Sculptris 3d modeling

Wow, that's very impressive work, down to the fine details.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

Thanks for all the possitive comments :)

Looks great! :) The fabric is the onle weak point, IMO.

You could find even more ;)

Not *too* many polygons, I hope. A nice piece like this would look great in a grand statuary hall or garden.

This whole scene is over 1,2 million tris. I will make low poly model and bake normalmap. Saint Lucia is 5700 tris plus shadowmesh so my will probably be something around that. I think I will use poly reducing script for that.

Did I mention show-piece versions of existing models for the upcoming LOD system... (see Tels for details)

Making even less detailed model is no problem.

I'm rendering last shot from another angle. I'll upload it later.

It's only a model...

That is more problematic because normalmap would be fitted only for one model. I don't think we want to make 2 normalmaps because those are heavy files. If we make normalmap for the higest resolution model it will not look as good with lower res. The really low-res model will be visible from large distances so it doesn't matter, it could even have no normalmap.

It's only a model...

These would be special case items so the extra normal map would be considered to be "worth it" but I suppose that this brings up the contentious idea of what is.. "worth it" and how many to include in TDM... I believe that this verges on the same contentious idea of having an external prefab repository or external texture repository so that Mappers would still have access to these items but they would have to include them in the PK4's...

I've finished the sculpture of Aphrodite:

Vile, godless pornography in our mod! Why I...

Now that's just wrong.

Soo... How many tris should the low poly model have for the LOD system?

I think roughly halving the tris for each stage might be ok, until you are down to maybe a few hundred?

How many does the current "in-game" version have? The shadow-casting model could also be reduced for each LOD stage.

Using more than 3 LOD stages is probably overkill, because I think this statue will only be used very sparingly, so it doesn't matter as much as if you have 1000 on the screen at the same time, where each saved tris is a god-send :)

Maybe you could produce a few automatically reduced versions so we can judge how that looks? Sorry, but I have not much experience with LOD yet :)

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
