List of Dark Mod entities/models

the compass is like the lantern a playertool and can be found under playertools

IIRC there is no list, you just have to check it out/search, by the time you'll remember the most important ones

hint: everything that interacts with the world/AI/player such as tools and so is an entity

I've just started looking into mapping and hadn't gotten to DarkRadiant yet. I was just researching where certain information is in the darkmod directory and how data is kept before I looked into mapping. Sounds like playing with Darkradiant is the best way, off to download it now, thanks ;)

yeah, that's the best way IMO

btw.: the A-Z beginner tutorial by Fidcal is a good way to start, you can find it on the wiki

and there is a Newbie DR questions thread under Editors Guild IIRC (don't take the newbie too serious ;) ) where you can ask questions if you run into problems :D

I tried to run DarkRadiant but I get and error saying it can't find MSVCR100.dll .. I\m running windows 7 is that a problem? Wouldn't the install install that dll itself?

As of sometime last year, DarkRadiant needs Visual C++ redistributable 2010 to run. You can get them straight from the microsoft website:

32-bit package

64-bit package

In DarkRadiant there is the 'Entity Class Tree' view, located in the Entity menu at the top. To quickly find something in it, select the base 'darkmod' node, holding your shift key down then press the right arrow to fully expand it. You can now just type in what you're looking for eg 'arrow', it will jump to the first match. To move through to other matches, press the down arrow key.

The same applies for adding a model. I generally expand all of the 'darkmod' tree, then type in 'chair' or whatever and try find the one I want. Less hastle, and it also shows you skins at the same time, which spices things up a bit.

Has anyone had any luck with textures from Polyhaven? Their OpenEXR normal maps seem too washed out and give incorrect shading in the engine.

I tried to upscale the TDM logo video. First try:

briefing_video.mp4 You can test it ingame by making a copy of the core tdm_gui.mtr and place it in your-tdm-root/materials/ , then edit line 249 of that file into the location where you placed the new briefing.mp4 file.
What I did was I extracted all the image files, then used Upscayl to upscale the images using General photo (Real-Esrgan) upscale setting and then turn it back into a video.
I might have to crop it a bit, the logo looks smaller on screen (or maybe it's actually better this way?). My video editor turned it into a 16:9 video, which I think overal looks better than 1:1 video of original.

Trying to be productive on my down-time before Capcom releases Akuma and my son is constantly on my PC playing Street Fighter...

Finally got round to publishing a tutorial on baking normal maps in Blender, since most of the ones we have are inaccessible or years out of date.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.
