Hot off the press:

The IGF Organizers have announced the 12 receipients of the 2008 Independent Games Festival Student Showcase awards, from a field of over 125 entries, including USC Interactive Media Program's quirky The Misadventures of PB Winterbottom, Sheridan Institute's stylish booger-busting Gesundheit!, and The National Academy of Digital Interactive Entertainmen's dual-perspective Half-Life 2 modification Flipside.

The Independent Games Festival Student Showcase website now features a complete list of all the showcase winners, including screenshots and links to videos and demonstration versions where available. Each winner will receive a $500 travel stipend to help aid their trip to GDC 2008.

In addition to PT Winterbottom, Gesundheit, and Flipside, other student showcase finalists nominated for the $2,500 Best Student Game prize to be given out at GDC include DigiPen Institute of Technology's surreal flocking shooter Empyreal Nocturne, Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia's playfully kinesthetic Crayon Physics, and Australian National University's tactical space attrition game, >>>>Mayhem Intergalactic<<<<.

Mayhem Intergalactic as in this game, which I made all on my lonesome. :)

Now if only I can find the several thousand dollars required to undertake a trip to the US, or alternatively nominate someone to go and present the game in my stead... pity the travel stipend is rather pathetic, or I'd be there like a shot.

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

Thanks guys!

Holy crap. Just had a Master of Orion flashback :)

Heh. That was a good game.

Although it looks similar at first glance, Mayhem Intergalactic is quite a different experience from Master of Orion. It has more of an arcade feel due to the simplified mechanics. I'm not saying that it's better or worse, just that it's different. Though I do enjoy a concentrated 5-minute arcade strategy session. :)

I could put you up if you didn't mind being 45 minutes away. :) Probably the flight cost >> hotel cost though.

Thanks for the offer! The accommodation certainly would be cheaper than the flight, but the more money saved the better. And 45 minutes is fine; I spend longer than that on the bus from uni a few days a week. Just as long as there aren't any excellent opportunities to get mugged on public transport during those 45 minutes - I hear there's this thing in American cities called crime that I'm not very familiar with. :P Canberra, Australia may be quiet, but at least that means it's quiet...

By the way, each finalist gets 5 Expo passes ($200 value each) to give to other people, so if I did go I might be able to hook you up if you wanted to check out the conference. Assuming I don't get fifty people bugging me for invites - in that case I couldn't promise anything!

I'm still looking into accommodation options. I might know someone nearby who I went to school with, if they're still living there. Once I've figured out (1) whether or not I'm going and (2) whether or not I still need accommodation, I'll let you know. :)

Cool, I'm happy to provide my couch if needed. There is a train that goes right into the city from where I live, that takes about 45 minutes, driving is a little longer. I would indeed be interested in going to the conference if you could hook up a pass. If not that's cool too. Just let me know. :)

Just let me know. :)

Yep, definitely.

Aren't there any cheap airlines in Oz yet? There are lots in the UK. You can get a return flight to SF for about £400.

The lowest price I've been able to find is around $2000 AUD (about £871), with Air China. Then there's $2200 AUD (£958) with Air New Zealand, or $2500 (£1088) with Qantas (Australia's national airline, good safety record).

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
