  1. Have you thought about having some tattoos peek out from under the dress? Like maybe towards the back of the shoulder, there might be the last inch or two of a tattoed line protruding from under her dress. Just something to hint that she's tattooed under her clothes.
  2. ok, im doing some text tests, and it is very hard to get proper looking text such as the fonts we decided upon into the hud, due to the resizing of the textures doom3 does.. but this last test seems as close as to good looking text that i can get so far. the main problem is that the text most of the time comes out looking blurred and smudgy... but this one seems to be close to crisp, and the higher the resolution the more crisper it gets.. ( ie.. it looks fantastic at 1024x768.. not so good at 640x480 ) this is just a test of the text, so don't start with "thats the wrong background.. " and so on.. its a placeholder.. actually.. you can critisize it.. as always, all critique's are welcome.. and the screenshot is an actual in-game shot and not made in paint shop pro or photoshop.. basicly, this is more or less how doom shows it.. plus its a tga to jpg, so its not as crisp as it is in game. what i have been trying to find, and with no luck so far.. is the mouse pointer shader or actual tga.. i was thinking we can change it to something else.. maybe a broadhead arrowhead or something.. but thats up for debate if i can ever find it.

Alright alright I realise that - that was actually my last post on the matter, because I know while it's fun it's not worth debating very long.
  4. I think there comes a time when taking philosophical arguments should go to personal messages and emails. The poor werewolf thread has turned into a story about The Trials and Tribulations of Life and the General Philosophical Arguments of Humankind and the Visual Receptors Thereof. Detecting visual patterns is something that is not the same as detecting programming patterns. Visual patterns: you look at spatial relationships, colors, shapes, etc. Programming: you think about math, logic, repetitive code, correlations to code you've already seen, etc. Two different things. Seeing 3 triangles on a page with one slightly skewed from the other two is completely different than noticing a section of code has redundant processes. Visual pattern detection is different and is probably why it is tested independently in IQ tests, away from math/logic/reasoning/story problems. Case closed? From my standpoint, yes. But I'm sure Sparhawk will want to continue to fit the last word in (kidding! kind've... don't jab back, don't take so serious), so if more thoughts are absolutely necessary, please consider PM'ing.
  5. I've heard of this theory. I've seen it used to defend a particular position in the free will debate, that in order to be considered free an agent has to be free of her will. There has to be an "alternative possibility" to what the agent is willing at any given time. Quantum activity's effect on our neurons is thought to be an event that takes the determinism out of our wills, it allows us to zig when everything else in the world is dictating that we zag. It introduces a moment when the agent can do otherwise than what it is willing, which for libertarian incompatibilists (those who argue freedom is incompatible with a determined universe) is a necessary condition to consider a being as being free willed. There are some problems with this. For one, a quantum events causal chain is every bit as deterministic as a non-quantum event, its just not predictable. Secondly, why would you consider a random event as freedom producing? If you are willing to run out of a burning house but at the last second a quantum event zigs your will and you sit down to die, is that freedom producing?
  6. I check it out. But I'm not looking for yet another popular book, even though I still like to read them. Hmm ... The last books that I read about math and physics were pretty exciting. But my wife also thinks that this is boring and dry stuff. I can see her eyes going glazy by just mentioning math on an extreme high level already. I definitely take a look at it. If you are interested in such stuff, then you can take a look at Brian Green (don't know the english title of the latest book). This was really excellent, and it was the first time, that I managed to understand some aspects of relativity, which I always found abstract and didn't understand. Funny thing is, that working on the darkmod helped me as well, because it forced me to brush up my math, and the understanding I gained from this book is a direct consequence of this. Which one was it? LOL. I can imagine that. I was reading a book from Roger Penrose many years ago "The emperors new mind" and there was a lot of math in it that was over my head. Still, even without understanding the math, his arguments didn't convince me. It was about trying to find an explanation of consciousness by using quantum mechanical effects. Ah. From your description I thought so, so this is not exactly what I'm looking for. The problem is that the equations alone will not help me anyway. I guess I can find the equations quite easily also on the internet, so I'm looking for something that can lead me to an understanding of such equations.
