darkradiant wants jack audio daemon running... why?

DarkRadiant does not open (hangs with splash screen open)... when run in a terminal I get:

darkradiant

Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory

Cannot connect to server socket

jack server is not running or cannot be started

Why should it be using jackd??

Can I start it with no audio... or at least without a dependency of jack?

If I start jack with qjackctl, I can only successfully start a 'dummy' jackd service... and no matter if I choose memory locking or not, I get this when running darkradiant:

darkradiant

Cannot lock down memory area (Cannot allocate memory)

You can either try to compile without sound options or remove the sound.so from the modules folder so that DarkRadiant doesn't load it.

I'll remove the sound.so and recompile... I didn't find any readme or wiki which showed options to leave out the sound when compiling.

Thanks :)

Unfortunate you couldn't get it running with the sound. You won't be able to preview the sounds in-editor now.

Yeah, I know... I have no idea why it requires me to be running jackd :(

I also cannot find the sound.so, or a modules directory for that matter... if I remove /plugins/sound, then I get configuration errors:(

Nevermind, I found it.

I can now run darkradiant (with no sound). But I would prefer to get it working with sound, but not rely on that damned jackd service.

My system uses pulseaudio with alsa.

Has anyone had any luck with textures from Polyhaven? Their OpenEXR normal maps seem too washed out and give incorrect shading in the engine.

I tried to upscale the TDM logo video. First try:

briefing_video.mp4 You can test it ingame by making a copy of the core tdm_gui.mtr and place it in your-tdm-root/materials/ , then edit line 249 of that file into the location where you placed the new briefing.mp4 file.
What I did was I extracted all the image files, then used Upscayl to upscale the images using General photo (Real-Esrgan) upscale setting and then turn it back into a video.
I might have to crop it a bit, the logo looks smaller on screen (or maybe it's actually better this way?). My video editor turned it into a 16:9 video, which I think overal looks better than 1:1 video of original.

Trying to be productive on my down-time before Capcom releases Akuma and my son is constantly on my PC playing Street Fighter...

Finally got round to publishing a tutorial on baking normal maps in Blender, since most of the ones we have are inaccessible or years out of date.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.
