  1. Followed instructions. Went to play dark mod splash screen came up then a runtime error and it crashed. Any ideas?
  2. I know this may be a little bit of a dangerous topic given legal issues, or maybe it's just a topic you're all sick of hearing about because a billion other noobs have brought it up before me... but how feasible, probable would it be for someone to convert the original games into dark mod (even if the level geometry and architecture haven't been improved at all, it'd still have the immense advantage of being reliably playable in modern versions of windows on modern PCs, and having way better lighting, etc etc...) I'd love to play through those games again in a more up to date engine, even if yes, a lot of their charm was their dated technology, it'd still be great.
  3. New update for may 2008 on www.thedarkmod.com
  4. I entered eagerly the dark mod project... i just found out that it is much more ambitious than i tought, i read that the dark mod is either a tool set and a campaign. Just some quick questions.. What do you intend for a complete tool set? a level editor with a library containing textures, models, voices etc etc? The campaign is just a project still not started ? i mean, the tool set is the main objective of the dark mod team? and only after having completed it, will the missions developement start? i ask this because i'm mainly interested in developing the campaign part. and.. last but not least.. my precious stools models will be inserted on the library of the tool set or in a mission?
  5. Seasons Greetings Taffers! New Horizon here to spread Holiday Cheer on behalf of The Dark Mod team. Our members have all been working especially hard since the release of the Doom 3 SDK on October 15th, 2004. We are delighted with the thought of bringing an alternative Thief Style gaming experience to your Windows and Linux PC's. For anyone not familiar with Dark Mod, here is a little bit about us. Dark Mod aims to release an Editing Toolset to the fan community by way of the Doom 3 editor. This will be accomplished by performing a total conversion of the Doom 3 Editing tools into a Stealth oriented gaming platform, inspired by Looking Glass Studios "Thief" series. This will allow the community to begin producing "Thief" Style fan missions with plenty of variety in models and equipment to choose from. In other words, you makes thems Sneaksie missions as youse seesie fits to makes thems! Darkmod will include a few example missions with the Editors release to help explain the documentation. At a later date you should see either a campaign or series of stand alone missions from us to further demonstrate the possibilites of Dark Mod. Now, before I get to the surprise I want to answer a few questions that have been sent our way recently. 1. Is there a 3rd person view? Third person is not supported at this time, we wish to provide a solid first person gaming experience. This does not rule out the possibility of it being added at a later date, but our primary goal is to create a solid gaming platform first! 2. Is wall flattening included? As of this writing, it's being considered. 3. Will you have a central hub for missions, like the city in TDS? Since we will initially be releasing a toolset this will likely not be the case. Fan Mission builders may end up creating this on their own, or you may see one in a later release. While we do not dismiss TDS as a source for inspiration our primary guidance comes from the Looking Glass Thief games. 4. Are there more movement speeds beyond Run, Walk, Creep? Too early to say yet really. We do want to explore other options as we're not bound by Thief rules, but at the same time we want to retain a certain familiarity. 5. What equipment from TDS will be included/not included? You will see the basic toolset or variations thereof...plus a few surprises. Oh and YES, that does include rope arrows! 6. Swimmable water? Yes. Now, on to the surprise. This surprise has been worked on in secret for several weeks by our member of many talents Tyrot and our equally talented Lead coder Sparkhawk, who wrote the concept for what you are about to see. Everyone on the team has worked extremely hard since we came together and I am proud to have watched our team grow stronger and more focussed as the months have passed. The work of many talented team members has been put to excellent use for this present. I hope you all enjoy this gift to the community as much as we have. Happy Holidays YOU TAFFERS!! This one is for you. DARK MOD TEASER TRAILER DARK MOD HI-RES TEASER You will need the XVID codec to view this presentation.
  6. Yesterday I started to play Dark Messiah. I only went into the first mission, where you have to take down that cyclop, and so far I liked it. The story introduction reminded me a bit about Half 2 though. There are some nasty bugs though. When I tried to use that telekinetic spell on a fixed box, it crashed, and when I shut it down, it always locks my resolution to 640x480x256 for some reason. Only solution is to reboot to get back to my normal desktop. Anybody else played it?
  7. I guys you are famous Dont know if this was already discuss here but you have appear on the magazine where they talk about the Thief´s Den Mission.
