Crash and slowdown issues

I have had few crashes and slowdown issues with TDM 1.07.

Specs

i5 2500k

GTX 580

8GB

W7 64bit

Tears of St. Lucia crashed when I finished the mission. Loading the save and finishing the mission results in crash.

A Score to Settle crashed somewhere midway through the mission. I saved just few seconds before this so the save resulted in same result every time.

And the random slowdowns, the game just starts to lag badly and then really badly. Saving and loading fixes it. Actually they aren't that random, they happen sometimes after a while I started a mission, Alberic's Curse and A Score to Settle had this issue so far. Maybe others.

I'm running 1680x1050 res, full details, 4xAA. In attemp to fix these issues I dropped to 2xAA, changed nvidia setting "Also set "Multi-display/Mixed GPU acceleration" to "Single display performance mode"" and enabled compression in doomconfig in darkmod folder. Compression lowers quality so is it really necessary?

I didn't Disable Nvidia "Threaded Optimizations" because it wouldn't let me do that specifically to doom3. Only global setting and then I would have to change that every time I play TDM and other games. Not a big deal if it guarentees fixes.

After those changes I restarted A Score to Settle and finished without crash but had slowdown.

Are you multi-tasking or do you have lots of system tray items?

Some folks have seen odd behavior with 64bit windows versions. You try the 4gb patch (ntcore) from the FAQ section of the wiki to let Doom 3 address memory spaces above the first 4GB. It's possible that there will be an x86-64 build when v1.08 arrives so the 4GB patch may become obsolete...

Please visit TDM's IndieDB site and help promote the mod:

(Yeah, shameless promotion... but traffic is traffic folks...)

Yeah I have quite a bit of programs running on background. But I'm not even using half of my available memory right now, about 50MB away from it :) I will try the 4GB patch.

I played first mission of NHAT earlier without 4GB patch and had slowdown about midway through. Save and load fixed it.

When is v1.08 being released?

When is v1.08 being released?

Will be at least 2 months, if not longer.

It seems that 4GB patch fixed slowdowns as I have played about 8 missions since then and zero slowdowns. It could have been a mission specific issue. If my beefy comp gets slowdowns then I would imagine everyone with inferior setups would experience it too unless they run low details. Maybe you should have the 4GB flag enabled by default.

As for the crashes. A friend played Tears of St. Lucia on my comp and it crashed at the end so maybe there is something wrong with the FM or newer version of TDM causes problems that weren't there before?

Nope, what that indicates is that like in every other case TDM is maxing out doom3's hard memory limit of 1.2GB. The 4GB patch (which I think everyone should apply to the doom3.exe file regardless of which windows version they are using..) removes said 1.2GB limit.

Regarding the St Lucia crash, try playing after a fresh reboot of windows and let us know what happens. Also can you take a screenshot of the error that Doom3 comes up with. Fyi I have the same spec as you but running a GTX480 instead and I don't have any crashes (I assume you are running the latest driver and you had un-installed and cleaned out (using driver cleaner) the old driver before installing the current..?

I have driver 285.62 and used driver cleaner before installing that one. I doubt Doom3 or TDM requires absolutely latest one. Anyway, I wouldn't say the crashes are a problem considering I have played quite a bit so far. I'm glad slowdows got fixed.

I didn't get a doom3 error msg when St. Lucia crashed. Just windows saying doom3 stopped working...

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
