Leaning would be very annoying if you couldn't move at the same time, to peak around corners, like me and spar said above.

I never moved while leaning, and I didn't find it annoying. With the default leaning keys in Thief (q & e), you can't really lean and strafe anyway, unless you do some weird finger dancing.

I think everyone agrees that running while leaning is ridiculous. If people want walking and stafeing, that's fine. I won't use it myself, but I don't think it's unbalancing or anything.

I agree we shouldn't bother with special animations for it, however.

Ish wrote - @DF: You really think that was what they intended, to allow lean and moving, but only if you start moving and then lean, not the other way around? Sounds more like something that slipped by, rather than an intended feature.

Yeah, I do think they intended it. However it's accomplished doesn't really matter so much. The bottom line is it's possible.

Does it take that long to un-lean and move over to the side a little bit more though?

No, but it's just the principle of it. Taking a system that is highly flexible and realistic to the player and chopping it down a few grades so it's not as flexible. That's like giving me the full 1-9 keypad to move with, where I can use the 1, 3, 7 and 9 keys for moving diagonally -- and then telling me I can't use 1, 3, 7 and 9 any more. If I want to move diagonal, I have to side-step then move forward; side-step, then move forward.

Running while leaning? Not really important to me. I could do without, as I think most people could. Walking or crouch-walking while leaning? Pretty important.

So it isn't possible to separate the leaning animation from the walking animation with "channels" or whatever it was that you talked about earlier? Maybe I understood it wrong but wouldn't that mean that we could easily do all combinations of walking/creeping/crouching + leaning?

That's the idea of having multiple channels of animation. Don't know why this would get so complicated.

It's pretty obvious that our leaning animation use the legs though. I think any decent leaning animation would have to.

Has anyone had any luck with textures from Polyhaven? Their OpenEXR normal maps seem too washed out and give incorrect shading in the engine.

I tried to upscale the TDM logo video. First try:

briefing_video.mp4 You can test it ingame by making a copy of the core tdm_gui.mtr and place it in your-tdm-root/materials/ , then edit line 249 of that file into the location where you placed the new briefing.mp4 file.
What I did was I extracted all the image files, then used Upscayl to upscale the images using General photo (Real-Esrgan) upscale setting and then turn it back into a video.
I might have to crop it a bit, the logo looks smaller on screen (or maybe it's actually better this way?). My video editor turned it into a 16:9 video, which I think overal looks better than 1:1 video of original.

Finally got round to publishing a tutorial on baking normal maps in Blender, since most of the ones we have are inaccessible or years out of date.
