Tip for Running D3 in Windows 7

So if you just install D3 under Windows 7 64, it runs but with heavy flickering and sluggish control input (flickering is not fixed by turning vsync on).

I read some forums, and saw various suggestions like run in compatibility mode, update drivers, etc. When I updated to the latest Catalyst, it wouldn't run at all complaining about "can't launch OpenGL."

The suggestion I saw that did work for me was to install it in XP (already done on my old HD), then just run that executable from within Windows 7 (so no install under Win 7, no compatibility mode or anything). This worked. Hopefully this helps anyone else with that problem.

That is so wierd... so basically you can install it somewhere, and then copy the folder over to somewhere else and run it and it still works? Essentially that's what's going on if you install it in XP then run it under Windows 7, since it can't possibly have access to any of the special "install information" it puts in the XP registry etc.

I've had weird issues with Vista/Win7 in which programs installed to Program Files dir or other "protected" locations have weird access policies on them. Some files are unable to be copied to the location, unable to be modified etc.

I was able to get around this by running the installers as Administrator and installing them to the root (C:\ ) instead.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

Haha, weird.

I have mine installed (through XP) on my external harddrive. So this gives me hope I can just run it right off the harddrive like I am now whenever I upgrade to Win7.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
