  1. An apt comparision. There is a really good interview with a Canadian professor of education ( a former U.S. citizen) who argues that American culture has taken a turn towards fascism in the last few decades. His arguments have four key points: the rise of free market fundamentalism (which of course cares nothing for free markets, only markets where power and privilege have a free hand), the coopting of the media by a handful of gigantic corporations, the attack on public education (a necessity for even a formally democratic society) and the worst of the lot the dismissal of reason based thinking in favor of religious superstition. Heres the link: http://www.againstthegrain.org/audio1.03.06.mp3
  2. What surprises me is that people believe getting 'better' parties into power will change anything, as if they truly are any better. Politicians are all corrupt, they're all criminals, they're all self serving humans (flawed - not gods) who care about today and their paycheck and power only, and don't give a damn about what really should be in the world. That's why they're running for power! Would anyone truly benevolent and humble and wise, run for power? This wonderous green party or whatever other name is filled in, would soon bow to powers that be, influences they should fight, and their selfish needs to stay in power - just like everyone else who had good intentions as they ran. They'd be good at one thing, perhaps environmentalism, and terrible at something else, perhaps foreign policy or protection of the nation. When is the last time you can remember a good leader? No, a truly good one, not someone who "fixed this or that" but screwed up something else badly. They don't exist. The whole system doesn't work well at all. Humans have been trying to figure out how to do it for thousands of years and still don't have it right. Negative? Or realistic?
  3. Couldn't be any worse than democracy. It doesn't really matter what method you use to appoint a leader as long as he's the right guy for the job. Democracy just seems to be very poor way of doing it, considering the trash that ususally floats to the top. When was the last US president who wasn't either a crook, a pervert or just a plain idiot. THe UK isn't any better off ether.
  4. Sorry Pak! I'm not trying to overwhelm with machine type sounds, but these are intended to be used for any type of mechanical sounds such as arming a mine, disarming a mine, mechanical eye zoom in and out, small robots, ambient rumbles in a mechanist area, etc. Not just another load of "this is machine sfx loop #5432". These are more organic than the ones I was posting last year and don't sound like soft synths gone wild. They are definitely meant to be used like sound effects for lockpicks, locking doors, unlocking doors, but some are loops. @Darkness: Thanks for the kind words!
  5. Have your download nitro ready, it's a big one. Right click and save the tutorial PDF. It's essentially the same as Komag's current version, but has T3EnhancED specific details. KomagTutT3EnhancED The self installing editor package. Make sure you are using a resume capable download application. T3EnhancED The changes likely won't be too staggering at this point, but I hope they are enjoyable. Changes: At least what I can remember. Sometimes I forgot to log things over the last year. Next up, I'll create a patch to convert the T3 'game' installation into a T3EnhancEd ready installation. Oh, and for those of you who are thinking it...NO, I'm NOT a TRAITOR. Dark Mod is still my primary focus.
  6. I thought I had listened to .ogg stuff previously, but the last two things posted I couldn't open with winamp.
  7. Well son of a bitch! I really liked it. Not 'Builders', but I liked it. Shit. I looped Tetris music for an hour while mapping last night??
  8. Yes, that's it...and that's all. I will consider compiling further enhancements into the installer if people submit them to me, but as for my own personald TDS development. I'm finished. I've been picking at this on and off for an eternity. The last thing I need to do is whip up a little self extracting patch to bring the TDS game install up to date with T3EnhancED. That way FM authors won't have to worry about packaging all the custom materials in their FM's.
  9. I know. You would be the 'last' person to think that.
  10. Well, dictatorships usually only last as long as the dictator can hold onto power. Some dictatorships achieve very stable, harmonious social order, though usually at the expense of a great deal of individual freedom. Saddam Hussein might still be in power if he hadn't let it all go to his head, with excessive, decadent palaces everywhere while his people starved. But in the absence of a benign, disinterested dictator, democracy is the best option we have. We just have to all remember that it takes constant effort to maintain a democracy, as it runs against the natural instincts of human beings.
  11. Well, it is more innovative than just copying Thief down to the last detail. If you want top be really innovative, scrap arrows altogether.
