  1. Ishtvan, I raced through your post as I'm at work, so pardon me if I'm stating what you've already written. First thing, loudness (dB) decreases as the inverse square of the distance, yes I think retracting aditional dB depending on the material the sound collides against is well in order, but coming up with a muffling factor for every material is more a trial and error thing - it all boils down to what "feels right" ingame. Regarding your steps question - a whisper heard from 10cm is about 30dB loud. A normal talk between two people is approx 70 dB loud. Using these two as reference I'd say normal steps would be in the 50dB area, while running 60dB at least (add clothing noises, breathing etc). Sneaking steps would be in the 30dB area. A 10dB increase in loudness is perceived twice as loud as the original sound. A 20db increase in loudness is perceived 4 times as loud as the original sound. Some trivia: sound becomes painful at 120dB and at 180dB your hearing tissue dies. Don't ask me where I pulled this from, my memory is a dark realm of foggy matrixes and unidentified information. I'm sure more detailed (and perhaps correct) data can be found online, but as a starting point this should do. mrD
  2. Great idea! There have been some music requests for inspiration from the 3d and concept art guys, this thread will hopefully make them happy. mrD
  3. Excellent find! I'll try comparing such a stereo sound with a standard mono FORWARD version and a mono reversed stereo mixdown of the version ingame. But that's going to happen once I get home. mrD
  4. Looks really good, but the wrist movement should be more obvious, the movement as it is now resembles a rowing-like movement. Try to make him extend the sword more by tilting the wrist a bit. mrD
  5. As Geocities blocks any non-Geocities referrals, doing a simple copy/paste of the URL into a new browser window amends the problem. mrD
  6. I've been messing with a theme today: audio/unfinished/mrdischarged/untitled_theme.ogg still a WIP, feedback considered it might be a mansion-thing of some sort. Added a scary ambience of sorts audio/unfinished/mrdischarged/scary/amb_undefined_01.ogg Remastering a previous church theme right now.
  7. Very nice medieval theme there! However something needs to be done with the actual voice samples so they're made more credible - they lack the organic feel in my opinion (I don't think they're multisampled, are they?). I'd try to cover it up with strong reverberation and a wee bit of delay perhaps, it should also add to the whole cathedral feeling. Perhaps slowing down the tempo a bit and set the attack speed to a higher setting, hence making the voices more enigmatic and the whole theme turns more dramatic. A great job still! mrD
  8. Guys, you could use gmail to exchange files that big. mrD
  9. Hi and welcome! Since you asked for feedback, here are some first thoughts - the underground theme is really nice - dark and moody, but the sweeps are too obvious, the theme would be much better without them! It has a good rhytm to it, but the sweeps have too much synth character in my opinion. Yes, I'm one of those "YOU MUST NOT RECOGNIZE THIS INSTRUMENT!!!" types of people... The music box loop would be great if the whole thing was raised by an octave. There's room for improvement in the slowdown as well, but timestretching would distort it, maybe you can change tempo step-by-step drastically in your sequencer? The slowdown is a bit abrupt at this point. mrD
  10. After reading some documents it turned out that occlusion translates to "geometry affects volume of the sound", not the actual propagation. Hmpf! mrD
  11. Here's what I discovered during today's tests: - sounds are placed into the map via entities called "speakers". Speakers can play either direct wave files or wave files as defined in soundshader files. Soundshader files are text files with sound definitions. Besides pointing to the location of actual files, they can contain sound attributes for every sound file, such as max/min distance, looping, screenshake and so forth. I have not succeeded in loading wave files directly, but I did manage to load them by using soundshaders. - the "min/max distance" speaker attributes work fine, they define the offset and threshold of the sound in a defined radius. If the min distance equals to the max distance, then the sound will be cut off after the player has reached its threshold radius. If the min distance is lower than the max distance, then the sound will fade out smoothly as the player moves away from it. A related attribute is "omnidirectional", which will ignore panning - I succeeded into loading a map-wide music file by using this, and it can be heard in stereo throughout the map. - speakers have an attribute called "occlusion" which should occlude the propagation of the sound from this very speaker if the attribute is set. This howerver does not work! At least not on the maps from the CVS. Could it be that brushes in D3 maps have some additional SUPERSECRET attribute that makes sound propagate differently? In the sound editor video tutorial (from doom3world.org) the lecturer demonstrates occlusion when the buzzing sound of a lightbulb changes "shape" (becomes muffled) as he enters another room via a portal... I did not manage to reproduce this behaviour. That's it for now... I hope anyone can understand this mishmash, I'm not good at documenting things! mrD
  12. Yessir! Will post my findings as the tests progress. mrD
  13. Haha that's both funny and extremely cool looking! Thumbs up!
  14. I'm one of the minimalistic HUD fans. Actually, if it were for me the HUD'd be completely blank and the lightgem would be replaced by an increased heartbeat rate/volume. Anyhow, I say make them separate and make them toggleable. They're not the actual game, they're just helpers. mrD
  15. Yeah that furnace was bad, I was rather tired. But I fixed it, actually I've made 2 loops out of it, one for a "hatched" version of the furnace ie. a furnace with a closed hatch or door or somesuch and the other a full blown fire-in-your-face type of furnace sound. /TheDarkMod/audio/unfinished/mrdischarged/factory/furnace_fire_hatched_LP.ogg /TheDarkMod/audio/unfinished/mrdischarged/factory/furnace_fire_open_LP.ogg
  16. A list of what's been done and approved for ingame use would be very helpful indeed!
  17. I picked the factory setting as my starting point. I've spent some time shuffling through some not-so-recent sample CDs and synthesized some noises myself. The whole lot is going up to /TheDarkMod/audio/unfinished/mrdischarged/factory/ Some machinery hits, a couple machine/engine ambient loops and some other effects.
  18. Well, certainly! But as I possess no quality recording equipment, first-hand sampling is off. I'm however rather proficient at sample-scavenging/processing as far as sound effect creation goes. There's 5 people actively working on various audio aspects of the game so far? That's quite a team! mrD
  19. Hi, I've learned about this project a couple of days ago and you cannot imagine my excitement at the discovery! As and avid oldie gamer and a Thief fan, I've been daydreaming of a project like this for quite a while now and my girlfriend enouraged me to eventually post here. I've been making music for a hobby since my early teens (27 now) in various bands and on my own. I've created a number of fantasy/rpg inspired short pieces in the past along my usual repertoire of harsh industrial and ambient pieces. I am well aware of the fact a soundtrack is a bit off the mark at this early stage, but I'd be willing to help out in other ways as well - ambiences, sound editing and the likes. I have some of my work online, but due to bandwidth restrictions I cannot give the url out openly. I will send it via private messages should you be interested. I have never worked on a mod or a tc, but being employed at a software company I'm well aware of the ups and downs that come with software development. Thanks, mrD
