Wtf? Entities become bound to different door.

Ok, here's a new one.

I've got a set of doors I've made that have func_static dirt decals attached. There are two doors on the same side of hallway, about 600 units away from each other.

On at least 3 occasions now, possibly more, the dirt decals bound to one door have mysteriously become bound to the other door instead. I haven't touched the doors recently, and just noticed again that the dirt decals of the far door have become bound to the closest door (which I even game a specific name so I could keep track of this, so it's not like the difference is a single number).

Has anyone ever seen this before? Things just becoming bound to something different randomly??

edit: is there anything that might make func_statics on the same plane become connected somehow? It might be that the dirt decals on both doors are becoming a single entity somehow, so can be bound to only one door.

But it is very easy to accidentally combine them yourself. I've done this many times before.

You shift-click then make it a func_static, not realizing you had another previously selected, voilà, both are now part of the same entity.

That's not what's happening here. The first couple times I thought I may have done that, but then I specifically started watching for it, and even gave everything unique names to make it easy to track.

You could test the plane theory by twisting one of the doors a few degrees and see if the problem still happens maybe.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

What does the effect look like? The mental image I have is decals sitting normally on doors A and B when the doors are closed, but then when you open door A, the decals on for B move in parallel with it even though door B remains closed. Is that it? Not that I have any theories.

Yes. Sometimes the decals from door A become bound to door B, and they then swing in an arc when door B is opened (and stay in place when door A is opened, which is usually how I notice this has happened).

I've tried something new this time, and bound the decals from door A to the door A, and the decals from doorB to the handle of door B. I'll see if that helps.

1. Won't that make the decals from doorB rotate when the handle of doorB rotates? Assuming it rotates.

2. Maybe there's something left over in the *.map file that DR isn't showing you. Examine the map in a text editor and see if anything looks odd or out of place.

It doesn't. These are new prefab doors I've made with different handle pieces.

Are the decals being copied from door to door and just slide into position?

Or were the doors with decals saved as prefabs, so loaded with the decals already in place?

Pretty sure it was the latter, though it's been a long time now. None of the other similar doors seem to be having problems, which is what made me wonder if it's something to do with being on exactly the same plane.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