  7. Yeah. That's what I heard as well. Fortunately I have collegue who has graduated in particle physics, and even worked in scientific research for some time, before he turned to programming. Now he is working under me and I'm kind of his boss, even though he has the much better education. Crazy world. That's what I want. I have some background in math, but not that much. Of course we learned differentiation, integration, functions and all that stuff, but it was a long time ago, so I have to brush it up. I'm not afraid of that though. Quite on the contrary I want to understand it. Hmm... Of course I want to understand it. I just read a book from Brian Green, which was recommended in the latest issue of Scientific American (the german edition) and it was quite good. Of course it contained no math, but the author was explaining a lot and he piqued my interest (again). Actually I read some books which were higher level, but this was 20 years ago, and I want to get up to date, and maybe a little farther. Farther in relation to what I understood last time, not in relation to current physics.
  8. I don't think so, not unless you are i the Thieves guild. You only need one anyway to last you the whole game, just quicksave before picking, but once you practice picking for a while it becomes so easy you never even need to save.
  9. Wow... I don't think I'm a good animation artist while sketching, but I can try... If I don't post again here, you'll know I probably wasn't very successful Hopefully other concept artists will give it a go, too. Last I remember, I don't think any of us claimed to be big-time animators. Kfmccall might be good at it, but I haven't heard from him in a while.
  10. I've seen it a few times, always in anime or Japanese movies, with sumurai running with sword behind them like that. Their sword is normally curved a bit, to my recollection. I think that movie "The Last Samurai" with Tom Cruise had a scene with samurai running like this. Not sure. But I know I've seen it in at least a couple anime movies. I remember noticing it and, at the time, thinking of how beneficial such a run style with a sword would be (less prone to accidental impaling, faster run speed (maybe), etc.). But I agree with everyone here that it doesn't really look right for Thief, which is more European-influenced. I immediately thought of anime, or Prince of Persia (as I think it's used somewhat there, too), when I saw the first vid.

A while back I started to write a serial involving a thief in a unique setting I had devised, although I didn't really share it with anyone. I got a bit stuck with where I wanted to go with it; although mostly, I was just writing it in hopes of improvement, and wanting to express the setting I had in mind. But I figured you all might enjoy it, perhaps give some criticism too. Here is the link: http://pickpocketeloquence.blogspot.com/ And also, for referance, here is a map. This might not be the last I fiddle with this setting; as Sparhawk knows I've frustratedly tweaked at a MUD codebase in the past with this intention. Although, I have to say that coding without documentation with something obviously above my head is no fun. Although maybe when I hit college hmm...
  12. I don't know, mission loads can sometimes last for a good minute or two. I think I'd get bored of watching those gears pretty quickly.
