Cobwebs

I decided to make a few cobweb decals since people have been requesting them. I've come up with something that I think looks pretty decent, but there's a problem. When applying it to a brush, it is mirrored on the front and back, so when you look at it, it appears to be on the right corner, but when you walk through it and turn around, it *still* looks like it's on the right corner (when it should now be on the left).

Is there any kind of shader keyword that can help in this case? I don't know much about decals. In a pinch I could apply them to models and mirror the uvmap, but that's not as flexible for mappers when it comes to size.

Ah, I found a solution. You just apply the decal to one *face* of the brush. Once I added twosided to the shader it seems to work properly.

Yeah, I considered that for fresh spiderwebs. The one above is actually an additive blend, so it doesn't interact with light, but it has a slight transparency that helps it look believable.

Ok, I've uploaded six spiderweb decals of various types (3 shown below). With flipping, resizing, etc, there should be lots of variety.

Feel free to play around with the shaders if you like, but they'll need to included an add blend because they have black backgrounds.

Hooray! Will check them out. Are they hand drawn or from photos? I did more searching yesterday and found a couple of good candidates; the problem was that both of them had copyright notices right on the image. <_< If they're hand drawn, I think that's out of my ability range. I wonder though -- could a fractals program make decent ones? Hmm...

Dunno why I get so excited about simple cobwebs being in game, but I do.

Has anyone had any luck with textures from Polyhaven? Their OpenEXR normal maps seem too washed out and give incorrect shading in the engine.

I tried to upscale the TDM logo video. First try:

briefing_video.mp4 You can test it ingame by making a copy of the core tdm_gui.mtr and place it in your-tdm-root/materials/ , then edit line 249 of that file into the location where you placed the new briefing.mp4 file.
What I did was I extracted all the image files, then used Upscayl to upscale the images using General photo (Real-Esrgan) upscale setting and then turn it back into a video.
I might have to crop it a bit, the logo looks smaller on screen (or maybe it's actually better this way?). My video editor turned it into a 16:9 video, which I think overal looks better than 1:1 video of original.

Finally got round to publishing a tutorial on baking normal maps in Blender, since most of the ones we have are inaccessible or years out of date.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.
