    Upgrading CPU?

jdude, remember to update that bios, the latest version is dated 2008/12/09 (R01-B0). Also, just to support Serpentine's claim on that wattage, note that Fermi is reported to consume 280W alone, which comes very close to the PCIe specs that allow for 300W max. So, the HD5850 (which is a very efficient card) will consume much less power. 500W PSU sould be fine by all means.

    Upgrading CPU?

Check AnandTech here: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/default.aspx?p=52&p2=56&c=1 Although he has no Q8300 to compare, he has a Q8200 and a Q8400, so you can safely assume that the results of the Q8300 are right between them. Also, while this page is in German, you can find results for E8400 and Q8200 here: http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/hardware/prozessoren/2009/test_prozessoren_2009/2/#abschnitt_das_neue_testsystem But the comparisons you are really looking for are these: http://www.hardware.fr/articles/778-1/comparatif-geant-131-processeurs-intel-amd.html and this: http://www.pcworld.fr/article/comparatif-de-100-processeurs/les-100-processeurs-testes-la-liste/86251/ Good luck! Quick note: You are absolutely sure that your bro's mobo can run these CPUs?

    Upgrading CPU?

Don't know which link you mean. Anyway, since Anand from AnandTech has experienced the same things (like being shut out because he didn't praise PhysX and CUDA to heavens), I trust that Charlie's articles are essentially true. So far, he was right with all of his predictions and rants. Anyway, regarding Catalyst AI, it's three or four clicks to disable AI, and TDM runs perfectly well. Also, I have no idea why ppl are complaining so much about ATI cards/drivers. I for one have little to no issues, and I'll be happy to buy the HD5870/2GB once it reaches a sane price point.

    Upgrading CPU?

Even worse news for you, bro, is found here: http://www.semiaccurate.com/2010/02/20/semiaccurate-gets-some-gtx480-scores/ "The GTX480with 512 shaders running at full speed, 600Mhz or 625MHz depending on whichsource, ran on average 5 percent faster than a Cypress HD5870, plus or minus alittle bit. The sources were not allowed to test the GTX470, which is likely anadmission that it will be slower than the Cypress HD5870." So waiting for Fermi will be quite pointless, or so it seems. EDIT: And this is the main reason why I don't like Nvidia: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1051123/nvidia-cuts-reviewers-gts250
  5. Yes. Also, have you tried to explore the city a little more, especially the upper parts? There is a lot fo find in this FM!
  6. Mr Lemony Fresh, there's a point that seemlingly hasn't been stressed enough in this thread: you are not supposed to fight in hand-to-hand combat. In fact, it's the last resort. Granted, some players will want to rid the whole level of all human life (as it was the case when I played the Thief games), but I think the focus of TDM is that you try not to be seen/attacked by enemy AI. Think of TDM as T3h_Mutha of all First Person Sneakers. While it does thake a while to get used to, it will pay out eventually. Nice art, by the way. You really do know your stuff. Loved the Turtle Lizard Man!

    Upgrading CPU?

Same with AMD and the cripple tripple core Phenoms/Athlons. In part, these are CPUs where one core is really defective, but often there's such a high demand for these in-between CPUs (as in between a quad core and a dual core) that perfectly good four-core chips are sold as triple or even dual core. If your mobo supports ACC, you have a good chance to unlock the switched-off core(s) and make a great bargain. As for the Intel CPU, it also depends on what software tools you use. While you can't raise the voltage if the mobo/bios doesn't support it, you can go a long way with the stock voltage alone. Just find a hardware forum and ask the overclocking gurus there, they sure will be glad to help.

    Upgrading CPU?

Say, has your brother tried to overclock his CPU? In this case, a simple CPU cooler upgrade would help to keep the CPU cool and stable. Intel CPUs usually overclock very well, so 3 GHz could be within reach.

    Upgrading CPU?

