Very nice idea!

Bingo, that's exactly what I was thinking. The points between the 4 main ones could be half the size. If it were slightly angled like you were saying, we would definately be in business. I posted a link in the documentation heading to a list of all the doom 3 world tutorials. There is one section in particular about the GUI editor that interested me. I'm going to take a look at it and see what else can be done with it. The author used it to replace the existing hud with the classic Doom hud. Pretty neat.

I ditched the crystals idea and went back to the first idea I had several weeks ago. This was brought on by just now noticing the gem stone pictures in an earlier post. They inspired this.... I'm sure it could be dressed up to look much better than this. I just whipped this up in a few minutes, but it gets the idea accross. Like Springheel mentioned earlier, North is indicated by the red marker on the top of the sphere in a similar fashion to how they indicated North in Thief 1 and 2. The markers slide around the outside of the sphere. Now, imagine this with a true active light sphere and perhaps a tiny spike on top of each Navigation marker. It's basic, has features of both Legacy Thief and T3, but doesn't copy them exactly. Thoughts? Opinions?

Yup, I should definately change my handle to the minimalist. I have another idea that involves the crystal, but I have to go grocery shopping first. I think you'll like this idea better. It's not as minimal, but it feels very organic.
-
That is a very awesome design, but not quite in line with our design philosophy for the mod. I should really change my name to "The Minimalist" from New Horizon, but think "minimal" interface. If this thief were to really carry around a mystical light gem, I wonder if it would be some kind of rough cut stone laid into casing of some sort? Anyway, definately not shooting down what you did. It's gorgeous. Just trying to help fuel some other ideas. Okay, I just threw this together on top of Fingernails old test pic in about five minutes...but it might get the idea I had accross. Essentially just a crystal that rotates. The crystal would be angled inwards a bit so it actually points forward when you are facing north. The north end of the crystal would be pointy and the south end blunt. I didn't have time to do this so I just colored the north end a bluish green. I have another idea, but I won't get to work on that until later this evening. Thoughts?

Yeah, everything in T3 was bigger. It's like they were....compensating....for something. Ahhh yes, lame juvenile humor.
-
Very nice work god_is_my_goldfish. Wow, very nice indeed. Would you be interested in trying a mockup of my crystal noisemaker concept? I really like your concepts, so I would interested to see your take on it.
-
This is what i picture a shattering noise arrow crystal looks. I would think it would be more transparent, but this was the best I could do with my abilities. Lots of holes everywhere so the wind blows through and makes the whistle sound...but then it is weakened enough by the holes to shatter on impact. Just a suggestion. In response to having noise arrows at all. We should since our aim is to give people the tools to make thief like fan missions. Leaving them out would get us hung, much the way rope arrows hung the T3 devs. We're not looking to reinvent the wheel...maybe just refine it and make it smoother.

Body awareness is one of our goals. I believe we've decided to go purist with 1st person, but don't quote me on that. It would be my personal preference though.
-
Ahhh, another detail I hadn't considered. Quite true. I like the idea of the noise maker being one of the many mystical magic crystals. I wonder if its details could be achieved by using the same crystal model as the rest, but having the holes on the texture?
-
Hmmm, I wonder. What do you all think of the noise arrow being a crystal, still with holes in it to make the whistle sound like previously suggested, but upon impact it sounds like shattering glass? That would be quite the shock for a guard. >-- Shhhrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkk - SMAAAASH!!!!!-----> Guard: "WHAT THE BLOODY? Who's taffing about then???"
-
Yup, Garrett was always right handed. When using the bow a right handed person would draw back the arrow with their right hand, holding the bow in their left. It would be cool to have a left handed thief. If we're going that route...lets name him.....Tarregg....*cough* !
-
I quite like the noise arrow concept as well, it makes perfect sense. I'm going to put a vote in for the crystal based arrows and for gas mines instead of gas bombs. They're more sneaky.

Ahhh, great job. Best of both worlds. I've been downloading Doom 3 Editor Video tutorials like mad. I really want to learn this sucker and put these amazing textures to work. I should have some source photos to show sometime this week. I don't know if they will be any good, but here's hoping. I took pictures of some walls, doors and windows.
-
Agreed. Sounds like two versions of the door are in order. Awesome work by the way.

In keeping with the established feeling of Thief 1 and 2, the short sword is more viable than the long sword, or a dagger. The dagger was more an offensive than defensive weapon and I really don't think it fit Garrett personally. You can still up the ante with a defensive weapon...it just doesn't seem as sketchy as a dagger in my opinion.
-
Yeah, that would be a great idea. We could get 5 or 6 different looks from one model. Saves one heck of a lot of work.
-
Honestly, I didn't even think about the hand motion. I probably would suggest not even worrying about it because once you go that far you get into ...why doesn't he reach out to pick up loot and other things like that. Probably more trouble than it's worth. Things that are eaiser to control...like the holding the sword, arming the bow and arrow, lock picking....easily setup in a controlled environment. Anyway, just shooting the breeze and it would be fun to open a drawer.
-
I'm sure there's no rush for it, but definately something worth mentioning. If it's not too hard to do that is and if it is, leave it be.
-
Yeah, I probably wouldn't put mission critical information inside a closed drawer for fear of it never being found...but little loot extras and personal notes could be left in them, just to add a flavor of realism and depth to the world the characters reside in.
-
I was thinking about putting my T2 fan mission on hold and perhaps making it a Builder cathedral with our Mod....SDK and the answers that come with it pending of course.
-
Hmmm, I"m not a programmer...just the sound guy, but it sure would be cool if you could open drawers and find loot or letters inside. Something I was expecting for Thief 3 but it never happened. Not sure how hard it would be.
-
Really nice work. Very Thiefy, I'm extremely impressed. I can't wait to get back from my trip and start working on learning the editor myself.

Hey Gang, I'm still on my little trek through Canada. I'll be in Ottawa for a little while tomorrow and hope to see some possible texure sources. I don't have a digital camera unfortunatly....it's just a little cheapie that my mom gave me to take vacation pics with. She is going to be sorely disappointed when she finds out all that I did was take pics for this Mod. Ha. I'll be around with some pics sometime next week. Later. Tim, aka, NH

Yup, that is a thief font. It's the original font used for letters, journals and books in the original games. It would be SWEET to use that in our mod. I just modified Thief 3 with the original fonts for my Minimalist project. The other original Thief font is called Carelton. It was used on the menu's and some other places in game. Carleton
