  1. Because it's been called Thi4f in an attempt to render the mundane title all trendy and whatnot. Using numbers in titles has been done, and people do it in personalized registration plates too. In that numbers-letters translation, 3 = 'e' and 4= 'a'. So they borked the title and essentially called it Thiaf. It's emblematic of their attempts to bring it up to the present day market while just messing it up along the way. Thiaf is, as a result, a pretty apt name for it.
  2. I'm surprised this thread is still alive. Everything that can be speculated on has been, and everything that can be extrapolated from coverage has been, and has been discussed. Schrödinger's Sequel is good/bad until it's released!
  3. Oh my, it's an honor to meet Smooth McGroove's father.
  4. I've had this. I've just been turning cloning them, turning one to func_static and the other to worldspawn, then putting the latter just inside the former to seal the geometry. That way it doesn't matter if the worldspawn vanishes because afaik it still functions to seal out the void. There's no real tri cost since it isn't happening all over the place. It's a messy solution but it doesn't look any different when you're playing.
  5. Pfft, age gaps become irrelevant after you leave the education system. Granted you get more experience and feel like you're some sort of creep for wanting to socialise while older (I mean really, 99% of people who PM'd me have said "sorry I know I'm old I'll stop bothering you"!), but that's something that people stick on themselves as they grow up! I'm only 25 but I have very close friends older than 50, it ain't no thang.
  6. No, it isn't. Don't play it down because it's either expected or typical of a good, functioning family. It's not inherent human nature to care for people who are extremely ill, and it's too common for people to distance themselves from those suffering in order to ease loss out of pocket or heart. It's cold, and it only sounds unlikely because, no matter how cynical and pessimistic you want to appear, we like to think that it's how people will act in these kinds of situations. Chronic or terminal illnesses like these put huge strains on families, and it's a miracle if they pull through maturely and responsibly enough to act the right way. People with debilitating illnesses end up scared and alone if they don't already have people close to them, and children especially will never get to form those kinds of foundations because of the bystander effect. People deal with it in different ways, and somebody going to that kind of effort is admirable, regardless of whether or not it's to be expected and regardless of their relation to them.
  7. Well, a nihilist would never have bothered to make the comment since everything is meaningless... it takes devotion to be one! Still, even though I haven't been here long, this community is pretty great! I've always attributed it to the average age of the community but if TTLG is getting borked, it must just be something else! There was that one guy starting pissing contests every few months... at least now I know he's just after a confrontation. It does seem that publicity for TDM is growing, so there may be an exponentially growing number of jackasses in the future.
  8. I never actually read back and realised he's just trying to start pissing contests, I was just having a fun debate =P I've always called them tap-dancing shoes. If somebody can bunny-hop at the speed of sound in high heels, they should get an award of some sort. One of my favorite differences between TDM and Thief. Just in terms of map design, it always meant that anywhere posh was going to be next to impossible to get around without stutter-stepping. Now you can have fancy mansions and half the noise.
  9. I thought I was just missing some context...
  10. In promotion it's been referred to by the devs as Thi4f. As you know, using sequel numbers in titles is hip to the kids so they did that. The only problem is that 4 is an A, not an E, hence Thiaf. Also I've been referring to 'NuGarrett' as Garratt. Has a ring to it.
  11. Generalisation. You can't know if an audience will get what you are saying. If you assume they don't, you simplify it rather than speaking as floridly as you do. That was my point. Generalisation. As a would-be Pscyhology PhD, those on the sidelines are far more receptive to what's being said than those being targeted. The ones expected to respond will be thinking about what they can say to each point and generally focusing on their response. Those listening will hear and process everything a speaker has to say as all they're doing is listening, not pre-meditating a counter-point. People with a stake in it will also do something similar to the speaker in formulating an answer, but to a lesser degree. No need to be snarky. I wasn't trying to be subtle about anything, why do you expect something underhanded? It isn't Thief. Hyperbole. That's just adapting. If you're trying to brute-force you way through with a single playstyle and the game doesn't accommodate it, you change your playstyle. If that was possible in Thief, that's because of the unified dev team. Several people worked on their own missions but there are several constants in the level design. Fan-missions are made by people of all shapes and sizes, lacking a common mindset and working to their own preferences and playstyles. If they don't match your playstyle, it's because you and the creator aren't kindred spirits. This is speculation. The game's had trailers and gameplay demos for years. They were pushing stealth the very first time I saw it years ago, with a focus on very basic freedom to go about it as you like. Besides, this isn't about Thiaf. There are very, very few similarities between it and TDM as far as coverage has shown. Fallacious, given that you're trying to infer based on speculation. Because Squenix and Eidos are well-known for interrupting their own work-flow on behalf of forums. There's nothing to defend; it's simple as anything. Guard winds up to his right, you hold block and look to your left. To put it simply as I did, hold block and look at his sword. As far as I know, your argument here is that it's too difficult and detached from the Thief series? This wasn't in Thief, but it's certainly not difficult. It is. That's a very vague thing to say. Realism can be the floor tiles getting shinier if a leaking pipe drips on them, or it can be dying the first time a guard runs you through, rather than the fifth. What I said was that the head swiveling punishes you for being more brazen and impatient. Granted, it makes it more difficult to be brazen, but you're a self-proclaimed "Thief Expert Ghoster" so that's not an issue for you. It's strange. What you say renders you very compatible with the Dunning-Kruger effect, but your argument is that you're doing poorly in this. The high self-esteem, arrogance and need to outdo others should actually improve your game, but seems to have the opposite effect. You'd be better off accepting your perception of the features for what it is and either adapting to it or leaving it for dead, rather than arguing for your corner of the world. To generalise, this community isn't given to fan-boyism. It's mostly consisted of people old and mature enough to see flaws inherent in the engine and acknowledge them, then work towards working around and eventually fixing them. If all you're going to do is creatively complain it's too difficult for you, that's not going to change, and you're going to be saying the "same simple point over and over" until you give yourself Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
  12. Coincidence is that I did that a while ago, only using it like a guitar hero controller. I tried to get back into it again more recently but it's a slowly dying project; links to most fretted songs are all broken by now. I might kill some time with it tonight if I can find some songs to play, I remember there was one song of the three that came with it that I really liked.
  13. Bahh, Guitar Hero is just a bit of harmless fun! Maybe I'd be as contemptuous if they invented a Violin Hero.
  14. It looks very fancy! Reminds me of all the tiled mansions you'd get in Thief FMs. Voice acting is brilliant, on another note. It'd be hilarious to have someone walk in while you're just chilling in the shower.
  15. They're there to comment out the tags. I did say to remove them. Period, full-stop, tomayto tomahto.
  16. Drive off... horses? Any chance of seeing that in action before release? My mind is racing =P
  17. [.spoiler] Immediately before your text and [./spoiler] after it (minus the full-stops) would become I said it while beta testing but I'll say it again: the mantling in this game is really forgiving. If you just pay attention to making sure you press jump as late as you can, you'll make it provided you're looking where you want to go. You don't need to rush on most of them either, which is where some may mess up by panicking.
  18. Why thank you! I'm not going to show any more progress videos from now as it'll just start spoiling things. I'm hoping for about an hour's play-time for the regular playstyles, so about ten times larger than it is now. Expect to hear about it again in a few months!
  19. Let's not forget that Stephen Russell was Xerxes. Guy's got range.
  20. Man, a grunge song hasn't kept me listening all the way through for years =P ** Whoops...
