  1. Seeing as how this is generally speaking the "Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory" thread (feel free to rename and edit posts as needed, eh mods?) I figured I'd make this post here. Two of the main developers from Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, the greatest stealth game ever made next to Metal Gear Solid 3, Thief 1/2 and Hitman Blood Money, walk through the best level in the entire series and explain their thought and developmental processes. There is a lot to learn from this video.
  2. Everyone here is paranoid of lawyers, and rightfully so, due entirely to how fragile things become when you involve actual intellectual property and turn what is legally freeware into a fan creation. It's much more comfortable overall to not exist on the whim of a bored lawyer who feels like he needs to validate his paycheck.
  3. That's because it's average. It's not great, not bad. I would recommend any given game out of the Hitman trilogy and any of the other two Death to Spies games first, but the game is made of small, memorable aspects that will end up saving it into a memorable place. If you're okay with a simplified Hitman game that has interesting levels, like killing several saboteurs on a USS Aircraft Carrier during the height of the cold war, all under the nose of the Navy within, you'll probably like this game. This game and Snake Eater are the only damned things that scratch my itch for 1960's espionage.

    Tenchu

I've memorized the layout thoroughly and use the sensor in the lower left to approximate. This means I get lots of tight kills from the front and a lower time overall, making for a more watchable video.

    Tenchu

So, after testing out Tenchu 1 & 2 I can safely say I'm not a fan of the controls simply because the 3D view and lack of dual stick camera controls renders the game hell to actually control, along with the draw distance which ensures you're just as likely to be ambushed as the guards you're trying to kill. Instead I've decided to just skip ahead to Wrath of Heaven, as it's the earliest Tenchu game I seem to really, really jive well with. This will, to say the least, be a first for my series seeing as how most of my work is strictly based around ghosting.
  6. After playing this level I feel like saying "Eat shit, Assassin's Creed, tense & slow mountain climbing is way cooler than fast and overly capable parkour", but that's probably just me. I am curious if anyone else bothered to do this, but as usual I'm pretty sure the answer is no, and it really doesn't matter either way. Regardless, I'm curious if there's some way to all loot this mission without the box usage.
  7. I managed to pick it, it's just a stupid specific and difficult frob. I really think we should have some kind of patch to ensure it's easier to pickpocket sleepers. Other than that, one of the crosses in the hay in the chest in room 1 is very, very difficult to get at. I was otherwise able to do the entire level at stealth score 0 with no knockouts, and am happy to say I can lock all doors behind me as well. As well, the inventor's guild book leftover is inside a chest I can't shut once it's open. Finally, I think you should be able to shut the trapdoor once you've opened it. If you can, I didn't find it easy. I'll hold off on the video until you've patched things up, Airship.

  9. 8x antialiasing and 8x texture anisotropy, with vertical sync on. Ambient rendering, interaction shader and post processing is all enabled, with object details (LOD) very high.

    Tenchu

I'm considering covering Tenchu 1, 2 and 3, but 1 & 2 seem absolutely awful in terms of how well the controls aged, so I'm very seriously considering skipping to 3. Either way, I've noticed they're some of the finest in terms of elimination stealth, but am curious if anyone here has experience with them, and if so is there anything they would recommend me knowing or doing going in?

This may be an engine limitation, as generally speaking the game's frame rate has always been prone to tank during larger more open areas, especially the more of the level I've already explored and the longer the session goes on.
  12. So, I'm probably going to make a video of this in the future. But not unlike Alekhine's Gun coverage, I'm holding off until I can cover this in a more positive light. I feel like this level really, really hits the framerate hard, and until the game is more optimized on the whole I'm going to hold off on actually featuring it on the channel since showing an amazing level at 15-20 frames per second doesn't look too glamorous next to other things on my channel.
  13. Games that are this old are often more fun to master than newer games. Mechanical depth tends to do that, though to be fair newer games do have entries like Metal Gear Rising, Devil May Cry 4 (Special Edition) and Double Dragon Neon, so you have glimmering examples.

Correct.

  16. I'm aware, it's one of the reasons I'm asking. To be frank though, I haven't seen it used well in any Dark Mod missions as far as I know, which surprises the hell out of me.
  17. So I just remembered Duke Nukem 3D had two incredibly offsetting levels, Tier Drops and more specifically Lunatic Fringe, that used non-euclidean space to mess with the player and now I'm wondering if that's actually something feasible to do in the Dark Mod? Nothing like 720 degree circles and multi-room spaces to scream "Lovecraftian", I would think.
  18. It's almost a decade now, the main writer (Marc Laidlaw) left, and this was after Gabe basically admitted in some interview that due to Valve's flat structure where anyone works on whatever they want the game wasn't getting much attention. I don't think we're getting it, since Valve isn't about to admit it's cancelled. That said, it amuses the hell out of me Sven coop basically offers the entirety of Half Life 1's campaign for free, Black Mesa used to offer it all for free (that's a discussion for another thread), albeit remade and on a new engine... And now this. With this, I honestly feel like it's safe to say fans are carrying the absolute majority of Half Life's weight.
  19. Can I just say that this puts Thief 4's entire hub to absolute shame in terms of just how much vertical design there is going on? Holy shit.
  20. This resulted. No regrets. Really though, if anybody has any advice for me going through this feel free to give it, I'm not against spoilers. Definitely going to play this on impossible at some point, though I'm surprised by the large lack of documentation on the game, no good item listings or tables.
  21. For what it's worth I've read that actual sex crimes go down in areas with pornography and the like allowed, while those with more restrictions tend to have more.
  22. I really liked the level, it proves that speed build doesn't inherently have to be bad. Wonderful sense of speed was possible here, and emphasized due to a lack of great hiding spots.
  23. I actually have to say this is my favorite mission out of the bunch, if only because you rarely get this much well done insight into the undead. The weepers were absolutely brilliant. I do feel like there's a strange sense of disbelief in the fact that Ulysses sounds exactly like Thomas Porter, but it can't be helped anymore than a short of actors can be.
  24. So this is a weird bug. I'm able to maintain stealth score 0, up until, I kid you not, This doesn't alert any AI (I've checked using tdm_ai_showalert 1), and ends up creating a single level 2 alert. Obviously this isn't something huge, but such an anomaly may want to be noted for future maps and bug related issues. I can honestly say this is the most left field required bust I've ever seen.
  25. Enemies will hear sound, just like Death to Spies here, but it's more based around the use of disguises. Running too much or holding the wrong weaponry or being found by the wrong persons in the wrong clothes in the wrong place will completely botch things, for instance.
