Dead computer = new computer - which one?

Ok,

My main computer fried its motherboard, and am looking to get a new computer.

You can guess my next question....

There is a limitation though to make it more tricky, will only be able to spend about $400 - $500. Like another poster here, with one income, 2 kids, stay at home wife..things are a little tight.

What do I need to look out for ( ie., make sure the new computer has) to run the future darkmod very well, as well as some of the traditional Theif fan missions?

I only have one chance to do this right I guess.

Thanks!!!!!!!

Matt

Heres a question: Have you ever built a computer before? <br /><br /><br />If you're building on a tight budget, the best way to do it is to built one yourself. My favorite sites to get computer parts at good prices are newegg.com and tigerdirect.com<br /><br />

<br /><br />Very well as in just good performance? Or do you want some eyecandy as well?<br /><br />

<br /><br />Hm, I think you can do some tweaks to get Thief running on newer systems. Anyone know this enough to say anything?<br /><br />This article is kinda dated, but it should offer some insight as to which graphics card to get. <a href="http://www.tomshardware.com/news/doom-3-video-card-requirements,142.html" target="_blank">http://www.tomshardware.com/news/doom-3-vi...ements,142.html</a><br /><br />

Here are the doom 3 minimum requirements:

These should get you started. Let us know if you need more assistance.

If I were you I'd look into ACERs. They have a bad reputation among people who are infatuated with macs for some reason but their cheap and efficient! They usually don't have good GPUs though so purchasing and installing one will be necessary which may also require a new power supply.

Ok, Thanks, for the info

I never built a computer, though I beleive I could figure it out with a lot of guidance, my wife says I dont have the time!

Well, it would be one less thing on my list to do.

When I focus on a computer, I 'll check back here to make sure it is compatible with the game. If it cant do darkmod or theif games, then, ..the computer will be just about worthless - at least to me!

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