STiFU, the graphics card of your choice would be something from ATI's HD5000 series. Depending on your budget, I'd say go for a HD5850 - not too expensive and considerably faster than your old Nvidia part. Serpentine, you beat me to posting the SA article. You know, although ppl tend to dismiss what Charlie is writing because he's such an Nv hater, all his predictions concerning Fermi have come true.
  10. That teaser! Man that was scary! But honestly, it totally looked like a graphically improved version of TDM.
  11. @woah: Why did you think Starship Troopers was bad? Okay, it wasn't the right-wing, reactionist crap the book was (actually the other way around), but a truly great movie non the less. I agree on most of your other choices, though, except Alien. Alien_s_ (the first sequel) is one of my other favourite movies that didn't make it into my list.
  12. One of my most hated movies is Spider-Man 3, just after X-Men 3. Both movies were horrid crap. Movies that I own on DVD (which always is a sign that one loves them): Predator 1 and 2 Pitch Black (Special Edition) The Chronicles of Riddick (as well as the Director's Cut) Fight Club The Matrix (same as with STiFU) Equilibrium Evolution Serenity (and the associated show Firefly) Not really falling into the category of a movie, but great (and in my DVD shelf) as well: BSG and Eureka.
  13. Snakebite, do you have Catalyst AI disabled?
  14. Bikerdude, if I may: In shot00010ni.jpg, the stove casts no light. Apart from that, the shots are beautiful, they really capture the original Thief feeling. Wonderful work! Serpentine, the way I see it, we are not far away from Speed Tree style trees. Is it possible and feasible to divide the branches into finer branches? Or would the performance hit be too big to justify this?
  15. My two cents on this matter: Maybe, if you're really really interested in better results over at moddb, it'd be a good idea to keep in mind that most players these days seem to be mindless FPS kids with the attention span or a fly. A not very bright fly. So I think that with next update, a video with zombies being shot should be posted. Like, the player grabs a bunch a fire arrows, jumps into a horde of zombies and starts shooting like crazy. Give this news update a smashy title, like "OMFG major zombie blast!!!" and see what results (as in comments) this will bring. If this don't get thr Dark Mod the popularity wanted by some folks here, you could try to mimick Modern Warfare: bunnyhop among stirred up guards, smashing/shooting them to pieces and using the occasional 'nade/flashbang on them. Possible title of this video: "ZOMG Ancient Warfare shooting!!!"
  17. "Erhabener Erbauer"? I can't think of many synonyms for "Omnipotent" that don't contain any Umlauts.
  18. The thing is: "Konstrukteur" does not sound very German, being a word with Latin origins. When you try to build an immersive Fantasy world, you generally try to omit such terms. At least we did this in all other games that I've worked on, be it Morrowind or Lord of the Rings Online. We went to great lengths everytime to use old German terms and phrases, like "Büttel" instead of "Polizist". Right now, according to the votes, it looks like the faction will be called "Die Erbauer", and the Lord/Master Builder will be the "Allmächtiger Erbauer". I hope to find a siutable synonym for "Allmächtiger", because of the Umlaut.
  19. Can you please post a screenshot? Although I play-tested the FM extensively, I don't actually get which door you mean.
  20. I can only say that I had two guards, one standing there permanently (I got him to turn around by shooting an arrow into the wall next to him, so I could sneak around him), and one patrolling from the cloister gate to the stairs and back. I think I played on Expert.
  21. Some of you (who don't speak German) wondered what the funny part of this video is. Well, someone made the effort on YouTube to write down what the interpreter had said. I'm re-translating it for your pleasure. In case you wonder: I'm translating *exactly* what the interpreter said. Have fun! ----- "How, how charming. How charming. How nice. I must say, it's really an honor to be here. I'd like to accept the charming. From Dresden. I don't know, if if Michael knew this. You know, he gave us 39. He gave his heart for the people. People danced with him. And, uhm, often they stayed until the next day. He is happy, uhm, that he could give the people so much. And his charity, of which he gave so much. Uhm, he had a big heart, and he gave it to the people. This shows his kindness. His heart was so big. He thought - everything! My mother, my brother. And in many other different countries. My mother would uhm, scream, my brother would uhm, scream, m-my sister. Let's do something for it. Uhm, he would say, let's make a donation, and we should help the children. Children who need love, and in su-such a uhm, in such a young age, very young age. He would... to play, to sit down with them, and he would say, you can get even younger, you can stay younger. Come in here, be a family with me, that's what he would say. I really thank everyone of you, in his name, his smhole, smile, that is here with us. Uhm, I thank you so much. Uhm, I, it's wonderful. Thank you so much!"
  22. Latinum?
  24. Ah, no, I guess hit the language barrier again. I mean that highly fictional characters should worship fictional deities, so that game universe and RL don't get mixed. To show what I mean, an example: The Builders in TDM/Hammerites in Thief worship The Master Builder. In the Thief series, I don't recall the MB ever being called "God" (I admit I only played the German version). Personally, I reserve the term for the Christian God, and it would sort of feel odd to use God as a synonym for MB.
Quelle: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammer ----- Hammer: Herkunft: von althochdt: hamar (Hammer); altnordisch: hamarr (Hammer, Berghammer); indogermanisch: hamara (Stein, Hammer) Quelle: http://de.wiktionary.org/wiki/Hammer The Builders = Die Hammarer?
