A few minor issues with the downloader

Okay, so I've played the Doom 3 mod version before, but haven't touched it in a while. Now that it's standalone, I decided to take another crack at it. I got the downloader and proceeded to install it. That leads to the first issue.

I would have thought that the one linked from here would be the most up-to-date copy. Instead, it had to download an updated copy of the installer before continuing; an unnecessary extra step. Nothing major, just a minor annoyance.

  • No spaces in the name?

I tried to install it to E:\Games\The Dark Mod, but when it restarted after updating the downloader, it ended up as E:\Games\The. Once again, not a major problem, I just renamed the directory to DarkMod and all was well. Still, for a program in 2014 not to recognize spaces, that seems a little off to me. Which sort of leads to my discovery of the last issue.

  • Quotation marks (" ") cause the downloader to crash.

My attempt to retain the spaces in the name, led me to type in "E:\Games\The Dark Mod" and try to download/install to there. The downloader crashed every single time. Again, for a program in 2014 to be unable to handle quotation marks is a bit strange.

Obviously none of these are make-or-break issues, and they're not high-priority, I just thought someone should be made aware of them, if they're not already.

Try E:\Games\The_Dark_Mod

Hehe, mOSt games don't run on Linux either. TDM is Linux friendly. Character conventions have to be followed so they work on both platforms, not just Windows.

That does help explain things a little. Thanks for the clarification.

it's documented that spaces are not supported but I'm surprised to see that this isn't mentioned in the download / install instructions. We should update that.

A couple things that would help is to have a default install path (e.g. C:\DarkMod) that could then be modified by the user. Also, it would be nice to have a browse option on the downloader, to be able to select/create the directory from within the downloader itself, instead of using Explorer to browse there, create the location, then type in or copy/paste the path in the downloader manually.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.
