Maybe I should get around to playing that game sometime...

Nah.

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

Yes.

HL2 is a great game. Not just for the gameplay, which is varied and fun for a shooter, but for the story!

If you've played HL1 and remember what happened play HL2 - it has the best story/plot and the way it's told is fantastic.

Half Life 2 is stellar. Deserves all the credit it has received. At first I got bored of it. However once you get past the first half of the game the second half of the storyline really becomes great. I just hadn't gave the game a chance before. I prefer to play on normal setting also. It just gets really good towards the end for me.

Recently beat Episode 1 which was sublime. Can't wait for Episode 2 Oct 10. Also played this single player mod called Prison Riot. Was quite good.

I did play HL1 - finished it in fact - and the HL2 demo. I just don't really have time to play through an entire shooter, especially since the genre doesn't really interest me that much. I'd be playing for story, which is always tedious since you have to wade through the gameplay.

Why waste countless hours of my life on that when I could be working on something more interesting. Like optimising TDM AI. ;)

That's the best argument ever :)

Though if you ever have time; it's not so much the story that you play for, than how the action plays out. If you are absolutely sick to death of shooters and won't touch another one, you probably can't be persuaded to play through HL2, fact is it is a shooter and there is a lot of shooting involved.

But the creative scenery you're put into, and the scripted events that occour, all come together like you're in an action movie, and there are some really memoriable bits, like that huge coast drive in the buggy, really felt like a "huge coast drive" and a big adventure all in itself, and it's only one part of the game.

I will play shooters occasionally - I had lots of fun with Prey, though haven't yet finished it (still meaning to get on to that). I just can't see myself taking the time to play a long one right through to the finish. I don't think I'll ever replay Half-Life 1, for example; way too many gameplay hours in that one. :) I take it that HL2 is shorter though?

Well the plot was always present, whenever someone met you and talked to you, you had a new task to acheive, and on the way something might happen and things would change, or you'd arrive and meet the people you were told to meet, and something else cool would happen, and scripted buildings would collapse, etc. none of the cheap "plot" tricks from games like Doom 3, eg. "Go meet team X and help them" and JUST before you get there - oh surprise surprise, they all get killed in a cut scene, and you enter the room and are greeted with, not some new characters or anything, just more dead bodies, like every other room.

HL1 had its moments too - like the bit where

you face off against those ninja things and then get all your weapons taken away

. And when you first see the military and

they shoot the scientist who thinks they're coming to save everyone

. And your first headcrab, without a weapon! Heh heh...

Oh, and the blast chamber bit was cool, if slightly tedious

(moving silently is hard when you're not Garrett)

and way too noisy

(stop pecking the bloody walkways, you stupid alien, it's making my ears hurt!).

Not much in the way of plot though. :)

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it. I also never actually bought Half Life 2.... I only pirated it ^^; heh. So it would be nice to replay through that. I just need to find some time.

Has anyone had any luck with textures from Polyhaven? Their OpenEXR normal maps seem too washed out and give incorrect shading in the engine.

I tried to upscale the TDM logo video. First try:

briefing_video.mp4 You can test it ingame by making a copy of the core tdm_gui.mtr and place it in your-tdm-root/materials/ , then edit line 249 of that file into the location where you placed the new briefing.mp4 file.
What I did was I extracted all the image files, then used Upscayl to upscale the images using General photo (Real-Esrgan) upscale setting and then turn it back into a video.
I might have to crop it a bit, the logo looks smaller on screen (or maybe it's actually better this way?). My video editor turned it into a 16:9 video, which I think overal looks better than 1:1 video of original.

Trying to be productive on my down-time before Capcom releases Akuma and my son is constantly on my PC playing Street Fighter...

Finally got round to publishing a tutorial on baking normal maps in Blender, since most of the ones we have are inaccessible or years out of date.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.
