  1. The only thing close to martial arts coming from germany is the Yodel.
  2. Ironically, KI is the abbreviation for the german word for AI.
  3. dalAI (sup BlackCat) SamurAI (lol) Shonen-AI (lolol) My favourite: AIIIIIIEEEE!

    Zombies

Yeah I know, and I actually think it's the right thing to do, too. I'll just pretend they're placeholders for now.

    Zombies

It aches my heart, I really wish we could have done something different for them, but I guess there's nothing that can be done about that.
  6. Unfortunately, almost no thief bothers with picking a lock anymore - you're lucky if they use a crowbar, and aren't driving a truck through your doors.
  7. I know pak would welcome help with SFX - do you have some examples?
  8. Thank you, good work! I almost thought the database (=Forums Content) would be lost. Think you could burn it down some time? stop with the pron ftp lolz
  9. I wonder why a bunch of people would stick together and force Thief mechanics on the D3 engine, when clearly Flesh and T3Ed are top-notch, flawless and slick. I further do not see the point why DromEd veterans decide to wait for this abomination, instead of using the top-notch, flawless and slick tools they were given. It is completely beyond me why former employees of Ion Storm would belittle Flesh as patchwork job - I mean, come on, just because they fired the guy who wrote it in the middle of developement! The world is such a strange and irrational place.
  10. This is some graphical stuff I missed in DromEd. I don't know what Radiant already can do, so ignore anything that's already there or doesn't apply. Also, low priority. - Radii for stim/recepts can be displayed in the editor (should be a toggle) - Patrol Paths are displayed when clicking a waypoint - Maximal frob range (including leaning) can be displayed
  11. oDDity, I don't remember if you mentioned it, but did you play (the original) Deus Ex? If so, I'd be interested in your thoughts about it. I agree with you in almost all points. The last FPS I enjoyed was Doom 2, after that the genre got boring for me. I liked crossbreeds like System Shock or Deus Ex though, especially the latter. Deus Ex was the iteration of the FPS genre I had hope to see years earlier, but sadly, evolution pretty much stopped there. If Thief 2 was your first game*, you've missed the golden times of the C64, when a 170kb disc held 10 games with 10 different game ideas. If you don't mind pixels as big as your head, get an emulator and browse through some old games. Hell, everybody should do that, if only to see how boring the game market today really is. Edit: *Sorry, missed the "first PC game" bit. What platforms did you start with?
  12. Bump, new one. Doesn't loop. http://208.49.149.118/TheDarkMod/audio/amb..._foggynight.ogg
  13. What do you guys think about giving the mission designer the opportunity to put some dynamic text on the mission complete screen, kinda like an epilogue option?
  14. Tickets for the finals? Who are you working for, SAP? Anyways, my guess is either Czechoslovakia or Italy if Brasil doesn't make it again (which I somehow doubt). As for the Germans, I think they'll get no further than the quaters.
  15. A hello from me, too! Don't mind us sound guys, we're only here to harass the other departments. Dram, if you haven't checked his application thread I suggest you do so, his jaw-dropping screens made with Dark are a must-see.
  16. Just for pak, the two ambients I posted in the Team forums: http://208.49.149.118/TheDarkMod/audio/amb..._greenhouse.ogg http://208.49.149.118/TheDarkMod/audio/amb...s_cementary.ogg

    Bioshock

Just wanted to say, the TTLG staff has been granted an interview with Irrational and is collecting questions for them in a thread in the BioShock forums.
  18. Welcome! o/ The head is awesome, with much character, good good work! Monster doesn't load for me either :/ Not that it matters that much, but did you play any of the Thief games? Just being curious.
  19. If I have any voice in this, I'd say we give a seperate jingle to each option resolve. It's only natural to provide the player with this kind of information, forcing him/her to check the objectives because the "something happened with your objectives" sound played doesn't make sense. With a distinctive sound for each situation, players don't have to break their immersion more than neccesary. Sax: I like the "failed objective" concept. Not sure about the "objective complete" jingle, it's a little too brassy for my taste. I think I have made a "objective complete" sound sometime around with some terrible xylophone reeking of 8bit distortion. :& I think the different jingles should sound similar but distinctive. Ideally, created with most of the same sample set. I'm probably not the right person for that call though, I have no talent for melodies. Sax?
  20. Wait, we only have one global sound channel? This is bad. We can't make smooth transitions between two areas with global ambients like that! Or am I missing something? That would be SFX, no? I always called sounds not created by the environment as ambient.