  12. Well, my favourite thief level was Casing the Joint in T:TMA (well, my equal favourite withthe thieves highway level). I would like it if FM authors put more emphasis on casing out targets. Obviously, in the context of a strory, you can allow for situations where the player has to go in blind, or near blind, and being a master thief, s/he should be able to improvise and adapt. As I have already said, I find the idea of arrows of any sort a ridiculous thing for a thief to use, or even carry. A thief carries as little as possible so they a) have more room on their person for loot and b ) aren't encumbered by various items strapped to his body that might impair his/her flexibility or agility. A bow and quiver full of multifarious arrows is the last thing a real, or even slightly loopy, Thief would carry. But if you are going to insist on having a fire dousing arrow, the fire-retardent gel arrow is the more plausible option on the basis of physics and chemistry, and ties in well with the idea of an inventors guild. There is no need to copy Thief so closely as to have the same type of arrrows thief had. A little less plaigiarism and a bit more innovation would not go astray.
  13. Leaves non-absorbent goo everywhere. Makes a big squelch/popping noise as the sack is pierced followed by a plop as this jelly-like substence falls on the torch. A negative point IMO. Last time I checked water wasn't magic. Even if it was, magic is commonplace in this world. This raises another interesting point. Are we going to be shooting zombies with holy goo, now?
  14. It's you who argues for the sake of arguing, remember? You said so last week. And since this is in the 'off-topic' section, I'd be entitled to my say any which ways. I see a disturbing trend towards trying to gag the opinions of those you don't agree with among some members of this forum. The fact of the matter is that this idea is crap and there's simply no reason to implement it. You're just replacing a puddle of water with a large sack of goo, one wouldn't be supicious at all, the other practically screams 'Thief in the House!' With the blackjack, the water arrow is probably the only thing there's simply no point changing.

Voting is a team effort. Your vote alone won't get anyone into power, but that's the point of democracy. Saying voting is pointless because a single vote doesn't count for much is a bit like saying there's no point contributing to the Dark Mod because your single contribution couldn't finish the mod. It's the lot of small efforts by many people that change your country for the better. I remember in the last election we lost an important seat in the country by about 300 votes. The next day I found out not one of the students in an university hall that supported the candidate had voted. I knew a few of them well, one was my cousin, and they told me they hadn't bothered because they didn't think their vote counted. There were about 500 students in that hall! No single vote there would have made much difference, but all of them could have changed the course of politics in the country. A little less lazyness by a lot of people goes a long way.
  16. What a load of spurious rubbish. That is a terrible analogy. A lake exists with or without your intervention. A better analogy would be a pool - you have no right to complain about your pool having algae if you didn't bother to chlorinate it first. Of course a single vote has an effect. By your logic, all voting is a waste of time, as all votes cast are single votes. Elections often come down to a handful of votes, sometimes the last vote counted will be the one that decides an election. All votes count, that is the whole point of democracy. Even if your candidate is not elected, the candidate who is elected will be very careful to see how close his or her competitors came to winning, and they will pay attention to what is important to the electorate as a whole (barring loonies and extremists). They want to be re-elected, and if even a small percentage of voters vote for a candidate who champions a particular issue for example, that politician will be more mindful of those voters, and will likely try to shift their policies to accomidate voters who might threaten their re-election. Of course, they will not do this publicly or obviously, because then they will be accused of backflipping on issues, or weak leadership. They do it covertly and gradually, so as to maximise their appeal to the widest possible section of the electorate by the time the next election rolls up. But if a lot of people don't vote, they will only concern themselves with the issues that the people that botherd to vote care about. Not all politicians do this of course, but the ones that consistently fail to represent not just those who voted for them, but those who didn't, are much less successful when it comes to being re-elected. Lots of small voices add up to a bloody loud choir. A quiet voice has more chance of being heard than silence. The idea that if you vote for someone and they aren't elected then your vote is wasted is absurd. Totally absurd. You vote is only wasted if you dont vote. If there are a poor selection of candidates to choose from, stand for election yourself! Even in a non-poroportional representative system, your vote still has an effect. A politician that wins by a hairs breath will be very careful to gain as many supporters as they can so they can win the next election safely. To do this they need to shift their policies, change their views, and listen to what the electorate wants. Your unsuccesful votes are not wasted if they make a polotician listen.
