My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

I was trying to make a fireplace but I couldn't find a set of irregular stones and bricks that went together, so I've added a set of textures... stone/floor/masonry_001, stone/floor/masonry_001_brick, and stone/floor/masonry_001_pillar. They all were created using the same method and source images, so their styles should be similar. The first is a bunch of irregular stones, the next is a brick texture, and the last is used for wrapping around blocks, so you can seamlessly texture the sides of arches and such.

PS, perlin noise is great for generating normalmaps for rough stones!

Interesting. Good tip.

 

I assume you mean that you used Perlin noise to generate greyscale heightmaps and then converted those into normal maps?

I'm looking forward to the displace modifier in the upcoming release of Blender. This should make it possible to use a noisy image of your choice to displace a grid mesh, which can then be manipulated in true 3D to create a normal map.

 

It will also allow adding noise to another mesh, such as a cave, which has long been a feature I have found missing from Blender.

I just wanted to show off the latest set of textures I added, by posting a couple of screenshots of the fireplace/oven that I've been working on... (it's made entirely out of patches and brushes)

 

In front, it's a fireplace:

From behind the bar, things can be heated over the fire:

A couple of notes: In a production-quality map, the 4th mortar on the pillars wouldn't have the harsh transition. (for prototyping reasons, the pillars are made in stacks of 4 instead of being fit to the area, so every 4th mortar isn't smooth-shaded) Also, the shadows casted are much lower poly than the fireplace. (the pillar shadows are zig-zags instead of rounded bulges)

      i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
      tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

      I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
      Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.
