Pack the savegames

This minor issue was already discussed here. But still...

 

The savegames are very large and contain some strange unnecessary information (there is some text that looks like DarkRadiant docs... what is it doing in saves?!). Perhaps some data should not be written to the saves. But the easiest way to greatly reduce the size of saves is to zip them. I know that all the necessary zip libraries are already used in TDM code. The idea is quite simple: pack the whole FM directory when uninstalling mission and unpack it while installing if required.

 

Maybe someone knows another ways of solving the problem?

 

What are the plans of the TDM team about saves?

Well, you can do it manually of course, which is exactly what I'm doing atm. I'm using 7zip with LZMA Ultra compression and the largest Dictionary (64 MB) and Word (273) size. The resulting file has an incredible compression ratio (1.2 GB compressed to 4.5 MB!!!). The downside is of course that it's not done automatically.

7upman, you seem to have the savegame bug, because your safefile is ridiculously huge. There is a fix for windows users, referenced in this post. Not sure, if it's the right (final) file though. Better read the whole thread...