  13. Ive been play TDS for the past few days and im kind of likeing it a little more then i use to. dunno why. maybe cause ive been out of the thief community for quite a while and now my opinion on it is diffrent. but that doesnt mean i like it lol. but i do like the look of the game tho. if they only spent more time on it and made it in a better engine. parts of the city are vary nice and even tho i dont like that you have to run around a lot and keep crossing the city just to get to a mission, thats just stupid imo. the city looks vary nice tho, vary thiefy. what i want to know is will the dark mod be like this. where you have to run around a city and all that crap that no one wants to do or will it be like thief 1 N 2. where you buy your stuff at the start of the mission and when its over a video plays and you start the next one. theres no runing around to missions. shit do i hate TDS now. ( why do i talk about shit i hate ) ive got some more question if you want to wast your time lol. the Objective and Map screens. when you press your O or M key and you map and objective shows up you know. well in TDS the map is like a universal thing. you can see every map you have colected and its not a full screen. it sort of pops up in front of you and there is no way to switch to objectives from the map window. also you never no where you realy are. In the originals. the map would fill the screen. you would only see the maps for that misson. and where you are would highlight in yellow. so you know where you are. also there would be a option to switch to objectives. will TDM stay with the classic look of the full screen map that pauses the game and you have more control over you map/object's then just back? also the maps in tds look realy gay. they look like they where made in paint lol. also the inventory and weapons and also health. i got a question that is vary important to the look of the game. the health bar. what are u planing for that. will the health be much like the original or just that same as. or are you going to try something new. also the inventory and weapons. are you planing anything dumb like TDS where the gears move and it has a gay little blue light behind it and when you put your weapons away the blue light stays. or are you going to make it look classic. almost the same if not exactly the same as the first two. with spining weapons and you inventory that only shows one item and it moves in the bottem right and your weapons in the left. Are we to expect the exact same look and setup and also feel as thief I and II in this area? another stupid lighting question. In the originals your sword would get a light glem when light is shinning off it. will this be the same in TDM. it is a vary realistic part of the first two cause a sword is reflective. when light hits it a gaurd will see it easyer then would or cloth. Inventory Items............ ooowwowwww i know that the only part of thief 2 i didnt like was your items. i perfer not to get to advanced in my thiefing. the scouting orbs and invisible potions and slow falling potions (LOL) are a bit much and out of this world. thief 1 had a way better inventory even tho it was smaller it lack the stupid stuff that made the game less thiefy. if you know what i mean. are you planing on includeing all of the avalible ithems in both thief 1 and 2, maybe a few from 3. i know i liked the oil u throw on the ground. lol. funnny shit. lock picking, Keys and other stuff. one thing about tds i do like is the lock picking. the minimalest age made it vary tricky to get doors open in time. a realy cool thing. but i am a big fan of the classic setup so go ither way with it i realy dont care. but keys on the other hand. i didnt like the fact that in tds you never have keys in your inventory. the cool thing about this is how indepth it is. you have to take your time and do everything. even look through keys to find the right one. what are the plans for these things. will keys be in our inventories or will it be like tds. Mechanists. i hate them. lol. to advanced for thief. hammers are perfect, keepers as well. i realy liked mages to and wished that LG went with mages and hammers in T2 insted of mechs but what can you do. mechs are way out of the thief world i think. mechines dont belong in thief imo. well not walking talking ones anyway lol. i have seen the art work of the inventors which sounds realy cool. maybe a lesser intelegent mechinest. more mid evil, thief era. realy cool concept so thumbs up to who ever thought of the inventors but what are the plans for mechs in tdm. will you include them or are we sticking to the thief 1 line up. Realese Date....Single player chapain lol. how many times will u have to read about a release date. but you know i cant wait to start useing the editor and such. from a scale of 1% to 100% how fare are we? and about the SP game. are you working on maping and stuff atm. from your screens id think that there pritty solid maps. not just to show off your ability you know. so are you makeing everything you need to make you game and working on it at the same time so when this is release we are left hanging. i mean ill be fucking pissed if there is no game to play at release. what are your plans for a SP game? is it in dev? are you even going to tell us? a ........................................ .. DEMO and VIDEO's well i also want to know one last thing. are there any plans of recording some in game play and activitys or what ever so we can see how good your game looks in real time. not just screens. and also i think it would be amazing if you put out a demo. a one map thing. there doesnt even have to be objectives. just something people can play and realy find out just how thiefy this game is going to be. and how it will feel. thats vary important imo. Thx for read this, latzz

What about "BladeRunner?" The name is taken from William S. Burroughs "Interzone" story IIRC but the plot is from "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by PKD. It was my favorite movie for years, its lost some of its shine as my tastes have changed but I still pop it in every so often. "Total Recall" was fun, usually I cannot stand Arnie but it had some good points. I wouldnt cross the street to pick up a free copy of it but I might watch it again on the boob tube. The best part was seeing Sharon Stone taking a slug to the neocortex, I could watch that scene over and over. BTW Cohagens assistant, not Arnies main opponent but the grey haired little rat looking dude is the sci fi author Harlan Ellison I believe. I recently watched "Andrei Rublev" for about the hundreth time in the last two years, directed by the Russian master Tarkovsky. What a fucking film, so rich you can come back to it a thousand times and still gain from it. You dont even really start to understand whats going on until you have seen it three times at least, not because its incoherent or cobbled together but because the writing is subtle, you have to study the events on the screen to start to get the idea of whats going on. Directors like Tarkovsky have ruined me for most film, who can watch the crap out of Big Hollywood when works like this set a higher standard?
  15. well, the way I was going to change the nosemaker sound to be more like T2, it would have a "rev-up" and "rev-down" sound, kinda like what's heard in that last audio file I posted. If I do this, it's part of the noisemaker OGG file and that click sound becomes one long 30-second (or whatever) audio track, rather than a 5-second loopable sound. (You can't repeatedly loop the rev-up/rev-down sounds.) So, I guess my question is... can the noisemaker sound be broken up into three separate OGG files to allow FMers to tweak it's duration however they want? OGG #1 = Clicks. OGG #2 = Rev-up (happens at the start of the clicking.) OGG #3 = Rev-down (happens at the end of the clicking duration.) OGGs #2 and #3 would have to have some sort of knowledge of how long the FM author makes OGG #1, so they know when to play.
  16. Let me add that I also have one kid. (Yes, we had that much snow in front of my house last month.) OK. We should probably stop now. Sooo many kids in one forum
  17. Last week I finally purchased a Canon EOS 350D digital camera with 1GB RAM and a 55-200 tele lens. I must say this is quite a cool device. I had an EOS 3000 until about one year ago my son destroyd the shutter lids. Until now I couldn't afford a new camera, and I didn't want a simple one. I definitely wanted a good digital camera, and with the EOS 350D I'm quite happy with. And until now I didn't really realize how much of an improvement it is to get immediate feedback on your shots. With my old camera it tooko my ages to finish off a 36 film and today alone I shot about 80 photos. I never really bothered to do some experiements, though I always wanted to do this, but this is now totally easy. I can instantly see the shot, and see the full images directly on my computer. Today I even tried to make a short animation movie with it, which worked much better then I thought. It was just a simple test to see how it works, but it was great, and the kids also had fun when we did it. Something I never would have tried with my old camera. I will see to convert it to a movie format with some program like After Effects and see how it looks in full animations and maybe some sounds. This is definitely fun to try.
  18. Is the EOS 350D the one with about 16.7 megapixels? I made do with a simple point and shoot for my last holiday (Minolta Z3), but the experience is the same regarding taking loads and loads of shots and then deleting the bad ones.

    Slick!

I know, I know, its the same old story. Great idea and/or special effects but the storyline is ridiculous, events dont necessarily make sense in the context of the movie, its seems like they are just trying to get from point a to point b in a script by whatever means necessary. I watched a movie about jack the ripper last night. It was a love story intertwined with this detective chasing the ripper. The ripper was the crown prince in this tale and at the end, the detective chased the fucking king of england back to his palace, knocks out one guard, then tackles the king in a big empty room and forces him to confess hes the killer. Suddenly, a dozen guards appear after giving the hero enough time to murder, rape, and eat the king. The king dismisses the guards and goes along quietly. I was speechless watching this shit. Who in the world would believe that anyone could pursue the king back to his palace and beat his ass before a million guards showed up? But they wanted some mano e mano drama and set it up that way. Its the same tune in a dozen other films that come to mind. Movies are going the way of the video game.
