  1. OMG, watching Cheetahmen's 8 bit graphics as well as their KS video was... a unique experience. Can't believe this project got funded.
  2. I think there is a lengthier explanation necessary. First things first: You should NEVER pledge more than you can afford to lose. In fact, only pledge so much that your wallet isn't hurt when the backed project goes down the drain. For me, this automatically excludes any tiers above 100 €/$/£. Second: There has already been at least one fraud attempt (http://www.kickstart...of-gods-and-men), but it got found out quite early in the campaign. Just read the comments section. I'm afraid that there will always be scammers who want their share when insane money is being thrown around (Project Eternity, anyone?). However, sometimes funded projects still fail, simply because even developers with the best intentions didn't think things through, or miscalculated, or ran into unanticipated trouble, or whatever reason there is. Creating something is rarely an exact science, and you never know when you suddenly hit a wall. In the end, things will sort themselves out. As Sotha mentioned, someone will surely make the connection if something shady is going on and expose the whole scam. But even if they don't, as long as you followed rule no. 1 (NEVER pledge more than you can afford to lose), you shouldn't be really hurt. Also, the sorting-out process will also mean that only fleshed-out projects will get enough attention and backers. In the next few days, I will post a thread for War for the Overworld, a game that might be considered as the third Dungeon Keeper game that was never released. Here the developer doesn't really have a name, but he has a lot to show and an extensive blog that shows his progress, both as a developer and that of his game.   3. This is Russia. The video that Diego posted above was largely Russia too. You know, if you know those folks and how they move through live, you are not surprised. They are just like this. More often than not, their motto seems to be "Consequences? So what?". There couldn't be a more stark contrast to us safety-loving TÜV-Germans.

  5. I would regard it as a revolution. You may or may not be aware of the two Dungeon Keeper games, the first having been made by Peter Molyneux himself during his time at Bullfrog, the second when he had left already. Still, after DK2 there was the hope that a third part would emerge someday, but all hopes were in vain, until a small group of very dedicated coders started creating their very own Dungeon Keeper game called War for the Overworld. They had their ups and downs, but they finally had their game ready to show a tech demo. Please note that you need the Unity browser plug-in: https://wftogame.com/demo Watch the Kickstarter video here: http://kck.st/YaLXcH What I am saying is: There was hardly a chance to get the development of this and other niche titles going without the help of crowdfunding, and this is what Kickstarter is for. Even if there will be a fatigue one day, this will only mean that developers will have to work twice as hard to attract potential backers. There are plenty examples for very successful Kickstarter campaigns, but also quite a few epic fails. Often, these fails resulted in the ineptitude of the developer to have a compelling video at start, to do good community work and to post updates regularly. The horrid failure that was the Nexus 2 campaign was one of them.
  6. The project is funded; the campaign was successful at literally the last minute. It's still 5 hours to go, but there shouldn't be any surprises.
  7. Sui Generis is nearing the end of its Kickstarter campaign, and it's still missing 15,000 £. If you are interested in this genre, please pledge the minimum amount of 10 £, as it would be a waste to let this little gem die. Please note that unlike the American Kickstarter, you can't use Amazon Payments but have to use your credit card to pledge.

  10. I don't go for name but for information. Of course, a famous name might get me to check out a project, but if it's ultimately uninteresting for me, I will hardly back it (my pledge for Star Citizen was based purely on the publicly available facts). Likewise, I canceled my pledge for David Braben's Elite: Dangerous, as the man has a horribly lackluster way of running his campaign. Back when it started, there was no video and basically no information. It ran on pure Elite nostalgia. It took days to even post a KS video for them, and even that showed very little footage from the game's prototype. When I discovered Limit Theory, a kind of uber-Elite, all the money I pledged for E:D went to LT, and then some. Josh Parnell (LT's creator) does not have a name, but he has a lot to show. And he has enthusiasm. This assures me more than any big industry name. Likewise, while I love god games, I pledged for Maia but will stay the hell away from Peter Molyneux's GODUS.

