Odd impact sounds

Anyone know why so many of our movables have totally inappropriate impact sounds? For example, broadbrim hats, proguard helmets, and belt pouches all have "tdm_impact_wood" for their bounce sound? Since none of them are actually wood, why is that the case? How long has it been like this? I'm pretty certain helmets used to make metal clangs when you dropped them.

 

Am I wrong in remembering that movables play collision sounds based on their CM material type if no other bounce sound is specified?
