Anyone Know How To Preserve/reapply A Selection?

One tutorial I've never been able to find, and I have to believe there's a way to do it (maybe even a simple way): how does one preserve/apply/load/save a selection? Understand that I don't mean select an area and save it. I mean, how do I store this big-complex-multi-area-done-by-hand-with-polygon-tool-and-don't-ever-want-to-have-to-build-that-selection-again shape so I can simply apply it to a texture again? That's still not the best description. Okay. You have a black and white grid. Because you didn't know how to select, you selected all the white squares by hand. Now you want to preserve that selection shape, so you can come back later, or to a different image, and simply pull up that selection shape again.

How is that done?

Isn't there just a "save selection" option in the 'select' dropdown menu? I know there is in PS7 and I thought 5.5 had it too. Or is that not what you mean?

Finally got round to publishing a tutorial on baking normal maps in Blender, since most of the ones we have are inaccessible or years out of date.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.