    The Dream

I'm dreaming very vividly, or, used to. Work has me so exhausted lately, I only rarely remember any dreams (you know the feeling, being too tired to dream?). I have one very special dream. Or series. It's complicated. At some point in my life, I dreamed of a city - apart from slightly strange architecure and layout, nothing unusual. Still, it stuck in my mind because of several reasons: First, it was lucid. Not only was I aware that I was dreaming, I also could decide on my actions in complete freedom and it lacked that "dreamfeel" when you witness yourself doing something and later, when awake, ask yourself "why would I do something like that anyways?". Second, it felt very real. Colors, smells, sounds... no haze that clouded it. Third, I remembered a lot of detail after I woke up. Not all, unfortunately. But what happened there? Well, nothing unusal. I was strolling the streets, doing a bit sight-seeing, like a tourist. Nothing spectacular, really. I went into some shop, checked out the goods (I distinctively remember an art store). Laughed at a few girls. Went to eat something. Doesn't sound very exciting, eh? Well, the real kicker set in when I dreamed of it again. Because, I remembered all from last time - I knew exactly, aha, that store is around that corner, that slope goes up to the castle, etc. So I set off and looked up some places I haven't been before. Went there, did my stuff. And the next time I visited there, those parts were there, too. This never happend to me with any other dream I ever had. I mean, I have had re-occurring dreams, that would run exactly like watching some familiar movie. But this was different. While the city remained the same, my actions did not, nor did those of it's inhabitants. And everytime I was in full control of my actions. It was like being teleported into some place, and getting familiar with it. Over the years, I've been to the city's castle, library, main market and museum. I've chilled at a waterfountain, or in the public bath there. I've met people, and yes, once or twice I was trespassing and checking out a especially neat house's garden. And everytime I had a "city dream", I realised it instantly and smiled. Writing about it makes me a little sad, in fact. I haven't been there in years, haven't written down anything about it and the memory begins to fade (although I doubt I'll ever forget some of the major events). And, having spent a lot of time thinking about it and discussing it with friends, I noticed a very curios detail about it: I can't put my finger on where, or exactly what, this place is. Although I remember talking to people, I don't really remember the topics. Or the language, even. I spent money there, but don't know what currency I used. I was in the city library (incredible place) and read books, but don't remember exactly what they were about or what language they were written in. No way to pinpoint it. Oh, and I didn't mention yet, although the architecture is very 17th-18th century with some outlandish bits and a general, odd twist, there are modern cars and stuff. Cloth looks modern, too. So, no reincarnation ramblings please.
  22. Ahh... MIDI soundtracks. Can't really add anything to the above on how to convert MIDI, but I'll give a word of warning: Don't hold your breath - it might not sound as expected. I first had this when I downloaded a few Monkey Island MIDIs. I knew it would sound different on my current soundcard, and actually looked forward to the "improvement". Alas, the instruments did sound better, but did not trigger the requested nostalgia. Back then, when I played the game for hours and hours, I had an AdLib soundcard - which had MIDI sounds that could be described as "synthetic" at best, and no sampling properties at all. I was so used to the synthetic sound that my beloved soundtrack sounded odd and different on a proper soundcard. The game soundtrack where I noticed this the most was Dune. The first one, that is. For it's time, it had amazing, incredible music. I searched the net for years(!) until I found a mp3 recording of the MIDIs on an AdLib - and I still love the original sound. Edit: And now I forgot to reply to the original request. If you have a stud machine, you can use DosBox, which has included MIDI emulation. If you have a less powerful machine, try VDMSound. Edit2: Oh man, I should not post while working - I just realised that I totaly missed the topic. Sorry!
  23. You're welcome! If you're still using Buzz, I recommend placing a Visualizer just before the Master, after the Mixer, if you use one. I use the Joe Smurf VUMeter, which offers a nice stereo overview, a spectrum, and an osc.
  24. Ah, sorry, I should have clearified. This has to do with the format of digital audio, and is best explained with a WAV file. OGGs and MP3s have similar problems, but complicate matters by the compression. Basically, what you see when you open an 8bit mono wav file with a hex editor are the dots of the sound graph, one byte per dot. These determine the current amplitude of the sound wave; this means in effect that an 8bit wav can take on 256 possible values, or from -127 to +127. Now, these phantom pops happen when the wave doesn't "swing" around the 0 value (x-axis), and the software (plugin, dll, whatever) resets after playing through the whole wav, which it usually also does if it's set to repeat the sound. I've found that getting rid of an y-axis shift of the waveform is a pain in the ass, as most editing software doesn't offer the option of an y-offset (a shame, because implementation would be incredibly easy). I try to avoid this effect altogether by running an oscilloscope during master stage. Btw, most prominently this effect occurs for me while using reverb with a medium room depth. You can counteract somewhat by changing the pulse-width of either the sound itself or some other synth - obviously, having a synth with an extreme PW all by itself is just causing the effect as well. A somewhat dirty but sometimes the only possible alternative is to use a compressor.
