Looking for a good host for a portfolio kind of site...

Recommended Posts

Maybe this is a bit lame for a post, but I was looking for a good website host to start putting my work online, and Im still not sure which one would be best.

There are a good number of internet savy people here, so maybe you guys could give me a few suggestions:

- I have some art material I would like to upload. This could be a blog sort of thing, or a site that is easily expanded. This would probably be my "personnal creation" site where I would be putting my stuff as I make them.

- A portfolio site, we all know what thats like.

- A "professional" site where you put material on your completed works, and WIPs. Architecture is the field.

I've been posting most of my art stuff on social media, and using direct emails and a pdf portfolio for professional needs . But I want to expand a bit and have something online to refer to.

No need for a payed subscription, a free, simple hosting will do. But I must stress this - no ads. I know of wordpress, but little else. Any good ideas?

Unless you're going to make a proper portfolio, with a web designer and whatnot, I'd just go with any number of blogging services. You can customize some of them beyond recognition, as well as get custom URLs.

Wordpress is good, and very customisable (although you need to pay if you want to edit the CSS yourself), but as I understand it there are sometimes ads shown on free accounts (which I never see because I use adblock). You could also try Blogger, but I'd be surprised if that is totally ad-free either given that it is Google.

If you are looking for a site which is both 100% free and never shows ads you might be out of luck. The host has to pay its bills somehow.

Yeah, I made a site on wordpress once, for a short film I worked on. It worked quite well, but I remember not being able to find a template (or edit the one I did choose) to make it as bare and minimal as I liked, I had to work with their constraints. Maybe they have new ones by now...

There are many good portfolio templates for Wordpress, some of them even free. I would buy some web space and use wordpress with a nice portfolio theme, if I were in your shoes :)
