  1. Doom 3 was the last game I paid over $19 for that I didn't regret afterward.
  2. Also, feel free to laugh, but I put an ancient SB Live card in this new PC. I did it so I could have 3D sound in Dark Engine games under XP. If I do install Windows 7, I will lose that functionality unless I buy a new sound card... ugh
  3. Right, so I recently put together a new machine and I didn't buy Windows with it. The only modern game I care to play at this point is TDM, so I didn't see a need to buy it and I just installed Debian and XP. Now i've got some extra cash and I was considering buying the Windows 7 family pack upgrade for $105. It is clear that you can do a clean install over XP, but there are of course conflicting stories about doing the same over Windows 2000. I do have a boxed copy of Windows 2000 here and if I was allowed to use one of the Win7 upgrades on a 2000 machine, it would make it worth the price. Now of course this information isn't clearly and officially spelled out anywhere. Places like this make it sound as though 2000 can be used with the upgrade, but a fresh install is required, just like with XP. I then read on another forum that MS changed their minds on this later and 2000 can NOT be used with an upgrade disk to 7. Sure enough, this page says nothing about it at all. Am I allowed to do this? Why the ____ does this have to be so artificially complicated? Whatever happened to trying to offer the best product you can at a competitive price?
  4. I just completed it for the first time. The mission has very nice visuals (professional quality). The audio was excellent as well. I would say it is even better than TDS because the environmental sounds are directional. When I'm roaming around the streets and I hear a horse galloping in the distance, I turn and the sound fades to the appropriate direction because it isn't just baked into a background music track. That draws the player in to the world much more. Bottom Line: This is another mission that should be advertised on TTLG. Just show them some screenshots of the town... How could anyone *not* want to play it? Thanks!
  5. I've started getting crashes in TDM 1.06 after I install a new FM... or at least I think it crashes. TDM just closes and does not restart. --Debian Squeeze 32-bit with NVidia drivers and 8 GB of RAM. I have to restart it manually, which isn't really a big deal.
  6. Also, what kind of CPU? 2.4 GHz could either be a pretty good chip (I7/I5/C2D/A64) or a pretty lousy one (old P4 from 2002). Sadly, if it is a P4, DDR1 is ridiculously overpriced these days...
  7. I actually bought this game a wile ago, but still haven't played it. I was absolutely obsessed with TFC back in 2000, playing it for hours every day. Most of my game time now though is spent with TDM or Urban Terror. The things I've read about TF2 have been major turn-offs, like the removal of hand grenades. Part of the joy in TFC was having a perfectly primed grenade and then handing it to an enemy sniper or spy, only to see him reduced to chunks. Conc-jumping was an art in it's self. The whole going invisible thing as the spy in TF2 does intrigue me though. I also loved terrorizing the enemy in TFC as a medic, poisoning them and laughing my ass off when they spread the infection to eachother. Apparently you can't do that in TF2 either.
  8. Do let us know if you hear any music as epic and awesome as this song "Mellow Chello" from the PS version of DN3D. This is actually a remix being made by the guy who originally made the tune. I can't decide which version I love more, but both are on my MP3 player. I used to just sit on that level and listen to that song over again.
  9. I had some extra cash to spend, but I couldn't justify buying this. It was already going for $30 on Amazon. I will one day play it though, probably when it hits $9.99 or $4.99. Till then, there's Shadow Warrior..... That game always cracked me up, especially stuff like the dinghy part. It was funnier than Duke IMO.
  10. MS disabled it so you would have to pay $90 to "upgrade" to a Home Premium OS and obtain functionality that was previously being sold on XP netbooks. I wish I could say I saw that trick coming, but I just broke down and purchased an XP model before the W7 ones ever arrived. Also note that I'm not a Linux fanatic or anything. I wish I could have used GNOME on my netbook, but the experience makes me long for my Pentium 120 with Windows 95. The simple answer is Linux failed to deliver on the netbook.
  11. I've been exploring and enjoying this mission, but I haven't finished it so far. One warning I would like to throw out there to any players is this, which is a slight spoiler. Do NOT stash any unconscious bodies behind the booth where the man-hole cover is. I figured that was a safe place because it was dark, but let's just say that area needs to open later, and it can't with a body on it. I had to noclip to continue.