  8. It has come to my mind that some people including myself would rather see consistent science fiction explanations to and occurances of technology, society, and history thereof, instead of something provisional at the whim of every FM maker. I propose to conduct a long-term in-depth discussion among those interested in the nature of things met in the thief-universe to set some standards along which FM makers might then choose to comply to make consistent FMs. For example; does the 'city' have electricity or not? there is no wiring in early missions because it's implied, because it's always inside the stone walls? it appears in T2 missions. The light fixtures have antennae - does that mean they receive electrical power through the air like Tesla propositioned instead of by wires? The only applications of electricity as far as visible is motors (mostly elevators) and lighting (incandescent) (what kind of filament? carbon paste or tungsten?) Can we assume they have the same fundamental chemical elements as we do? same physics laws? I thought it would be neat if their universe actually fully functioned according to Aristotelean physics. Electricity means probably they have heat engines to generate it or some kind of generators getting from "quantum fluctuations of the void" as Tesla proposed and as hundreds of crank inventors claim today (google zero point). In our universe electricity discovered and studied in very great detail by Faraday way way before it was used. it remained a scientific curiosity for a very long time, then Edison decided to electrically light NY (of course london got it first), and prices of oil and lighting gas fell. Can we assume that instead of their planet being a rock around a fusion plasma ball in space, it is actually surrounded by the crystalline spheres influencing events and being led by the primal force? I'll post some lecture notes up to today from the history of technlogy course I'm taking. It's a bunch of mS word docs in zip, so a little inconvenient for some of you i'm sure.
  9. I recorded this today. What I was envisioning was a mission in light snow fall, a night where the streets are emptied in the cold, the people themselves warming in front of a hearth indoors. A lone thief is seen as a silouette scurring across the slick rooftops, a trail of breath fading behind him along the skyline. They say that crime diminishes in the winter. Its too cold for burglary. Perhaps that's exactly what the guards will be expecting on a night like tonight... http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EXHCRT0O Thanks for listening!
  10. http://www.gametrailers.com/game/2582.html Your thoughts?
  11. I slipped along a link to LinuX-Gamers and they have Thief's Den on their front page , check it out - http://www.linux-gamers.net/
  12. It seems for me, no matter what I try, doom 3 crashes when I use 1.3.1 update. Yes its the 1.3.1.1304, not the 1302 which I know is bad. I dont know what it is, but the game only runs with 1.3, and thief's den demo crashes with 1.3 version. What is the big deal with 1.3.1 patch that its so needed beyond the 1.3? Is there some hack or option I can set so the game runs simply in version 1.3? from what I know the executables since version 1.3 are the same, so really there cant be that much important updates from version 1.3.1 that it couldnt run this mod if it was set to let it run with version 1.3. please, anyone?
  13. not sure where to post this sorry if its in the wrong area (im new). thief TDP/gold Thief 2 the metal age and thief deadly shadows were some of the best games ever made. its kinda sad that looking glass studios went out of business. and eidos is done with thief (from what i hear). anyways i didn't really like T2X, the shadows of the metal age or whatever, that game was shit, it wasn't fun at all. most fan missions that i played weren't really enjoyable for me either. i was just wondering whether this is going to just be like one big fan mission or are their going to be real professionals working on this? what are the objectives of this mod and how much work needs to be done before a demo or something is released? again i am new to these forums, just came upon this site/mod yesterday, sorry if i did something i wasn't supposed to. thanks
  14. It's not a priority but did anybody think or maybe even made already some icon to replace that pentagram on the desktop? There's no reason for being still reminded, what game we're modifying... I wish we could change even the name of the exe file to something like thedarkmod.exe but that's impossible, I suppose...
  15. Hi guys. This mod is looking great. I just have a few questions. Sorry if anyone gets pissed off. Is the mod playable yet, if so where can I get it? If its not done. what percentage is done and what is remaining? I'm really excited about this mod becuase The Thief series is the one and only stealth game I have ever liked but I liked it oh so much. It was so perfect. And to all the TDS haters out there, that game was incredibly made I don't care what you guys say.