  17. First of all, sparhawk, for the last time, CHECK THE STICKY! I don't know how many times I've said it now. It explains all your questions. Argh! Anyway, game is meant for menu sfx (button clicks) etc etc, and yes, also info like objectives/player start blah blah. Why is frob_loot located in world? Again, check the design doc. EVERY frob sound is located there, so it's only logical to put loot there as well. After all, a loot item is an object like everything else, a drawer, an apple, a door, which each has a different frob sound. Also, remember that you all agreed to this layout a long time ago (which was drawn out by me and new horizon when we started the mod). And now that we where doing the big reorg a few weeks ago I even asked all of you to go through the design docs and see if there was anything you wanted to change. If no one says anything, I have to assume you are alright with it. Argh!
  18. Yeah totally - I was looking at this again last night, and all the knee popping is too violent, 3 times - both front leg swings, and the back swing on the right leg, as oDDity pointed out ages ago. Don't know how I overlooked those, they really need softening up.
  19. Thousands of people have been tortured and murdered in the name of religion, especially those who dare to contradict it (like scientists). When was the last time a war was started in the name of science? Neither do I, but apparently many people do - including the current president of the United States apparently. People are right to question whether people with such poor reasoning ability should be in positions of power.
  20. Virtually every so-called christian in the world, and certianly all Western Christians, are blatant hypocrites. They claim to be following the teachings of Jesus Christ and the bible, but what they actually do is pick and choose the easy tasks and ignore the rest. If you truely beleived that christ was the son of god, and followed his teachings, then you would strain every muscle to live your life the same way he did. He would have given his last penny to a beggar, he would rather have gone hungry himself that see someone else go hungry. His whole life was devoted to helping others with no thought for himself. Is that the way western christians behave? Is it fuck. Most of them live in swanky houses with all the modern comforts and a big bank balance, and sit watching the the news on huge widescreen plasma TVs about millions of starving people. The price of that TV alone would have fed one of those starving people for life. Christians don't follow the teachings of Jesus at all, they just do the easy stuff, but anything in the bible that might cause them discomfort or hardship in their lives, they completely ignore. A true Christian wouldn't spare a single thought for themselves, have not a single comfort, own not a trinket or gaudy bauble, or anything they didn't absoltuely need, and would devote their entire existence to helping others. Then there's the church as an institution. The amount of wealth the church has is astounding, but yet again they do little to help all the unfortunate people int he world. If they sold of all their assets they could stop literally millions of people from dying of poverty. Religion is just a joke. They even fool themselves into thinking that they're truely religious. Religous people don't really beleive in god at all. They kind of hope god exists, they're not sure, but they go aloing with it anyway 'just in case'. IF you really, truely beleived in god 100%, then you would devote every single second of your life to his every word, and the words of his son Jesus. You would not pick and choose which words you followed. It's not a fucking buffet.
  21. To me it seems like you didn't even read my last post - to have it your way, the FM authour would have to create an extra objective to fail them if they lost it before completing the mission. Unessecarily complicating things.
  22. Yeah that's what I imagined, pulling back the frog (haha, that is such a cool name, how did that come about? ) to get it the rest of the way out. Alright I'll rely on the speed to cover it up in that case. It's only the last few inches so it shouldn't be noticed I suppose.
  23. So yeah. I met him around new years, and talked a bit with him about the mod. Although he's a bit busy with university stuff, he'd like to help out. I know he can model, skin and animate. I think he works mostly with Maya, but also knows his 3ds. He put up some of his work here. Some of this is a bit older work, as far as I know the last thing he did was creating a virtual studio (for TV). He asked if he could have a smaller prop to model, just to see how things work out. So, what do you all think?
  24. Yeah the programmers are pretty adamant about putting in detailed collision for combat. Just last night on T2X, a hammerite cornered me in the doorway of a biulding, and I thought I got the jump on him as he was creeping toward me, but not quite, and before I knew it he took an overhead swing at me - *CLANG* my god, I was saved by the sign hanging above the doorway. I was running before the sound effect even finished.
  25. Isn't combat one of the last things we need to worry about? We already have a basic attack, and we won't be coding anything more sophisticated than that for some time.
