Wet texture need sound

I made a large very shallow puddle but can't get it to sound like a wet footstep - it's just normal stone. Added water to the texture but makes no difference. I'm not bothered about a visible splash just the sound. Any ideas?

Perhaps ask Sotha as well - he has loads of puddles in The Transaction in the street which make a splashing sound.

"No proposition Euclid wrote,

No formulae the text-books know,

Will turn the bullet from your coat,

Or ward the tulwar's downward blow

Strike hard who cares—shoot straight who can—

The odds are on the cheaper man."

Your puddle should be an atdm:liquid_water entity. (and make sure that your puddle's bottom surface reaches below the world geometry.)

Otherwise, the foolproof way is you could just lay down some decal patches of "textures/common/tdm_nodrawsolid_liquid" or "tdm_nodrawsolid_mud"

EDIT: or tdm_nodrawsolid_puddle? I think puddle is the "pitter-patter", and liquid is the "SPLASH SLOSH".

Well surftype worked although I used "puddle" instead of "mud" but in the end I had to use the nodraw method because the layout of puddle meant the splosh noise extended a little too far. Nodraw gave me complete control where it would sound. :) This puddle now has four patches on top of each other! nodraw, dark-wet-snow-melt, snow-melt-edge, and obscured dark mirror. Crazy.

This particular puddle is too custom for general use.

It started out as my attempt to soften the edge where snow ends where rural area meets town. My 'crumb' method as used with some dirts and grass was not great on its own with snow but by overlaying it with a colorme grime and underlaying that with a dark mirror it is much improved. Apart from the shape of this one I think it would be very rare for any map to need this snow > puddle set up compared to say a normal rain puddle. And I had to put my darkening on top so it also darkened the snow edge to make it look like slush.

One problem is that I think only one mirror texture is allowed per leaf so normally that fake sky mirror would be better. I couldn't use it here because this map is a foggy one so no sky to reflect. I was lucky that this is the only place in this map where it is needed (I think.)

I think some generic puddles might be made with the dark grime surround first then the fake mirror on top. Actually it probably would be better with a new doughnut shaped circular grime that fades at the edges but also fades to a hole in the middle and lay this over the mirror. That would get rid of the hard straight edges we had in say St. Lucia. But then this grime becomes dominant for the splash sound so it needs a further nodraw solid over the mirror part.

I'd like to make a few prefabs but as ever, time is the enemy. We'll see.

Has anyone had any luck with textures from Polyhaven? Their OpenEXR normal maps seem too washed out and give incorrect shading in the engine.

I tried to upscale the TDM logo video. First try:

briefing_video.mp4 You can test it ingame by making a copy of the core tdm_gui.mtr and place it in your-tdm-root/materials/ , then edit line 249 of that file into the location where you placed the new briefing.mp4 file.
What I did was I extracted all the image files, then used Upscayl to upscale the images using General photo (Real-Esrgan) upscale setting and then turn it back into a video.
I might have to crop it a bit, the logo looks smaller on screen (or maybe it's actually better this way?). My video editor turned it into a 16:9 video, which I think overal looks better than 1:1 video of original.

Finally got round to publishing a tutorial on baking normal maps in Blender, since most of the ones we have are inaccessible or years out of date.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.
