Cpu Heat

Does anybody have an idea what a health CUP heat is? My server goes down pretty often and I have the suspicion that it might be overheating. Currently the temperature is 60C and rising, but I don't see how much it has when shuts down and I'm not sure if I should risk it.

It can depend on the particular processor and the thermal sensor too. You can probably look online for your particular processor what the safe temperature range is. Some of the thermal sensors aren't calibrated right and show temperatures that are higher than reality. That's what Intel says about my particular P4C, although it could be that it runs too hot and they just don't want to admit it. :)

That being said, 60 C is pretty hot.

Well my last post didn't turn out too well 'cause of the sudden posting frenzy but hey... Spar, leaving the case open isn't usually a good thing as it ruins the aerodynamics of the setup and destroys all through flow.... If it does help then maybe it's a case of blocked inlet vents?

I had an AMD home-built machine which idled at 60 C and went up to 68 or more when processing. The die was rated to 85 C, which I would have thought of as fairly typical, so I would be surprised if a mere 60 C would cause a lockup.

It's at 60C when I observed it, but so far I haven't seen it locking down, so I don't know exactly at which heat it will really happen. I found a site where the average heats are mentioned, and mine is listed with about 70C, so it is pretty close.

Keeping the case open, if it isn't already, should help a bit.

That's what I'm doing now and it helps. But I don't want to do this for a long time, because I fear that my kids might get interested in 'how a PC works from the inside'. :)

Here is my temperatures immediately after playing Tomb Raider Legend (with everything maxed @ 1024*768) for 2 hours:

The system I have is an AMD 64 3800+, ASUS A8N SLI-Deluxe w/ 2 GB Kingston RAM, and one nVidia NX6800GT 256 MB RAM. I do not overclock, nor use any extra cooling techniques, although the stock fan was of good quality.

Hope that helps you with your testing :)

Well mine is usually at about 38 and when rendering video or playing games it can go to about 43 or so. Though I have 3 120mm fans installed with another 80mm on the side. Yes it sounds like a lawnmower.

amd athlon xp 2600+ btw

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
