  1. You might PM SlyFoxx from TTLG. I recall he's involved in that sort of thing, although I don't know exactly.

    Parkan II

I'm happy you necro'd this topic, though. I was wishing aloud for exactly an Elite+FPS kind of game yesterday, and Dave & Dram just read my mind about what it might look like. For the record, you guys should try HardWar ... it's the Elite model set on an alien moon (as opposed to open space), so the action gets a lot more focused. I thought the most perfect game ever would be: - HardWar like, flying around a planet surface to buildings, each with different functions, buying up real-estate and starting businesses, etc... Also to different cities and bases on a planet. - plus you can get out of your ship and walk around in-ship, in hangers and on the surface FPS style ... for fighting and story actions (Deus Ex like) - plus maybe an RPG and a narrative (also Deus Ex like), - and more sim of building business (like Dave mentioned, and the hanger parts of Hardwar) - and then you could fly into orbit, dock with orbiting stations, or make interplanetary burns to other planets/moons, seamless entry to the surface, and each with their own environments / architectural style (Orbiter like) ... - most of the action is on the planet/moon surface or in stations (e.g., dogfighting is honestly better in atmospheric flight than vector flight). (sounds a lot like Sneaksie's list, but I honestly posted this same list in the Hardwar forum a while back, long before I saw this.) I had already had a vision of jerry-rigging an opensource Doom3 TC with the opensource Orbiter, but of course that would be an absurd undertaking, and it would be better for a professional team to make the game outright. Anyway, here's wishing. Parkan II looks like it's on the right track, but not .. quite .. there .. yet.
  3. Congratulations Ben. I remember the first time you were trying this. I'm happy it finally worked out.
  4. I hope all of you got the newsflash that Fallout 1 has been released for free on GameTap now, to get some momentum going for the new game.
  5. That's ... quirky. But it works, like you say.
  6. Looking at the nickname I'd say the Matrix.
  7. I remember when I was studying German in school, a friend would ask me, "oh great, can you translate this Russian for me? German and Russian are almost the same language, right?" Lol, what? They're nothing even remotely alike. I always thought it was funny; some people are so clueless about the world. Of course we studied a little Russian as kids because we all wanted to be spies when we grew up. (As cool as that might have been, though, I'm happier to have Russian friends now...) edit: post #666 \m/
  8. I used a book on Jazz music theory that I like that also covered general theory along the way; but I don't have any idea how it stands in relation to other books (although I have to say that jazz theory gets into some pretty deep territory) but it's probably not the one for you unless you want to concentrate on jazz. It's still worth making the point, though, that you might consider a theory book coming from the perspective of whatever genre you are most interested in ... classical, jazz, blues, rock, etc... It gives the theoretical stuff you're learning a practical edge and you can apply it to what you want to play more easily. It also keeps you interested in the abstract details when you see how it translates into real music (that you like). Since I don't want to leave you totally empty handed, here are two online resources that are ok... http://www.musictheoryminute.com/index.htm http://www.trainear.com/Music_Theory_Links_09_2008.php I found this surfing once on online guitar lessons that looked good (since I play guitar too, although I'm most at home with piano). I haven't tried it, but I've been considering it. http://www.guitarschool.net/ And speaking of music and math, this is a really fun utility, where you use mathematical algorithms to compose. http://musicalgorithms.ewu.edu/
  9. Get some trees in front of those walls or some ivy growing up them and they're not so boring anymore. Did you mention what the performance was like? Could you put this sort of building in a nice, not too large, setting and walk around in game?
  10. Legal buzzwords aren't any better, or "magic words" ... If you can show that this word applies to what you're doing, suddenly it's kosher (or forbidden, as the case may be). One infamous one that I've studied and sort of like is "dangerous anthropomorphic interference" as it applies to the # ppm of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. Well, pick any # ppm and it's "dangerous" for somebody. Some countries are already losing/lost glaciers and coral reefs now, and some islands will lose real estate very soon, a big deal when you're a tiny country. Some countries will actually benefit with warming. So how do you pick one number, and what makes it specifically "dangerous". And then there's the "anthropomorphic" and "interference" parts to deal with...
  11. Saw this on TTLG, but wanted to give my applause at the source ... Good work, man. (")-b Makes me excited about what DR will be capable of when the FMs start rolling in.
  12. Boy that looks fun. Makes dromed look like DR's pet chihuahua by comparison. Watch out for that thunderstorm on the way, though!
  13. Hopefully some of these people will find their way to thedarkmod.com in the meantime. Are we getting any new members?
  14. They look good. I've always been of the opinion that the woodgrain should run parallel to the length of planks, though.
  15. Its post looks like it was written by Babelfish herself, lol. No offense (on your English), just funny. I love those outdoor screenshots. My kind of ambiance.
  16. wow, it looks great. I wonder to what extent the assets that are being made for a lot of these incredible mods will be transferable to TDM, with permission of course. There's just so much great work happening in so many nooks and crannies of cyberspace, I hope an ethos develops where people can share the love so we can all benefit from these great assets, instead of them just staying locked in one mod never to be used again.
  17. Haha, yeah ... it's like "well, the hype fooled you guys the first time, so rather than focusing on all the problems, let's get back to looking at that original hype." They aren't even coy about it.

You're devoting so much time to a FM-construction toolset and haven't played a FM in years? lol, I gather a lot of your commitment comes from just making the thing itself ... ps, you really ought to play a few recent ones, though ... Broken Triad, 7 Sisters, and Mission X, if only because they've been so brilliant.
  19. Yeah, they're talking about it like it was some new algorithm doing something special. This makes a normal map from 2 photos, one with flash and one without, and then the algorithm works out the height. Does the nvidea plug-in use just one photo? I remember a program that creates a texture/normal map with 5 photos, one "naked" and 4 with light/shadows from each compass direction, and it's about as good an accurate/"workhorse" method as you can get using just a photo-base, although you have to set all that up. I'm wondering if this is some sort of middle track in that line, less work-heavy, but still without (much) post-work.
  20. Saw this link on TTLG. Here's something you'd might like to do, Unstoppable. A game club is playing Deus Ex this coming month: http://www.brainygamer.com/the_brainy_game...ge-game--1.html
  21. I think you've got your threads mixed up there, chief.
  22. I predict when Deus Ex 3 comes out you're going to spontaneously combust. Whenever the pieces of you coagulate back together long enough to type, though, I'm sure I can't wait to read what they really thought. Happy hibernating in the meantime.
  23. This is fun news. Congratulations, Macsen. A Prachett comparison must feel nice. It's sort of cool that you'd be rewarded for a fantasy novel. I don't really know the facts on it, but I'd imagine that books like this would appeal to people that would otherwise feel overwhelmed by so much serious realism everywhere in Welsh lit, and would get turned off reading Welsh books, at least recreationally to relax, although they would want to if more books were there. See if you can get your own cult following of trendy Welsh fantasy fanatics...