  12. Those EEE-PCs also have damn good sound if you plug in headphones. The internal speakers aren't so hot, but the amplifier provides a clear sound with plenty of bass and no clipping. It can even do EAX! I'm still kicking myself for getting one with GMA 945 instead of NVidia though. Oh well, at least I didn't fall for the joke that is 7 Starter Edition where you have to pay to change your wallpaper! Only the corporate world could build an OS that requires half a gig of memory but lacks features that have been around for almost twenty years. http://www.withinwindows.com/2009/03/28/surprise-you-cant-change-your-wallpaper-in-windows-7-starter-edition/
  13. Linux users, see here: http://www.rpgameplace.de/blog/index.php?/archives/25-Virtual-Surround-for-stereo-headphones-with-ALSA.html
  14. Well I haven't finished this one yet, but I can tell you now that it gets very high marks for visual and audio quality from me. There is tuns of detail everywhere and it doesn't just feel like simple brushes slapped together.
  15. Thanks! Cool mission. I just completed it for the first time. My experience follows. Two things are for sure, this has been a great contest and Garrett would hate my apartment!
  16. Sweet! Just completed one mission, here's another to check out now, and another is on the way!
  17. Might we see a mission or two released today? I hope so! It is Saturday, so we would have plenty of time to play.
  18. I noticed that many games on Linux which use OpenAL do this. Sadly, the Doom 3 Linux version doesn't support OpenAL (wth?).
  19. I put together a P4 3 GHz system today from spare parts. The thing runs just fine, but the BIOS says the CPU is idling at between 60 and 70 C! How can this possibly be true? I shut the thing off and let it rest for TWENTY minutes, and it still started at 60 when I turned it on and checked BIOS. I unhooked it and put my hand on the CPU heat sink after running it and it was not too hot. If it is truly running at such a high temp, shouldn't I get burned, or shouldn't I at least not be able to hold my hand there? I felt as close to the CPU on the heat sink as I could and it still was not uncomfortable. I used some cheap thermal compound from Radio Shack and the stock cooler that matches the motherboard. The CPU fan spins at about 2500 RPM. I'm going to let this thing cool for about an hour or so and if it starts at 60 C again I'm just going to ignore it. The machine runs with no stability problems. Any other ideas?
  20. Some tracks I've been listening to over and over recently... http://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=155604 I've never liked RPG games, but they have some of the best music. This track sounds like the best stuff you would hear in an RPG... especially at 3:30+. http://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=151449 (I love the melody and especially drums in this track) http://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=158682 (another catchy tune that I've had on repeat)
  21. Have you tried Urban Terror? The game is a cross between Quake and Counter-Strike, combining the best aspects from both with a little more realism added on top. It is great fun till all hours of the night. All of the levels have at least two paths to take, many have more than that. That means there's always a way to get rid of pesky campers. I only hate one map in this game. The rest are always fun to play.
  22. Well we went ahead with the trade. Now he has one less extra monitor just sitting around, and he can have an MP3 player in his car; and I have a good spare monitor in case mine fails and one less MP3 player sitting around. I'm also pretty sure his 800 watt amp and 15-inch speakers in the car will provide for more than enough bass. EDIT: Bahhhh: double post.. oops
  23. I'm planning to look at the monitor further and check for stuck pixels, etc. I know these things aren't built like tanks (like CRTs were). They can have stuck pixels, dead pixels, etc. Also, here's the same model Ipod that I have for $50 used on Amazon. <a href='http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0002OZXHO/ref=dp_olp_0?ie=UTF8&redirect=true&qid=1306934767&sr=8-10&condition=all' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='nofollow'>http://www.amazon.co...0&condition=all</a> Edit: Ah, okay that one "does not work". For a used one that actually works, it starts at 75 bucks.
  24. I have this friend who is offering to sell the monitor for $50. I have that old Ipod in my desk and he might be willing to make the trade. Is it worth it? This Ipod holds twenty gigs and includes a nice case. I never was happy with it though because of the cringe-worthy bass and pathetic battery life. I upgraded to a Cowon D2 years ago and I love the insane battery life, thumping bass and 32 GB of solid state space. Do you think this is a reasonable trade? I know some people are Apple fanatics and they think this stuff could be worth a lot, but I just don't see how. It has a crappy gray-scale screen that made my eyes bleed while trying to play Doom on it... lol Granted, it was never meant to play Doom in the first place. Thoughts?