  16. I'm using a basic Doom3 glass shader, which is almost fullbright in the dark - I'd however like it to be dark. Can this be accomplished? If so, how? Thank you and kind regards gleeful PS: Here's my shader textures/darkmod/gleeful/glass_mosaic_1 { noSelfShadow noshadows twosided translucent glass forceoverlays qer_editorimage textures/darkmod/gleeful/glass_mosaic_d { maskcolor map makealpha(textures/darkmod/gleeful/glass_mosaic_d) } { blend gl_dst_alpha, gl_one maskalpha cubeMap env/gen2 red Parm0 green Parm1 blue Parm2 texgen reflect } }
  17. I would love to help in the developement of this product. I have every thief 1/g/2 mission i have been able to find. I have even purchase the CD from Komag twice. Thief is awesome, how ever I feel Thief 3 was horrible, and do not classify it as Thief 3. The Dark Mod is my Thief 3. I would love to be one of the users to play with your beta in the beginning. I am not a professional modder, but I have always wanted to create my own levels. So I figured I would ask if I may attempt to create some simple levels with your mod during the beta stage. I figure I might as well ask, either way I anticipate your engine, and check your site at least once a week. Keep up a great job, you Taffers. Thanks, Blake K. Stoltman
  18. I kinda finally realised, now that I have gotten back into fan missions for thief 1/2 and playing the first mission of CoSaS. I would be real kool to play the Dark Mod since the main character doesn't have a name or anything, game creators would have more flexibilty on thier missions as far as storyline (if there is one) would go, Their not tied down to using garrett thus use some other characters people come up with an creativitiy would go through the roof... or at least sneaking on the roof.......er whatever... I'd Imagine this has already been disscussed but hey, I absolutly CANNOT wait (well I can) for the Dark Mod to be released, cause it would be kick ass for a thief-oriented game for Linux! an it looks so damn good. So yeah.... can't wait to see Judging by te forums new format this game looks more or less like a dream come true! SO thanks Dark Mod team! (oh an yeah I kinda don't like the dagger in thief anymore..kinda promoted killing.. I got used to ghosting, an Oddity was right about that.) Roguetech
  19. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is like a mix between Thief 3, Diablo and Oblivion. You can upgrade your skills to become stealthy and such. First part of my mod is extremely simple: thieverizing the controls (waxds, instead of wasd) Second part would be adding the blackjack (when Lvl 3 stealth acquiered) and adding the lightgem and with the extensive moddability of the source engine, many user-created missions will be possible This by no way is meant to compete with the darkmod ofcourse, but I always preferred source over doom3
  20. Just finished Dark Messiah of might and magic, very nice game based on the source engine. anyway you can max out skills on thievery/sneaking and the game plays alot like thief, you can even snipe with bows and there is a rope bow at some point (yes rope arrows ala thief). Near the end there is a suit of stealthy armor with the letter 'G' in the collar. The game has alot more combat than you would normally see in thief though. Ohh yeah remember that discussion about re-animating ragdoll bodies we had a bit back, seems they've done it in this and it's pretty good quality. Just somethign to look out for.
  21. i dont understand why the URL is the same for the whole site.... like the URL in the address bar never changes. and its particular frustrating when u click reload or refresh and it sends you back to the main page
  22. Just a quick message to support you for the mod: I watch closely every news you guys bring us since the beginning & I just wanted to say that I'm a big fan of your work (being myself a coder, I pretty excited to see what the release will look like, how it'll run, etc...). Anyway, I know how much time it takes to achieve such a project, what "dedication" & "passion" mean in those circomstances and so unlike many players around, I prefer waiting a looong time seeing the good work done rather than get a poor mod rapidly. So keep up the good work, dudes & I hope that all will be ok for the project in the coming months.
  23. We spend too much time here already, yapping on and on, myself excluded. We should pick a book and read it, organize our far flung chats into a potent self educational resource. We can take as long as we like, I'd say a month per book would be a fair pace. No pressure, actually not much new other than putting some order to what we are doing already. I think it could prove to be a really valuable experience. What do you guys think? I realize everyone is busy as hell too, but we do all seem to find the time to read different stuff, so lets just get it on the same sheet of music, get some synergy going.
  24. Here's a few internal pics you might enjoy. Don't take anything too seriously.
  25. Looking to join The Dark Mod team? We currently need a web-designer capable of creating a web management system. We are starting to get too many textures and models to keep track of manually. What we would like is an internal web management system that would allow team-members to upload thumbnails of their models/textures, along with the ability to update their status. Models and textures would be organized by category, and some kind of search function for locating, say, all wall textures, would be nice. As it's only for internal use, it doesn't have to be pretty, just effective. If this seems like something you can handle, please let us know. Available server technology is Apache, PHP, MySQl, Perl running on Linux.
