Loot Skins

I caught this in the SVN udates:

Text: updated bonehoard (new section in the caves, map file only, not precompiled)

standard metal skin for loot plate

metal skin for goblet

There already is a non-loot version of the cup and gobet under darkmod/props/kitchen. The skins should be applied to those models rather than the loot version.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding. Is the "standard metal skin" supposed to be loot? I admit I haven't looked at it, I was just going by what the message said.

One of our gameplay concessions for loot was to make anything that is 'loot' be obviously so--it should clearly look gold or silver or covered in gems or something. We don't have a loot sparkle like TDS, so without some kind of obvious sign players will have to pick up just about everything they see to check whether it's loot or not, which would get kind of annoying.

Maybe your skin does look like loot, I just interpreted "standard metal" to mean it was tin or something. :)

It's not really a new skin, it is the one used for the default item plate. I see your point that one has to be able to distinguish between loot and non-valuable items, so a new skin showing an old dirty but still very valuable gold plate would be what I need. Let's see if I find something appropriate.

Has anyone had any luck with textures from Polyhaven? Their OpenEXR normal maps seem too washed out and give incorrect shading in the engine.

I tried to upscale the TDM logo video. First try:

briefing_video.mp4 You can test it ingame by making a copy of the core tdm_gui.mtr and place it in your-tdm-root/materials/ , then edit line 249 of that file into the location where you placed the new briefing.mp4 file.
What I did was I extracted all the image files, then used Upscayl to upscale the images using General photo (Real-Esrgan) upscale setting and then turn it back into a video.
I might have to crop it a bit, the logo looks smaller on screen (or maybe it's actually better this way?). My video editor turned it into a 16:9 video, which I think overal looks better than 1:1 video of original.

Trying to be productive on my down-time before Capcom releases Akuma and my son is constantly on my PC playing Street Fighter...

Finally got round to publishing a tutorial on baking normal maps in Blender, since most of the ones we have are inaccessible or years out of date.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.