As the huge surge in pledges for Maia a mere three days before the end of its campaign has shown, if the right outlet (Total Bisquit, in Maia's case) announces the campaign to the world, even hopeless looking campaigns can make it. I wish Sui Generis good luck and hope to be able to play a finely polished game as soon as it's finished.

  14. Scarridale, you could just have used 7-zip, which is a free and extremely powerful packer/unpacker. You can choose from a variety of compression algorithms (the most extreme being LZMA2 for binary and PPMd for text), but pack/unpack ZIP files just as well (and unpack RAR files, of course). Did I mention that it doesn't cost you a penny? Edit: I love that last track. It's perfect for a cathedral or a pagan shrine in a cave or something.
  15. Scarridale, I agree that these tracks are a bit out of place for Dark Mod. However, the quality itself is really good. I think they would really shine in a sci-fi environment. I'm very much looking forward to what else you will can cook up. Keep up the great work!

Sotha, did you by chance had a look at this Kickstarter project: Limit Theory is basically a spiritual successor to the Elite series, with the exception that everything except sound and music is created procedurally. That being said, the developer has successfully experimented with procedurally generated music before and might include it as a stretch goal.   17. @Baddcog: Please share your impressions of the game with us. While I think that this is one of the best games ever made, some might think differently, and I'd like to know why.
  18. @Baal: Get Metro 2033 immediately! At this price, this one is the very best offer Steam has currently in store. There has hardly been a game that oozes atmosphere and "being there" like Metro. Also, you can choose separate languages for text/briefings and speech. I chose Russian for voice and English for texts, as I don't play the German version if at all possible. Metro's graphics are above and beyond most every game currently out, with the exception of the most current blockbusters. Get Metro 2033. At this extremely low price point (2,49 EUR) you are making the bargain of your life!
  19. Well, if you watch the last video you'll notice that you can get your I.M.P. robots to dig out rooms just like in DK. You also have chickens that, as I understand it, as used for the same purpose as in DK: for food. And you control The Hand and can manipulate stuff with it, place lights etc. Please note that this is a pre-alpha demo, hardly more than a demonstration of the basic tech. Since the dev is an avid fan of god games and of DK in particular, I very much imagine he will make his game at least similar not only in the way it's played, but also in terms of humour. But you are right, this is a science-fiction setting, maybe I should have emphasized this.
  20. What puts me off a bit (after the beautiful screenshots and the promise of realistic physics and the Morrowind pitch hooked me) is that you control a tiny character from the bird's eye view. I'd like to always be closer to the action and rather tilt the camera a bit to be able to see what's in front of me (as is possible in Ground Control). That's mainly the reason why I usually don't play hack'n slash games like Dungeon Siege, Diablo and the likes. Sui Generis promises to be much slower paced, which is good, and hopefully, if the project gets funded, the dev will enable free camera positioning.
  21. Nah, just gave it the minimum amount. I save my money for Limit Theory, a procedurally generated sandbox Elite style game. This is a one-man project as well, and since it totally hits home for me, I canceled my pledge for Elite: Dangerous to free up more money for LT.

Folks, I'm not sure if many of you are avid Dungeon Keeper players, but those of you who are, and who waited for another game that follows DK's footsteps, will be delighted to know that there is a campaign on Kickstarter for a new god game called Maia. Instead of being a medieval dungeon, the game will take place on a far-away planet where resident flora/fauna is so aggressive that the colonists had to move underground. Here, they will dig rocks, create buildings and fight against intruders.   24. Ah, damn, sorry, I was going to post that video myself. I'm still waiting for the video for another game called Maia, a kind of Dungeon Keeper god game. The dev says that he's currently busy to make a gameplay video, so I'm waiting until he finishes the video to create a separate thread. Anyway, Sir is already in the green (aka. funded), with 173% of the necessary sum and still 1 days to go. By the way, it's just £1,000 to unlock the £70,000 tier: The Riders "Our most ambitious NPCs will take on the form of a classic British fox hunt, one of the favoured bloodsports of the rich and landed.
