I have been pondering what "Mutually Assured Destruction" means in an age when we might possibly be a nuclear target from a small nation or terrorist group. Are we still set to auto-launch nukes at Russia and China as soon as we get hit? Are we still "playing chicken" with the apocalypse?

If it were a terrorist group, if any state, we would hit Iran for sponsoring them. Other than that, it's just regional "assured destruction" scenarios (India-Pakistan; N.Korea-Japan), and even then I don't think it'd be "mutual" since one can overpower the other. Rogue nukes are awful things though, yeah, we're in a frightful new era different from the Cold War spiel where at least everybody was "rational" or strategic about it. Terrorists don't hav...
