Speaking of Skyrim, skin surface scattering

Look at this)

Methinks TDM capable of models no worse than that in terms of leather details, hard metal surfaces and such

But how to simulate skin scattering? TDM man-skin looks like piece of painted wood. Is there a may to to implement or simlulate SSS, like self-illuminate a bit?

Edit: checked Wiki, its called SUBsurface scattering, my bad

What excuse do we have not to sculpt, and sculpt, and sculpt, until the job is done?

Sikkpin made a SSS shader for his Doom 3 branch but it seems we have limited staff who could incorporate such work.

actual code:

https://github.com/Sikkpin/Feedback/blob/master/shaders/glprogs/skin.vfp

If anyone can answer that, Serpentine would be the go-to guy. Try him over at the dark mod IRC (webchat.freenode.net #thedarkmod )

That said, Rich_is_Bored's "Real Translucency" trick might get you pretty close if you blur the inverse vertex painting.

That real transluceny thing is great for thin curtain! Like thete is a window, and its curtained and there is some character and light lamp behind - to the effect of a silhuette visible from the street.Cool!

It could work for light shining behind an earlobe as well... you would need to create a scripted light inside the AI that fade's in as a reaction

to the AI getting hit by the light. this would then cause the inverse side image to render

Rich's translucency method doesn't work for .md5mesh models.

Sikkpin's stuff looks interesting, but I don't have the time or know-how to look into it.

Shoot. md5mesh doesn't support vertex color or twosided?

If it wouldn't cause too much hassle, I could just ask Sikkpin... Not sure he'd want to do it though (he seems burned out these days too...)

Am I the only one that finds it a little funny we can so easily talk about the skin shaders for soft CG-pr0n? ^_^

Well there's you're first sign we're techno-geeks...

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Has anyone had any luck with textures from Polyhaven? Their OpenEXR normal maps seem too washed out and give incorrect shading in the engine.

I tried to upscale the TDM logo video. First try:

briefing_video.mp4 You can test it ingame by making a copy of the core tdm_gui.mtr and place it in your-tdm-root/materials/ , then edit line 249 of that file into the location where you placed the new briefing.mp4 file.
What I did was I extracted all the image files, then used Upscayl to upscale the images using General photo (Real-Esrgan) upscale setting and then turn it back into a video.
I might have to crop it a bit, the logo looks smaller on screen (or maybe it's actually better this way?). My video editor turned it into a 16:9 video, which I think overal looks better than 1:1 video of original.

Trying to be productive on my down-time before Capcom releases Akuma and my son is constantly on my PC playing Street Fighter...

Finally got round to publishing a tutorial on baking normal maps in Blender, since most of the ones we have are inaccessible or years out of date.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.
