  1. Personally, it's my favorite game ever, so I really hope you like it. It's a different kind of stealth game than Thief though, but it offers one of the best stealth espionage experiences of all time in my honest opinion.
  2. Though, after this Thief reboot debacle, I have infinitely more respect for The Dark Mod, it's community, and the awesome creators behind it. I just started playing No Honor Among Thieves for the first time, and the quality throughout the whole level is fantastic. It's a shame the new Thief can't capture the the Thief experience. Maybe they'll fix their mistakes with Thief 2 (Thief 5? I have no idea at this point. It be much simpler to continue the continuity after Deadly Shadows instead of rebooting the series, but that is a conversation for a whole other time).
  3. I'm definitely interested. Other than say Rise of the Triad, there haven't been many good shooters in the past few years. Hopefully the new DOOM can bring back all of that hellish insanity that I remember from the nineties!
  4. The night scenes in the original still had some vibrancy. The world was coated in deep pools of inky shadow that contrasted well with the well lit interiors. Everything in the new Thief simply looks grey. The only time it isn't is in some of the more well lit areas. I prefer the shadowy look of the original over this foggy mess.
  5. This is from the TTGL forums, where Stephen Russell personally replied to the fans.
  6. Aye, as am I. Still, I always played English variations of the game, so Stephen Russell was my introduction to Garrett, as well as over half the other characters in the game whom he voiced.
  7. It looks like it'll be a game the studio will hopefully learn from. It'll have many flaws, story most likely being chief among them, but I have the feeling it will also be a good game in it's own right. To this day, I will still defend Thief: Deadly Shadows to death as being one of my favorite games of all time, as well as my personal favorite in the series. It's flawed, sure, but it's flawed in a sort of charming way and you can understand why it is the way it is due to it's hectic development. I cannot bring myself to look at the new Thief game the same due to some asinine decisions made by the development team, primarily that of kicking Stephen Russell to the curb in favor of an inferior actor. No matter, I will still be looking at the game objectively, without bias. If this game is good, then I will sing it's praises to the world. Though, I have no doubt in my mind that it will be without flaws. Considering that, I say we should try to enjoy the game for what it is, giving notice to the things we liked or even loved, but still bringing attention to the things that weren't good, so that way, the following game won't make the same mistakes. Here's to hoping Thief is a good game, and also to hoping that Thief 2 will surely remedy any and all problems we may have. EDIT: Also, just to clarify, I'm still not buying this game. I'm going to rent it and see if it justifies a full retail purchase.
  8. But there is no incentive to do so if you can do a perfect "takedown" by just pressing one button.
  9. So now I can't even properly blackjack a guard myself without the game assisting me? Damn, that's a real shame.
  10. The writing is still rubbish, as well as the voice acting. I've never cringed harder.
  11. http://youtu.be/eEXTByuQfRc Two of my favorite games, coincidentally two of my favorite video game soundtracks.
  12. Reboots: Who needs continuity? It still bugs me how they pick and choose what from previous Thief lore stays and what goes.
  13. I wouldn't be surprised. Nixxes does some amazing ports.
  14. I liked Thief: Deadly Shadows, but the more I hear and see about this game seems very disheartening...
  15. Kassel, Germany, is where I was born, but I spent a few years in the states; Chicago, to be exact. My family is American, but we've traveled quite a bit. Currently I live in London, where I work.
  16. Ah, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. This personally is not only my favorite stealth game of all time, but my favorite game of all time. I'm going to go play it again.
  17. The shroud, though far from being the worst part of the game, is certainly the most annoying. In the last rather helpful and interesting update for the game, they told us about how almost all the heads-up-displays and user-interfaces were optional. The key word there is almost. Everything can be toggled, all but the shroud. That is terribly tedious.
  18. ...am I the only one who really liked Thief: Deadly Shadows?
