After messing around with darkradiant and getting used to it, I've started to work on something. Really basic, the story line to this map is that you need to prove to some other thieves that you are who you say you are (which is master thief). So you need to rob three places, One is a pawnshop, one was going to be a jewelry store but without the beta material I'm not sure I can do that, I'll see what I can do with that, and the third is a resteruant/inn type building with a cellar.

 

A lot of my mapping is generally expermemental, but I have been getting better at following a theme throughout. So tell me what you guys think for a first go. I'm open to comments and construtive criticism. I'm still trying to get the lighting down too as you can see below the washout with the candles.

looking good so far. You might want to add a slight ambient light to the whole map, brightness of only 5 or 6 if you want it to stay pretty dark, or up to 8 or 10 if it still looks good. You can stretch the light to cover the whole area even if the range goes out of bounds, but the light object itself must be inside the map or else you will get a "leak"

Ooh, thanks for that, I remember glancing over it in the tutorial, I'll have to look more thourgh ly through it when I get some more mapping time.

You should also check the proportions. The ceiling looks very low on the first screen and the texture on the beams should be rotated by 90 degrees. Also try introducing some patches to the walledges. Looks always smoother...

      I posted about it before, but I think the default tdm logo video looks outdated. For a (i.m.o.) better looking version, you can download the pk4 attached to this post and plonk it in your tdm root folder. Every mission that starts with the tdm logo then starts with the better looking one. Try for example mission COS1 Pearls and Swine.

      I finished DOOM - The Dark Ages the other day. It is a decent shooter, but not as great as its predecessors, especially because of the soundtrack.
