GUI editor

Recommended Posts

So I was following a tutorial on GUIs, and I since discovered that my installation (or TDM itself) seems unable to load both the custom GUIs (when you use the console command "testgui xxxxx.gui"), or the GUI editor that is supposed to come included in DOOM. The first simply fails, saying that the game cant load the gui, and the screen turns black (I´ve tried with a few different ones, even stuff from the startmap pack, and the results are the same), and the editor actually loads up, but when you click "new", nothing happens; when you try to load any gui, it says it cant import it or load it, and when you exit the program, TDM crashes, is unable to continue.

Is that only on my end, or has the gui functionality somehow changed during the standalone process? Perhaps some of it hasnt been ported yet?

No, its at the end of tdm.

The gui editor in tdm is broken, at the moment.

And thats a shame.

(@devs: please fix this)

But there are serveral alternatives, like the guieditor in games that are using the d3 engine,

guieditor flesh or the combination of your texteditor and commands "testgui" and "reloadgui".

And Readable Editor in darkradiant,

testgui does work, however. You have to use the full path, like "testgui guis/xxxx.gui".

Thanks guys, I guess I'll have to make due with those alternatives freyk pointed out. And great catch Obs, that just saved me hours of clueless back and forth. ;)

Some pro-tips:

Starting the editor
I use the prey 2006 gui editor.
And start this editor, with application parameters:
"+exec run_guieditor.cfg"
This starts prey and run the following console commands

seta r_fullscreen "0"
seta r_gamma "1"
seta r_mode "8"
vid_restart
seta r_gamma "1"
seta r_mode "8"
vid_restart
editguis

How i create the guis:

  • Open the editor and save a empty gui file.
  • Give "desktop" a border and then use the zoom-buttons to zoom in the gui. For the right fullscreen-display of the gui.
  • Then i create the windows + buttons, positioning them. Close the gui-editor.
  • Open the gui file in your favorite plaintext editor and in tdm (using testgui) in a small window.
  • Make the changes in the texteditor, save it and use command "reloadguis"
  • adding textures using the texteditor and then the script/animations/etc.
  • end

Other tips

  • Save often. Because the gui editor will crash.
  • If the gui editor crashes, After displaying the error, stop the application process.
  • Use the viewer in the gui editor.
  • Check the console for errors.
