Other Single Player Mods

Hello all!

When I try trawling ModDB for other single player mods to play around with - I find myself faced with a wall of Command & Conquer mods all trying to do similar things - space strategy games which have the Federation fighting the fucking Death Star and other stuff that makes me weep blood.

There used to be a Mod Roundup over on RockPaperShotgun.com and that was pretty great for pointing me at the odd thing either released or in development but the guy who did that has moved on.

What I was playing recently was the rather great Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut.

This is for Half Life 1 - which shows you I'm still looking for mods even if they're of older game engines.

I've played Minerva Metastasis which is a pretty great bare bones mod for Half Life 2, ie. no new assets or enemies but tells a good story using the rhythm and storytelling you'd expect from a retail Valve release:

Just a couple off the top of my head I've enjoyed.

I'm particularly interested in horror and action mods but I thought it'd be nice if people shared some things that might have feel into the cracks. And I might bump it with other things I've found, be they finished or work in progress mods. Apart from Human Revolution, nothing has lit my fire for gaming in a while so I thought I'd ask the Hivemind for inspiration.

Definitely the mods for TESIV: Oblivion. First OOO, this is the mod that makes the game playable (and god damn good too=) ).

And Nehrim, probably the best mod after TDM:

Very cool, does it come in English too?

@Glyph:

I remember playing Afraid of Monsters it was pretty good. The thing I loved about the old HL1 engine was everything was low quality, textures models etc, but the consistency made it easy to get into the game.

I've posted this before, but just encase someone missed it:

STALKER-LURK

Better than Oblivion Lost imo

GTA IV iCEnhancer Mod

@JDude

Yeah! Nehrim is in English for text and subtitles but I can't get it to work. >.>

I've got Oblivion working BUT ONLY under compatibility mode. I have the latest version with all add ons on Steam - patched and then used the unofficial patch to putty up the gaps.

I WANT to love this game so much. I bought it TWICE now and finally have a PC to run it (didn't fancy the Xbox version though I've owned that too!) but when I try googling around all the articles on it are ancient and outdated and I wish someone would just tell me what to do to make it prettier and less annoying! x-D

OK, listen - I have played STALKER. Finished it in the original mode on a crappy laptop with all the prettiness turned off. THEN reinstalled it with Oblivion Lost mod and was a bit bored by repeating but enjoyed the random ness so much I recompleted it.

Tried reinstalling it on a brand new computer with "COMPLETE" mod and honestly was bored 10 minutes in. Would you say this "Lurk" mod is worth reinstalling again? x-D

Well it depends. I liked stalker because the firefights were fun, exploring was fun and the atmosphere was great. LURK builds on all these things adding tons of highly polished weapons, AI that shoots at you from far away, blow outs, better AI, better graphics, more atmosphere, and it adds much more difficulty, and some new items to find. But it's pretty much the same game just with completely new mechanics. You will still need to do the same missions over again etc.

So if you liked the original, I'd say yes, if not, I'd say you probably will find this mod more frustrating because it's much more difficult.

Cool - I absolutely LOVED the blowouts in Oblivion Lost, really terrifying.

Any word on what mods I should use to make the other STALKER games better? I installed Clear Sky and Pripyat - I also got the Complete mod for Pripyat, but I don't know whether to bother with it straight like that. Still seems a bit rickety.

Oh lord yes - I was going to ask if anyone had played any good Amnesia mods - browsing ModDB seemed to bring... Mixed aspirations. =-3

      The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

      Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

      i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
      tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

      Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