  20. I still haven't fixed the noisemaker reverb. My apologies. While tweaking the noisemaker sound, though, I created this clockwork winding/unwinding sound that might work for a camera or something. It winds up at the beginning, and winds down at the end; and has some randomness built-in throughout it to make it sound not completely like a simple, cheesy loop. My intent was to have this running in the background of the noisemaker arrow's clicks, but it sounds a little to electronic for that, imo. Which is why I mention it maybe be used for a video camera or something. It's purposely quiet so it is subtle. I was re-thinking the time duration you made the noisemaker last, Ishtvan, and it being like 20 or 30 seconds is actually a good idea. I remember the time seeming too short in T2 sometimes. It's really necessary to distract the attention of guards for a while, because you have to sneak around (move slowly) in Thief. My revised noisemaker looks like it was going to go for about 30-35 seconds. Anyone have any problems with this? Anyways, here's the clockwork sounds... * Clockwork - Winding (OGG version) -377 KB * Clockwork - Winding (MP3 version) -663 KB
  21. Well, if you have in-game effects of injuries, then you also need to balance it with ways to heal, and in that case most decent players will not just reload any time they get injured, but will use the healing methods. I'm not just talking about swinging poitons here either, but bandages, stitching, splints, etc. Ayway, people are as likely to load their last save with the current system when they see they are low in health and have no healing potion. And what do you know about game mechanics yourself? All you want to do it copy the mechanics directly from every other game youv'e ever played, because you're scared to try anything new.
  22. Crap, I've been pulled in. I have only myself to blame! To keep it short: tax law is more complex than just "I give this, I get that" though, there are literally tons of incentives - both government driven and other - for giving away money as a corporation. I won't pretend to know all the ins-and-outs though. Heck, I just found out last week I can write off part of my rent and computer expenses because I frequently work from home. There's a lot of stuff out there. Agreed! Absolutely. I don't think they're all bad. I don't remember the donation figures exactly, but I think one year I read that microsoft corp donated something like 14 billion (!) to certain causes. That out of a value of 108 billion. I could be screwing these figures up... anyway, it was generous. You've just got to expect there is motive in there somewhere though, yes? .Again, agreed. And a lot of that is happening increasingly. There are successes and losses there, though. You've got stuff like openGL which gets squeezed out of the limelight by MS, and Firefox which is taking "some" of the IE market. The problem here is, a corporation is headed by someone making the rules. Masses of non-united geeks have a lot more trouble getting organized. That's part of the reason we need consumer's unions so that big business will stop walking on our faces, shoving products that... okay, that's getting off on another topic, and I don't want to be typing all day. There will be no 6-8 times performance increase. It won't happen. Think about it - a game that currently gives you 30 FPS will be capable of 240 FPS on Vista? I know that's a linear example, but hey - "6-8 times," right? We'd be lucky to see 6-8%. Anyway, a lot of this is just fun banter and only some is true despising of them. I'm not 100% anti-MS. (just 90% ) Okay enough of this garbage... back to Oblivion!
  23. Yes, I've read you statute. Dark Mod "protects applicants and employees 40 years of age or older from discrimination on account of age in hiring, promotion, discharge, compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment", right? Silly me. I should have written that I'm 67. So you all have grandchildren? Can I see the photos in your wallets? Please. BTW, how does it work? What should I do in order to get the toolset? Each team member should vote or state his/her opinion? I'm eagerly waiting for your questions... Nothing will scare me know: I'm moving to another town in July, therefore I had an application meeting last week. I was interviewed by five persons for two hours before I got the job. And it was not because I don't have qualifications or something. It's just that there are dozens of qualified candidates for one position in Poland. We have some serious job problems here.
  24. Not without intervening effects. You don't suddenly become disabled when you lose your last drop of blood, . You feel the gradual effects, and I wouldn't mind if those effects of bloodloss an shock were included in the game, becasue if they were then we still wouldn't need a stupid meter, but no one seems to want in-game effects of ill health.
  25. I've been learning how to build outdoor locations in Radiant for the last few days. Here's my second "room" in Radiant: Almost everything is made from brushes and patches. I was wondering how dangerous (free) rotated brushes and patches are. Should I avoid free rotation tool?
