Night vision

I played the Penumbra series and Amnesia a few months ago, and I really like the night vision used in those games. Basically when you go into a dark place, your eyes slowly adapt to it, and ambiance increases slightly with a bluish tint on your screen. Perhaps it might be a good alternative to kicking up the gamma/brightness in certain darker maps. Not sure what the community thinks of this idea. Any comments?

Here's what it looks like in Amnesia:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loSzpvq73FY - at 0:20, when he kills the light, he immediately becomes bathed in darkness, but over a very short interval of about 2 seconds, his vision adapts to the darkness and there's a blue ambient light covering the environment for a short distance.

JC Denton experimented with eye adaption and color tinting in his HDR implementation, which is exactly what you want and it worked out quite nicely. However, the team ran into problems with HDR because of the closed source and went for a feature reduced HDR-like solution, that apparently is not capable of the requested feature. Maybe, when Doom 3 is open source, we can have another look at this...

Yup, it has to wait until the source is available.

There were too many work arounds required to fix certain issues, and each work around was a performance hit. When D3 is open sourced, those performance hits should be less of a problem. Until then, enjoy the lite implementation.

Judging from the video it seems they are simply attaching a very faint blueish light to the player when his lantern is off.

The dynamic ambient light system could do this changing the current rooms ambient to more bluish colored, but it would change the entire scene and difficult to setup. So, I think it would be easy to add a "if player lantern is off, add a bit of blue" to it, tho.

If the effect is controlled by a CVAR, then every player could change it to his taste.

I tried to upscale the TDM logo video. First try:

briefing_video.mp4 You can test it ingame by making a copy of the core tdm_gui.mtr and place it in your-tdm-root/materials/ , then edit line 249 of that file into the location where you placed the new briefing.mp4 file.
What I did was I extracted all the image files, then used Upscayl to upscale the images using General photo (Real-Esrgan) upscale setting and then turn it back into a video.
I might have to crop it a bit, the logo looks smaller on screen (or maybe it's actually better this way?). My video editor turned it into a 16:9 video, which I think overal looks better than 1:1 video of original.

Finally got round to publishing a tutorial on baking normal maps in Blender, since most of the ones we have are inaccessible or years out of date.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )
