail completely. BTW, many modern external hard drives are essentially designed to take the data hostage.

Avoid pre-installed portable HDDs as much as possible. Best option is to buy a standard drive and an external enclosure. Bit more tedious but you avoid problems like this.

  6. Back again... probably only to disappear for at least another fortnight. Must be nominative determinism.

  7. Just noticed that last saturday was my fifth anniversary in the Forum. Wanna have cake :D

  8. I got a hard drive that vibrates so much that you can feel it on the outside of the PC case! Is that a bad sign? It is brand new. But damn, I never saw one induce so much vibration.

Cheaper high-density SSDs can't come soon enough.

  9. When I was a kid, you could leave batteries in something for six months and not find them completely dead. The opsession with making everything digital, including power buttons, has resulted in everything drawing phantom current, even when the thing is supposed to be off. Compare this to a mechanical flashlight, or old-school Gameboy, and you can understand what I mean.

Current IoT gear is crap because the manufacturer's don't care about security and robustness. Recently there was a story of some smart locks getting bricked because the vendor pushed a firmware update for a particular model onto the wrong model of lock. The locks didn't even have the ability to detect that the firmware wasn't going to work, they just accepted whatever firmware came their way. Such a lack of foresight.

  10. I wish we had more of small bite-size FMs. I realized I don't have time to play grand multihour missions anymore... But nice 0.5-1h (1h max!) missions would fit perfectly to my evening schedule.

I imagine a lot of us are older/oldish gamers with more responsibilities than we used to have, meaning less free time. I ranted about this in the quest thread, but still, I'm a big believer in quality rather than quantity. Can be great if we have both (and the time), but I'd rather smaller games that pack in a lot of good shit than have it spread out with a lot of filler. Portal comes to mind.

I think it's more likely that a lot of devices that contain data storage need to shutdown properly to sync written data, which is dangerous if you have a mechanical power button. Old-school Gameboys are primitive compared to say the Switch, and this necessitates extra caution to how people use it, which means soft power switches. You can also incorporate extra features such as a timed turn-off if the device is not being used, which you can't do with a mechnical power button.
