Our textures being used in T2:

I am noticing more and more that our textures are being used in T2 FM's, what is our stance on this or is ok as long as creds are given and or permission asked...? And if T2 authors are using our resources then can I assume we would be ok to use theirs..? for exmple there a lot of models and textures in T2 that would look good in TDM..

As far as I'm concerned of course we're okay with it, it should even be encouraged. We've always been about goodwill for all FM building. Mappers should give credit for all custom resources they use of course, not just from TDM, and most mappers I recall have always been good about that. That's my take on it.

I'm not sure we should be using T2 objects and textures because of course they're copyrighted works, although we should be able to use custom objects and textures fans have *made* for T2 FMs, if they really look good (they're lower poly, lower res, missing the normalmaps, etc, but maybe some would still look good, I wouldn't automatically discount the possibility).

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

I was referring to the fan made models and objects that are of suitable quality for us in TDM

Yeah I thought about that and edited it in while you were posting. ;)

Yeah I'd think those are fair game, with credit of course. People make those for FMs, and we're in the FM Forum alongside T2 FMs, so I think it's like a kind of official sanction.

Some of my T2 objects are already in TDM. With updated materials of course. But I only grabbed a few that I thought fit well.

Most T2 objects are pretty low poly.

The main issue is that the (T2) conversion programs can mutilate an object pretty bad. So if you re-convert it for TDM the mesh can be pretty sloppy. Is always best to work from a source file.

There may be additional licensing issues, such as using textures from CGTextures (actually, some of the "TDM" textures in Thief missions may just be from the same source), but let them worry about it.

I would not use any models from Thief; the difference between polycount is so ginormous porting them may be more trouble than it's worth. Also, consider texture size: 256x256 is the max in Thief, but very small by TDM standards - our editor images are 256x256!

On the other hand, check out gecko's Thief Gold retexturing project. Wowzers. Most mods like these look sloppy, but this actually looks pretty great.

Damn, that got the same reaction out of me as that Deus Ex dx10 renderer + 2gb texture pack got. Pity it's not ETA until Q1 2013 :/

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