  19. After rereading Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Romeo & Juliet, I recall a moment when Romeo says... "There is no world without Verona walls, But purgatory, torture, hell itself. Hence 'banished' is banished from the world, And world’s exile is death. Then “banished, Is death mistermed. Calling death 'banishment,' Thou cutt’st my head off with a golden ax And smilest upon the stroke that murders me." I always had a similar impression when it came to The City. Outside it's walls, there is no world, and if there is, it must be awful or not at all relevant. "Peril waits outside The City," the Queen of Beggars says. What is that supposed to mean? I can't stand vague, empty sounding warnings like this that hint at something bigger while revealing nothing. It's absolutely frustrating!
  20. I have the feeling that the dubiously named swoop mechanic will be game breaking. There is no feasible way Garrett can move that fast without make hardly any sound. Typically, everything in a stealth game has positives and negatives. For example, in the Thief franchise, buying equipment is almost always necessary to complete your next job and (of course) to get more loot. The trade off being, that the more equipment you buy, the more loot you'll inevitably have to steal in order to make a profit, or to have enough money to purchase more equipment for the next mission. However, the swoop mechanic, not keeping in mind that the mechanic in it of itself is physically improbable, has no consequence to it's use. Previous Thief games made a huge deal about timing and precision, when you make your movements and how. Say you need to cut across a hallway into a room down the corridor. In the old games, you'd have to keep in mind the lighting, floor surface types, guard routes in and out of the hallway, etc... But in the new Thief, you can swoop through the hall, into the room, even in the face of a guard. It's absurd.
  21. If Erin did get sent back through time, to even before The City was as prominent as it was, and before Garrett was the master thief, then what the hell was her train of thought at the time? I really hope she isn't the Queen of Beggars. I already hate the character as she is a spitting image of Granny Rags. Also, it begs (no pun intended) the question of why the hell she was silent about this, and didn't tell Garrett about what actually happened during the Channeling of the Primal, too prevent this from ever happening to the young Erin, and instead only spouts pointless and overly dramatic lines of mystic nonsense. You know, here's an idea. How about... Erin dies, and... nothing. She's dead. There's no big twist. She dies on the job, and it's an event that Garrett has to live with due to the fact he didn't raise her right; didn't give her the chances he had, and give her the upbringing she needed. Personally, that speaks to me much better.
  22. If I'm understanding the story correctly thus far... Garrett and Erin were partners in crime for several years but due to certain fatalities caused on Erin's behalf, Garrett breaks off their companionship and they part ways for a few more years. That is until the Channeling of the Primal. Basso organizes a heist for Garrett, a particularly big one. Though, Basso doesn't have full faith in Garrett completing this job and unbeknownst to Garrett, Basso hires Erin (surely at a price) to complete the same job, potentially rekindling their long lost partnership. Garrett arrives on the scene, witnessing first hand from the roof a strange ritual occurring below him. Complications occur when Erin also enters this scene. Conflict spark between the two as Erin prepares to lunge in head on before something surreal happens. Judging solely from the trailer, some strange rift or portal opens, and Erin falls to supposedly her death as Garrett reaches out to save her unsuccessfully. Again, judging from the trailer, we several close cut shots of Garrett swinging above this portal, possibly averting it, though by the end he is rendered unconscious. When he awakes, apparently a year has passed in his absence. With no recollection of recent events, with the exception of what he remembers before being incapacitated, he sees that The City has changed drastically. How, why, and when, is left unexplained, though it's clear that this mystery will be solved by the end of the game. Well, as overly convoluted as that is, I am curious about the game's plot. This is honestly an interesting set up, though the whole side story with Erin's Claw should be left out. I don't see why the writers couldn't simply say that she had an affinity for violence and tragically fell to her death, an event Garrett tried to prevent to the best of his ability. Do we honestly need to connect this characteristic and event with an obtainable item? And if they wanted the item in the game so bad, simply make it an item purchase, or something for the player to steal in a mission not relating to the story, i.e. in The City Hub. But as I said, this strange occurrence that causes Garrett to progress a year into the future (or be gone for a year) and also seems to have an effect on the inner workings of The City's society is intriguing to say the least. I'm curious to see the resolve, and I pray that it is good.
  23. Exactly! To quote , his performance is woven throughout the entire franchise. He was a vital component to the series, and simply shrugging him off as if this replacement were no big deal is a huge mistake for a game as auditory as Thief is.
