Performance issues with 980 Ti

It's also visible when walking sideways, AFAIR it has something to do with weird tick rate set for the engine by id engine programmers, which doesn't go well with 60 Hz refresh rate. That is quite pronounced if you have Uncap FPS set to Off, so it's better to have it on.

 

Yup, so I have fps capped at 60 (matching my monitor) and calling it a day.

Apparently the expensive way to counter frame-pacing / micro stutter is a VRR monitor lol. OK.

After multiple test, I've settled on

 

- Soft shadow OFF

- 4X AA

- Everything maxed out

- Capped fps

 

Running the game at 60-62fps, perfectly fine.

You can always try Stencil+Soft, Maps+Soft is a bandwidth hogger.

Pathological CPU bound scene:

 

Mission: Rightful Property

 

Soft Stencil: 50FPS

Soft Shadow Maps: 80FPS

 

Pathological GPU bound scene:

 

Mission: No Honor Among Thieves (Mission 1 "politics" cave)

 

Soft Stencil: 58FPS

Soft Shadow Maps: 40FPS

 

Shadow Maps would probably almost always win if we didn't do "blocker searches" for PCSS.

 

Time to race them without soft shadows enabled and see if the stencil ever wins in that mode...
