Feedback from non-Thief players?

I was just wondering what kind of feedback you guys have had in general from gamers who have never even tried out or heard about a Thief game.

Being a toolset, I couldn't imagine The Dark Mod being worried too much about presenting itself to gamers outside this fuzzy bubble of Thief fandom (until there are plenty of missions at least), but nevertheless, it really interests me.

There are such people??

A lot. And their comments are sometimes not very favourable :) (they can't judge the amount of work poured in, tho)

I got comments like:

* why can't the guards see you?

* they look a bit stiff and the hammer swing is ugh. (the new walk is much better tho)

* why don't guards hear a door closing 5cm in front of them

* why don't they notice open doors even when they bump into it (and nobody else could have opened it??

* blackjacking a guard and he has his eyes open (and the feet twitch) why?

* fire arrow on guard => why goes he down so fast?

* the moveable sounds are completely wrong and unrealistic. Either waaay to loud, or waay to little, or it sounds wrong (plastic, not heavy-metal-candle-holder), plus the "exactly one and the same sound every 0.2 seconds" makes "bouncing" things unrealistic

Basically, a lot of things we already know and a few things that Thief players take for granted but look really strange to non-thief players (the entire hiding thing f.i.).

If I am there to explain a few things, they pick up the spirit of the game I think. However, I don't see any non-thief player being able to complete something like SL without some sort of big training tutorial. They just run to the first guard and get bashed in.

There were other comments on the architecture of SL but these are not really comparable because A: it looks way better than a lot of games, really and B: it is just a specific map

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
