  1. Indeed to clarify, I would think for a beauty contest, framerate should be kept reasonable enough to allow the majority of players to move around and enjoy the aesthetics. Obviously 2 FPS is not enjoyable, so that would likely hurt that entry's scores. Some will be unhappy with 15FPS, others will be fine with it. That said, framerate, IMO, should be of secondary concern. It's a beauty contest, not a performance contest. It'd be a fuzzy line of course, but voting would decide the overall most pleasing experience.
  2. I lean toward the "should be playable" side. And by playable, I only mean the very loose criteria of you should be able to move around in it. I wouldn't want to stand still and look at a simple picture, but walk around in the picture? Oh yes.
  3. Seems I was wrong to question the release of tools above. Bam! http://www.frictionalgames.com/site/node/112 I don't plan to jump into this yet (still have the trilogy in front of me) but here's hoping by the time I do there are plenty of Amnesia FMs.
  4. Not at all? Is that the result of driver limitations, or lacking hardware?
  5. And how great it would be to have them (and more hopefully) duke it out to prove it! <taunt taunt taunt>
  6. I like the idea of a beauty contest for a few reasons: * beauty! it's fun to look at, duh (I think Requiem for a Thief has a permanent place burned into my memory) * reveals what can be done with TDM (particularly beneficial early in release) * challenges mappers to come up with clever tricks and techniques for said goal * new assets! * maybe it'll even lure some DromEd vets to jump in? The question, IMO: * at this point in time, can the community adequately meet the challenge? (that's sure to ruffle a few feathers, but depending on how high the bar is set, it is a legit question (also doesn't hurt to taunt ego a bit ) -- e.g., is the model set, texture set, etc., enough to get the job done? Is the community expertise with patches etc., mature enough? Might just need a yearly beauty contest...) Then again I also hope for Halloween and Xmas contests.
  7. EAX in TDM maps by the method in the demo map above is fully working from what I have been able to determine.
  8. ! Same here! Wow, small world. I was taken on by Glen/Legend for 2 months trying to help them with design of the 'Four Kings' map for the game. After some time I think he decided he couldn't keep so much of his team remote, so he cut a lot of us. Indeed, man. In-frigging-deed. *shiver*
  9. That sounds a bit bad. If someone is going to prefab/model something, especially after building it, they probably weren't thinking in advance not to use their normal building technique (which likely includes cloning), and therefore will have problems. Can't imagine why it would happen anyway. @rich: any ideas, can it be fixed?
  10. Well I guess there probably won't be another one. It sounds like it's being pirated like crazy. http://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/board.pl?action=viewthread&boardid=1&threadid=114332 With that, I wonder if the editor will even come. Fuck's sake, people. If you want good games from good indies especially, pay them.
  11. Not sure why such masters hesitate to step up and create such an impact with a more capable and flexible engine. Is it a matter of "good enough?" Doubtful that, but then why not? Any of a number of big names in the Thief FMing community seem poised and waiting, but why the wait? (For the case of Gaetane, we know the reason as stated by her -- she wants to finish Black Frog before diving in.)
  12. Why the complexity of the groove though? I would think that'd just make it more tricky to line up. Unless that's intended to disguise a seam? Ultimately I'd probably end up trying to hide the fade between two soft edged ambients.
  13. If it's an internal thread (behind the scenes area for team members) a public forum member wouldn't be able to see it. Not sure about the bugtracker issue you're having.

    Drivel

Staying on topic != censorship. Let's try to stay on topic.
  15. I would stipulate two things on that: 1. Different expectations for unreal. Unreal is... well, unreal. Thief I like to be realistic. Somehow, even T1 and T2 look more believable to my eye (probably because the mind's eye fills in the blanks and details) than does TDS. 2. And fantasy-like or not, this is simply better. I think that's undeniable. I'd rate TDS' art direction in every way save a few excellent textures to be very poor. Most textures are poor (till JohnP did his best to fix them while preserving them), models look out of place and slapped into the world, the world is boxy, and the characters... oh man. I cringe to this day. I've always liked fantasy, but TDS does a lousy job at it. Edit: One fosters a fantasy-based suspension of disbelief, while the other just looks bad.
  16. It's just a link to some discussion on such problems. The first post contains a link to another posting of same which contains a post which mentions the problem with holding them too, and a possible solution that's been considered in the past (making held objects cast no shadows). I don't have a link for that thread. No perfect solution has been found at this time though.
  17. It appears you are correct. This used to work, IIRC.
  18. That sounds like it'd be fixed with blaming (who did what) which exists afaik, so it should be doable.
  19. Some gorgeous shots (especially the very first one of the series), yum. Some of those might make for fun challenges to repro in TDM, while I'm busy being stuck in mapper's-block land. :-/ Building is fun. Design sucks!
  20. Damn, no I haven't gotten to move on yet, too busy with stuff recently. Must not open spoiler clickies...
  21. Those cats have good taste. What's the site? lolcats? icanhascheezburger? catsthatlooklikehitler? mycathatesyou? That's the ones I can think of.
  22. I'd argue against that. The guy carries on like a troll (and an uninformed one at that) and gets what he has coming. Sometimes a little bit of not-neighborly bluntness oDDity-style is just right, especially for someone who chooses to carry on in a hostile manner to start. He stays here solely to drop provoking unsubstantiated one-liner complaints. Frankly, people should stop feeding this troll.
  23. *cough* @ solarsplace: http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/11708-advice-about-recruiting-for-a-mod-please/page__view__findpost__p__231320 Edit: Actually it does appear to be just good use of ambient sources. Please correct me if I'm wrong. There would need to be linking between the torches and the ambient for extinguishing, which will work for a single target, but with multiple torches it'll require some extra help. I'm in the process of asking Tels about support for this right now.
