Qarl's Texture Pack

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this is the right forum to put this in, but has anyone yet considered the possibility of using Qarl's Texture Pack (originally designed for TES4: Oblivion) in TDM? I'm not sure if they are directly compatible, but if they're useable (and if we have Qarl's permission), we could potentially have hundreds of high quality textures at our disposal. I mean, I think we can agree that most of the Oblivion textures would look right at home in TDM.

Take a look:

I don't know much about textures though, so could be talking out of my arse. Feel free to shoot me down in smoke and flames if necessary. ph34r.gif

Looking at the sample images, they look rather "fantasyish", and, although that may be the light, sort of "washed out" and too bright. I am not sure this would be such a good idea, but again, initial impression and personal opinion.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

It's hard to tell, but the textures themselves don't look very high res to me. It looks like there is some kind of parallax effect or something on them, however. Hard to tell from those kind of screenshots though...it could have more to do with the ambient light than the textures. (now the models, on the other hand...)

As always, it can't hurt to ask.

I guess it's rather hard to judge from the screenshots, as there's HDR in Oblivion, which induces the overbright effect that makes it look so "fantasyish" as Melan puts it. I used that package too when I played Oblivion together with all other available graphic tweaks and I can tell you, those textures aren't lowres... ;) Only one of the screenshots posted does show the before/after comparison. All others apparently are just "before"-images. Parallax-mapping is used occasionally, but the normalmaps are still available for every texture, so that doesn't pose a problem.

I'm with STiFU. These are definitely hi-res textures, and they are VERY well made. Here's a good image to look at to give you a flavour:

I also agree that Oblivion does have a weird overbrightness and softness to the textures as a result of HDR/Bloom, but even if there is a problem with the textures looking a bit too washed out for TDM, I'd be happy to go through the textures with GIMP and tone down the brightness. That is, as long as it's the relatively simple task I think it is. tongue.gif

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
